The primitive campground is in the corner of a small 40 acre farm owned by Matt Polcyn. He started the campground 13 years ago because of his love for nature and real camping. He enjoys traveling in many places in the States and the Caribbean islands and loves finding places off of the beaten path and not commercialized. Because of his interest and love for primitive camping he decided to open the campground in order to provide the same opportunity as a getaway primitive camping location that he tries to find when he travels. We now just added a shower in the trees, warm water rinse off area. (this is available between Memorial Day and until it get too cold again in the fall)

Some tame animals that you will see are Lowline cows ( miniature cows), Chickens, Pigs, Miniature Donkeys, Dogs, Cats. North of us 20 minutes you will find Sugarcreek ( the little Switzerland ) as well as south east of us Coshocton with canoeing and biking trails as well as Roscoe Village.

Shady Owl Ranch is a 18 acre non-profit animal sanctuary with dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and turkeys. The cats and poultry are free range so if you are fearful of chickens, ducks or turkeys, you probably shouldn't stay here. 😁 Owners Chuck and Amanda moved from Northern California and re-established their rescue here in Central Ohio. We have two finished studio cabins. They are very close (2 miles) to the town of Mount Vernon, OH with hiking trails on the property. Pets are allowed but there are free range animals on the property so their safety is priority. We have added a 2 acre fenced in area for dogs off leash. It's our version of a Dog Park. Plenty of bike trails around town and only 20 miles to Mohican State Park. Farm fresh eggs from our rescued chickens and local honey are available for purchase. Money from our vacation rental helps with feeding our rescue animals and expanding our non-profit animal sanctuary.

We charge by the carload & there are different rates for driving back toward the woods for camping depending on the number of wheels & the weight of your vehicle (a factor on the wear & tear on the land). We believe in going outside to play, growing & eating fresh food, strengthening family bonds and promoting the awareness of our natural resources. My niece is about to start kindergarten so we decided to take her glamping as a summer adventure before she starts, and Shady Owl was amazing. Both cabins were really cute and well equipped with everything you can think of - you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into everything, from games and dvds to starter wood/egg cartons for the fires to bug spray. We had a blast cooking out over a campfire, spending time on the pond in the peddle-boat, enjoying the gorgeous land, and most of all: all the animals! My niece was in love. I can't tell you how many times we had to go visit the turkeys, chickens, and roosters. Not to mention the cats and kittens. And we absolutely loved the dogs that just leisurely stopped over to say hi during our stay. We all are huge animal-lovers (I work at a city dog-kennel a couple hours away), so we truly had a blast! Thank you for sharing your beautiful farm space with others!

We had a wonderful stay at the United Cabin!! It is roomier than we expected, comfortable, clean, and well stocked. The hosts were awesome- responsive and helpful. PJ even went to the store to grab us coffee and sweeteners as we arrived because we realized we had not brought any. The gravel driveway they added was great. It rained and stormed a good bit while we were there and my mom was able to get her Honda Civic parked right in front of the cabin and drive back out no problem at all. The added internet worked well for us.. Peace of mind for my mom who has heart failure, and for myself being able to monitor my type 1 diabetic child all the way to the pond. Definitely a great place for family memories, and we will be back!!

We really enjoyed our stay at the A-frame. It was very quite and private. The fishing pond was stocked with voracious pan fish and bass, which my daughter thoroughly enjoyed. There was plenty of open space for my dog to explore. Inside the cabin was very clean and comfortable. I really liked the back deck and the view of the trees. We'd absolutely stay again!

I enjoyed my stay. I liked the deck in the back of the cabin. I'm glad I brought a good pair of hiking boots and warm blankets. As long as you not a person who expects their cabins to be hootell room then I think you will like it. If you are a tent camper and don't wanna worry about pitching tent this perfect or if you are used to glamping and wanna try something less polished this good for that to.
