This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports.
The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site.
We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Wild Yough is located in Southern Garrett County, Maryland very close to Herrington Manor State Park, Swallows Falls State Park, and the quaint mountain village of Oakland. The property adjoins thousands of acres of Garrett State Forest and hundreds of acres of state land along the Youghiogheny River. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land.The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river.If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Take the trail to “High Bluff”, then cross the Snyder property line (Permission for trail access only – do not leave trail!), then descend down and cross the bridge across Herrington Manor Creek (a stocked trout stream!). Me and my partner chose to rent this cabin for thanksgiving. It was absolutely fabulous, the cabin is so cozy, the composting toilet did not bring any smell, the shower was great, the bed was very comfortable and the view from the bed was the best part of the trip. I cannot wait to rent this again.
Virgil and his wife were also very welcoming. I highly recommend renting this property.

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest
Virgil & Pam really go above and beyond at The Fern House! The cabin was comfy and stocked with everything one could need for an extended weekend away. Our hosts were generous and gracious. They provide great communication and hospitality. We spent 3 nights and wish it could've been longer! Our pups loved the mile walk around the property each morning plus great hiking spots nearby. We took advantage of the fireplace, local eatery suggestions, and the loft was the perfect hideaway for resting and waking to beautiful wooded views. We cant wait to come back!

We absolutely loved staying in the Fernhouse!! It was perfect. It was adorable and so cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was wonderful! So close to hiking trails and lots of outdoor recreation. The hike around the property was beautiful and our dogs loved walking it with us in the morning. The outdoor area is super cozy too. Virgil was so kind and welcoming. We will be back again in another season!! I would highly recommend.

This was my 3d stay at the Fern house. Virgil goes above and beyond, the little house is very comfy and well appointed, and it’s so great to have a mile long trail right at your doorstep for early morning and evening walks! Virgil even left biscuits for my dog ❤️
I think of this place as a home away from home.

Great cabin close to Frank Lloyd Wright homes and Ohiopyle State Park! Wonderful deck. You could just make this your whole trip. Virgil is very responsive and he and Pam are great people I had the pleasure of meeting. Would def return. You'll need to climb a ladder to access the lofted bedroom. Watch those angled beams!

Virgil and his wife were so very welcoming. The property has beautiful ferns throughout the surrounding woods. We loved it. The cabin had everything we needed. Beautiful inside. I would highly recommend this cabin. Close to all the attractions and in a relaxed setting. Also, dog friendly. Our shepherd Max is afraid of fireworks so we decided to take him to the country. This was a perfect setting.

The tiny home was perfect size for my husband and I with our pup. We enjoyed the fire pit with included firewood and the gas grill, but arrived after it had been raining quite a bit and the mosquitoes and gnats were terrible. Expected since you are in the woods, but fyi to bring bug spray as there is no screened-in areas to hang out outside.
Even though the house was located fairly close to the road, it was still peaceful and mostly quiet with occasional cars. We loved the sleeping loft- so cozy and we slept great listening to the birds and trees;) We enjoyed the peace and quiet so much, we spent a lot of time just relaxing at the house. The owners checked in often if they saw us outside, and were lovely to chat with!

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest
We had an incredible weekend getaway at Virgil and Pam's property. It was a lovely, cozy, quaint little cabin that was a perfect place to relax away from the city. We had planned to do some winter hiking and explore the area around Ohiopyle, which was very near to the cabin, but we ended up staying in all weekend (with the exception of a nice walk around the property) due to the weather. It did get very cold, but the cabin is equipped with multiple heaters and electric fireplaces that kept us warm. Virgil kindly checked in regularly and reminded us to turn on the heated blanket on the bed -- it made a huge difference in the night when it was snowy and windy! The kitchen has everything you need (hot plates, microwave, utensils, pots/pans, skillet) to make nice meals, and the gift basket was a very nice touch. :) Thank you Virgil and Pam for your hospitality!
