Don’t be put off by the bumpy road to the property. It’s a lovely riverside (creekside ) location. It was quiet, and we were provided with water, sewer hookup and 30 amp electric. We had some questions and they were answered promptly.
Great place for star gazing. We heard owls at night and lots of birdlife during the day. Possibly coyotes or foxes at night down by the creek. 😊.
We spent a few hours at the nearby Mineral Springs Fossil Park and found some great fossils! Worth the trip.
We are traveling from Maine to California and this campsite was a nice spot to relax for a few days. It’s rural but worth the effort to get there.

Cool place to visit and loved the history. We would love to see some of the old cabins from the 20’s restored. Place needs a little TLC but still super fun to visit and Phillip was extremely nice as well as Johnny.
Will be back in the Spring.

My wife and I, along with a friend and two dogs stayed here for 4 nights and absolutely loved it! We stayed in a class b camper at the site closest to one of the cabins. Full electric hookups, fresh water, and black/gray water dump area. Johnnie was very pleasant to communicate with and he was also quick to respond to messages. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway with beautiful views and lots of exploring I would definitely recommend this place!

I enjoyed this campsite! Directly on top of a ridge where if you walk down the ridge and a few steps to the right you are on the old zoo trail.
Some things I learned:
No service for me (Verizon user) unless I was on the dam (which I enjoyed being away from)
The guy who watches the camp is very helpful and kind and his dogs a gentle giant. Loved Thor and so did my small dog.
The site is more rock than dirt so I couldn’t stake my tent in the ground and it did get pretty windy on the ridge one night for us (be strategic with car parking + trees around you and put rocks in my tent to help.
There are toilets at the zoo trailhead so if you don’t mind walking a little you can use a toilet while tent camping.
1-2 nights max is what I’d recommend! The zoo trail is smaller so that + some paddle boarding on the lake maxed my time out. Any more nights and I’d be spending time outside the site/trail.

Great Spot at historic setting! Johnie is a Super Host! Had privacy and Phillip was close by if needed. Definitely will return next time passing through this way! Hint: use google maps not Apple for directions 🙂

It was isolated enough to have that “ wilderness vibe “, but all the while knowing your just minutes from town. That’s old zoo down the way just tops it off. Our trip was cut short due to a medical emergency ( unrelated to the campsite lol)but we will definitely be back when we can enjoy our stay longer.

2 nights at Country Woods Inn
The Santa Fe car is at the edge of a meadow and some woods, with a cluster of other accommodations ranging from campsites, airstreams and a cabin where a hostess cat lives who greets all the guests. She came knocking on our door and stayed with us, to our delight, throughout our stay. And there is no extra charge for vacation kitty!
The train car is cleverly outfitted with all the comforts and everything you need for them: cooking pots and utensils, dinnerware, wine glasses and corkscrew. The hot water is steaming. The small refrigerator was plenty big enough for us and has a freezer shelf with two mini cube ice trays, but for larger groups consider bringing in some ice with you.
The bunk beds are as steady as trees and so roomy under the canopy that only the very tall might have to bend to clear it. For us, it was like a small room. The mattresses are both soft and supportive. A town vendor said the car had been outfitted and adorned for the owner’s grandchildren, and we certainly benefitted from the thoughtfulness, playfulness and considerations that have been lovingly put into it. A small jar is offered for collecting fireflies darting outside. We gladly unplugged with no WiFi or tv signal there, when there were so many books, games and dvds for entertainment. Instead though we opted for star watching, deer spotting, and loving on the petting animals at the main hub. We plan to return often for the rest and rejuvenation we found easily in the woods by the river

We had the best time at this campground. We arrived before dark- wise choice. Phillip greeted us and showed us our site. What a unique experience camping next to a zoo abandoned in the 30's just 100' away with a trail to Cisco Lake. The limestone outbuildings are impressive. There are trees but we had no problem navigating our 35' TT. This is an authentic experience with an old Texas hill country feel. We wish we had more time to stay and explore the area.

What a nice setting in the woods with walking trails through the old zoo caves, the large pool, and the old park. Pleasantly surprised. Plenty of room for two travel trailers 35’ long. Always a pleasure to come upon a unique out of the way Hipcamp. Many thanks to Johnie and all.

We loved the quiet secluded area. We were the only ones there last weekend and it was like having our own little oasis. Very close walk to the lake and the zoo both. The hiking and trails leave straight from the campground. We will go back. Very friendly staff and very easy to work with.

Perfect place for privacy and adventure. Cisco lake is within walking distance of your site. There are only two rv sites. How great is that? Johnnie is a wonder host with a lot of knowledge about this area. There is 30-50 amp with water and sewage. You will need a longer hose for the sewage. The old zoo and trails are really fun taking you back in history. When we arrived, Philip another host was there to greet us and show us around if needed. This area is very secluded and woodsy. We love it so much. We are definitely going to try a once a year trip here. I’m not sure what the guy who wrote the review was talking about when he was saying something about buying meth. There was nothing of that nonsense anywhere. We highly suggest if you like privacy and adventure and a nice family town book this place now. They will have a spot for you. I was surprised by how remote this location felt but it was perfect for a one night stop over while driving across Texas. I was the only camper at the time so it was very peaceful. The location was beautiful as the sun set and fun to explore the next morning.

I had a wonderful time RV camping on Sunshine's land and found it hard to leave the peace and beauty of her place. If I could I would give her 6 stars for being so gracious, responsive, and generously accommodating. For example, she allowed me to settle in the most scenic campsite next to the creek while I had reserved a less scenic one closer to the road. She gave me great river intel and additional time to enjoy kayaking on the Brazos. The campground and restroom are clean and well maintained. The experience was exceptional! The location is superb given you are out in the country yet close to the town of Mineral Wells (8 miles) and the Lake Mineral Wells State Park, both of which I enjoyed visiting! However, It is the peace of the place I relished most. Thank you again, Sunshine!
