In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. 1 night at Gypsy Moon Hideaway

Had a wonderful last minute visit camping with my two dogs and cat. The location was easy to get to and on site directions were straightforward and accurate. Conveniently located about 30mins outside of Weatherford. Hosts were friendly and helpful. All the primitive sites were labeled and each has a picnic table and fire ring. Sites are spaced out similar to what you would see at a state park. We stayed at “the point” right on the river bank. It was beautiful and had access to the water. I saw another review about neighbors lights and dogs bark; I am going to assume they stayed in the same site as us because it’s the farthest back on Gypsy moon also making it the closest to the neighboring rv park. I did notice the lights but you could easily reposition to avoid them and the dogs barked when we first got there and were setting up but then settled. Neither bothered us nor are these things in control of the hosts. Shower and bathroom in good working condition. Lots of chickens, geese and goats out near the rvs but none wandered over to primitive camping. Didn’t go in or inquire about bait shop so nothing to review but did see firewood for sale. Overall very good value for the price and I will gladly return if I’m in the area again.

Camp site #7 was a pretty big camp site. Plenty of space between every campsite. The view on the patio at the winery was amazing during sunset. Food and wine was great too

A great place to cold weather camp. Well taken care of, quiet, and beautiful. Lots of wildlife, nice walks, everything you need is there. The send off I got from the coyotes on my last morning was just amazing and peaceful. Don’t go here, you’ll hate it. 😂

We loved tent camping on Amy's land! Everyone very kind and the area is beautiful and relaxing we had a wonderful time fishing and just being outdoors in nature. It reminded me of childhood spent on my grandparents farm. With all the goats, chickens and ducks etc.

Amy's place is always a welcome reprieve from the world. Situated on a nice piece of property along the river, it is a very chill vibe. If you are tent camping, I recommend the Far Far Away site. This is my second time here, and it's apparent that continued improvements have been made. She did have to shut down the honor system store because.... well, people suck. And I hate that for Amy, because she is such a sweet lady. But I understand the decision. If you come here, please be kind, respectful, and pick up any trash you see from previous campers.

Absolutely amazing!!! I can’t wait to come back. Melissa was the best house and the property was even better than I expected. I was so comfortable, secure and felt like I was totally isolated. At the same time, I knew help or something I needed was just a text away. The fire pit made cooking a breeze, and I spent so much time in the sauna. The bathtub was amazing and fully stocked!

This was our third time camping at 4R, and it’s honestly becoming one of our favorite traditions. The campgrounds are always clean, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. My kids love exploring the area — hiking the trails, walking the hills, and finding new little spots each time we come. Evenings are our favorite part. Sitting around the campfire, making s’mores, and playing games in the tent once the sun goes down always ends up being the highlight of the trip. It’s such a great mix of quiet, nature, and time together without distractions. Every visit has been consistently great, and this one was no different. If you’re looking for an easy, kid-friendly camping spot with gorgeous views, space to explore, and a warm, relaxing atmosphere, 4R Ranch is hard to beat. We’ll definitely be back.
