Extremely quiet on a dead end road. We have 5 bars of AT&T 5g cell service, Verizon can be hit or miss. All other cell services do not work. We love the creek and our secluded valley. Only a few farmers live down the road. This makes for a very private experience that can be naturalist / clothing optional friendly. The creek is secluded with plenty of trees to enjoy however you wish.
Spaces are extremely level and there are good Satellite tv abilities. We have firewood on site and two stone fire pits. Nearby is a wonderful old grist mill, Tim's Ford state park, Tim's Ford lake, Jack Daniels Distillery and other attractions. We are also about 45 minutes from Huntsville, AL with the NASA Space and Science Center. Space #1 is closest to the road. Space #2 has a larger patio. This retreat is the Perfect way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, yet not too far away from essentials. Hiking adventures nearby include University of the South Domain, Buggy Top, Walls Of Jerico and many more.

There is plenty of privacy, even though you are right near a public road that has very little traffic. There are no other campsites nearby and the owner lives 1/2 mile away. Three years ago our multi-generational family decided to go on an adventure. We had talked about moving to the woods for years, but finally decided to turn our dreams into reality. After hiking through what felt like every property for sale over 100 acres in North Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we finally found the perfect spot.
Why do we call our property Whippoorwill Woods? Did you know that whippoorwills don’t nest in trees? They lay their eggs on the ground in the forest. They’re birds that love camping! As soon as we heard the whippoorwills start singing in the spring, we knew it was the perfect name.
We’re so excited to share our property with campers who love nature as much as we do. We specifically set up the campsites to give as much privacy as possible. We hope you’ll come visit and soak up the bird songs, the wind in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. We have 20 acres of savannah grassland full of native plants and wildflowers and over 80 untouched acres full of awesome rock formations and creeks with waterfalls available for you to hike. There's a stocked fish pond for catch and release fishing and a gorgeous view overlooking the Cumberland Plateau and the Sherwood Valley.
Experienced and beginner campers are welcome! We live on one side of the property, so we’re available to assist (setting up tents for the first few times is no joke!) or we’re happy to give you as much space and solitude as you need. We have three campsites available in the native savannah grassland, and one that is a "hike-in and choose your favorite spot in the woods" site. We have a porta-potty available, but if you're hiking in, you'll want to bring some WAG bags with you. If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!

The best part about this site are the views! Relax on the side of the Cumberland Plateau while overlooking Burroughs Cove and the Elk River. You can see the camp sites from the main road, so there will be some road noise.
Sites 1/2 are hard/large graveled, tent camping will be very challenging, heavy duty tent stakes are highly recommended with mats/padding.
There is an electrical box at each end of the hard graveled parking areas (Sites 1 and 2) with 20- and 30-amp plugs, plus 110v. If the power is not working, please check the panel and turn on/reset the breakers, many of our guests turn them off when departing. If you are at Site #2 and the steps above do not work, please check/do the same at the Site #1 panel (it is the master power source).
Water is NOT available on site. NOTE: Depending on the time of year (warmer months only) a water container with a limited amount of NON-POTABLE water is on site for your use. Please plan on filling your water reservoir(s) PRIOR to arriving. There is an outhouse for all guests, picnic tables and fire rings for Sites 1 and 2. The camping area is fairly close to SR-50 so please expect to hear some road noise, more so in the winter months.
The entrance/driveway is on a small incline, if you are traveling in a light vehicle and a heavy camper, it's best to maintain a slow and steady speed to the camp site (for almost everyone, this is not an issue). If you are towing a camper, we recommend the total length of the vehicle and the trailer not exceeding 30ft, There is not a significant place to "turn around" at the sites and novice drivers (not used to backing out of tight spots with longer rigs) may find this very challenging.
There is a double gate that is usually closed, and latched so it stays closed, it is not "locked". The site is self-serve (not manned), Site #1 is to the left, Site #2 is to the right, and Site #3 is down the path past the outhouse at the bottom of the path. It is recommended that campers set up early for Site 3 (still daylight) to get an idea of the layout. Parking for Site #3 is by the shed at the main entrance and power is not available at the site.

We raise Scottish Highland cattle, goats, sheep, and alpacas on 90 acres of reclaimed coal mine land. We are using the animals and permaculture techniques to repair this land to a vibrant, productive place. The view was very special and not something you can get everywhere! It was also nice because we had the place to ourselves so it felt very private! We weren’t bothered by the cars or noise. Only thing we didn’t like was the pit toilet, it was just gross. We’ve done camping with pit toilets before and been fine but this one was bad, we used our own setup which was much more pleasant for us!

When i arrived and pulled up the driveway, the skies literally opened up! STUNNING. A friend and I car camped and we were the only ones there so the was an abundance of s
pace( we reserved site #1 BTW) I will add, if your going camping with a large group, rent spots 1&2 and you will "have your cake and eat it too!" The entire area was clean and well maintained. The gate at the end of the driveway added a little more peace of mind when we shut it down for the night!

I enjoyed staying here. The view is really nice from RV Site 1. RV sites 1 and 2 are close together so be aware that you won't have a private spot if both sites are reserved. The instructions provided by the host are very clear, so pay attention to those. I had different neighbors both nights I was there but it was fine. Overall I enjoyed it and do recommend!

Great camping site for our first time out in our camper! Beautiful, quiet spot. Creek was real close and the water was clear and very cold! Must be spring fed. Perfect for some private skinny dipping! Tons of cool rocks in the creek bed too if you're into that. Just bring your big spray!
It rained quite a bit unfortunately, but that didn't damper our time that much. And Lindsey even reached out to make sure we were good with the flood watch. Really appreciated her checking up on us.
The sites are pretty close together, so we were greatful no one else booked so we could enjoy our private time.
Would definitely come back to this spot!

What a beautiful piece of property this is. The land, the trees, the creek, the natural springs. Just beautiful! Lindsey was an amazing host. He was very quick to respond to my messages. Just a very kind man. I highly recommend this as one of your overnight stays ahould you find yourself in this part of TN.

Absolutely spectacular view! We spent two days here, and although there wasn’t really much room to hike, it was such a lovely overlook and a great place to decompress

Our stay at Red Coach was flawless. Communication was great; we knew right where to go. We liked our campsite (A-15) as it overlooked a woods area and not another camper. We would definitely return in the future.

We loved our stay at Elkhead Overlook so much. It is next to the road, but it's a small enough road that it wasn't busy enough to bother us. The outhouse wasn't perfect but it was nice to have it! It is a bit windy up there but the view is worth it. Highly recommend.

Very peaceful property! Site 3 was an easy back in and faced a pasture and wooded bluff. Only a short drive to Tims Ford State Park and nice hiking. Would stay here again!
