In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

Rock-N A Ranch is roughly 20 minutes away and offers horseback riding. The Cabins and Campsites are within walking distance from each other but far enough away to create that illusion of privacy. We do have a neighborhood close by but you can’t see or hear them due to the woods. In my travels, I try to bring back something I’ve seen or learned to help improve the guest experience and environment. You’ll notice little touches of Asia, Mexico, and even Hill Country Texas! We pride ourselves on our excellent customer service and treat every guest like family. We’re always a text away! You’ll see us out and about on our golf carts. The tiny handcrafted Hummingbird Tree House is perched on an elevated deck overlooking the front pond. and features a queen bed, a bed in the loft for two small kids, electricity, lights, fan, hummingbird stained glass windows, screened operable windows and a screened, operable porthole window in the kids loft. The deck has lights, tables and chairs and outdoor table and chairs and a thatch covered umbrella. There is no heat or AC in the tree house. You must bring your own sleeping bags, blankets and pillows. No food, smoking or pets allowed in the tree house. There is a rustic outhouse with a modern composting toilet, sink, faucet, lights, soap, etc. and a nearby cold water outdoor shower (no privacy), sink, counter and faucet. We tent camped for the Thanksgiving weekend and it was lovely! The wheelbarrow available for use was clutch for the walk-in site. Even though it was mostly flat, it saved us the hassle of carrying things down and back. They sell wood and are easily available for questions or if you need to place an order via text. The bathrooms were clean, had TP, and the water was hot! They are the main bathrooms for the whole property and are right next to our car park, so pretty convenient. Recommend a luggable loo otherwise. We were the only campers so had our pick of site. For this time of year, only appeared that half of the sites wouldve been useable. Some were muddy from deer and recent rains, plenty of room to spread out, though. There was unfortunately some glass spread around (user's fault, not properties) so be careful with pets or in warmer months, being barefoot. The beach was really clean and you can tell they do regular cleanups. Appreciated the extra social areas and walking the property was a great hike. It was super peaceful on the calm nights and cozy on the windy ones. Very much recommend this site and would return!

Absolutely amazing!!! I can’t wait to come back. Melissa was the best house and the property was even better than I expected. I was so comfortable, secure and felt like I was totally isolated. At the same time, I knew help or something I needed was just a text away. The fire pit made cooking a breeze, and I spent so much time in the sauna. The bathtub was amazing and fully stocked!

2 nights at Glamp like a Champ

This spot is such a gem. We loved meeting the goats and chickens and seeing how lovingly curated they have made this space. Jeffrey was so kind and a wealth of knowledge about farming and gardening. Our dog had a ball playing frisbee with enough space to really run, and the RV was so spacious! Beautiful night of bon firing under the stars. We will definitely be back <3

I loved the dispersed tent camping area, a perfect place for my dog to run around and I could see how it’d be easy for a large group! And the flexibility of being able to go to the tasting room up the hill to grab a wine bottle or two cannot be overstated. Very nice, would recommend.

I loved camping at the 4R Winery! Getting in and out was super easy. The pdf info pack provided on their website was really helpful in picking out the right option for us and having the firewood included in the fee was great. I really appreciate the dispersed camping in a state that is severely lacking. There are two things I would say to be aware of if you are looking to do dispersed camping. 1) The field is large but most of it doesn’t have shade so realistically, spots are a bit limited, and 2) there is nothing between you and other campers so even though there is decent distance between you, you can see and hear everything from neighbors. Also be aware that you are in wind turbine country and when the weather is right, you hear the whoosh whoosh of the blades from the nearest turbine. I got used to it about an hour after laying down to sleep lol. Other than that, it was great. Beautiful land, gorgeous starry sky and nature moving around you. I’d definitely stay there again!

Price was high for what they offered. No office staff in office. Dog park would have been nice but no one ☝️picked up so it was very dirty. They did have a dig wash station. The site grass was high with lots of bees. They dod come by layer to mow it which was nice

We stayed at 4R Ranch Winery for our very first Hipcamp trip, and it couldn’t have been better. The setting was absolutely beautiful — surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and incredible views that made every moment feel peaceful and special. Their wine was fantastic, the food was great, and the staff at the tasting room were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. If you’re looking for a scenic getaway with amazing wine, delicious food, and warm hospitality, this place is a must-visit. We can’t wait to come back! 🍷🌿

Weekend Trip to 4R Ranch Winery Campsite

This was our first camping trip - my wife and I since we’ve become empty nesters. We bought a new camper and tried it out only about an hour and a half from home. We wanted to go to Oktoberfest in Munster and stayed at the 4R Ranch. Walt took exceptionally good care of us and we had a fantastic time. Not only was the food and wine delicious, the winery is a beautiful, relaxing, scenic and a true Texas gem. We will definitely stay here again in the Hill country of North Texas!
