In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

Going further back in history, the Fuller's Folly River Ranch has an abundance of petrified wood, they say that if you have fossilized sea shells you were under water, but if you have petrified wood you had land creatures. Hunting for petrified wood is a fun adventure here. (But leave them for the next person to discover!) Weatherford is only 10 minutes away and Granbury is only 20 minutes away; both have great restaurants. We loved this spot! My dog is older now so it was really nice to have him be able to run around in a big field with soft grass. I put his booties on when we walked through the trails. The lake is gorgeous and peaceful, the woods are fun to explore, and the campsite is clean and private. Jamie was so welcoming. We will definitely be back here.

My friends and I loved our little getaway in the airstream. Their family was so welcoming! The animals were all nice and fun to be around. The actually camper was so cute and perfect for what we were looking for. The town itself was also such a sweet place. I highly recommend!!

Wonderful Experience! The night sky was beautiful, the land was perfect and Jamie was so so sweet. Just an amazing experience all around. I suggest bringing your fishing poles! The fish love to bite out there. Definitely coming back soon!

Great campground with access to river for fishing and kayaking. No cell service so be aware but it a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.

Great beautiful spot for my impromptu get away this weekend! My campsite had a beautiful view of the river and a great spot to put up my hammock overlooking the river as well. I’ll definitely need to plan a trip back when the river goes down and the weather decides to behave! The owners are very friendly as well!

GREAT OUT OF THE WAY AND HIDDEN CAMPING ON THE BRAZOS! We pitched a tent in between lots of trees and on the river. Don’t expect it to be manicured. Decent showers and restrooms within walking distance- in a style that one would expect at a campground with this name Gypsy in it. Very relaxed campground . Very friendly Owners/ hosts.
