It’s truly a peaceful site. Tellurian is centrally located between Charlotte NC, Asheville NC, and Spartanburg SC in the small town of Casar, NC. We are located in a rural setting in the foothills on the edge of the South Mountains Range, a branch of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Thank you for checking out our place! We are Jud and Amanda Wortman. We have three children – Emma Grace and Baxter (twins) and Elena Jo. As a family, we enjoy canoeing, kayaking and camping. We live 9 miles from Tellurian on a family farm. We have always enjoyed quiet secluded campsites, river floats and sitting by the river. After years of looking all over the mountains for a river property we could call our own, our favorite spot on the river came up for sale. It just so happened it was nearly halfway between where we both grew up. After many sleepless nights worrying if we could succeed or not (it was much larger than properties we had been looking for), we bought it! Our favorite spot on the river was virtually inaccessible by any way other than floating. But after hundreds of hours of hard work, we think we have developed a place where others too can enjoy the things we do about the property. We dream big and Tellurian remains a work in progress, but we feel we have created a place where folks can enjoy the peacefulness of nature, the river and incredible views. Naming our campground proved to be one of the most challenging tasks throughout the process of developing it. After many ideas and brainstorming sessions as a family, we decided to go with Tellurian. My Neighbor has started his own Campsite, "The Swimming Hole". If mine is booked up and you still want to camp, look him up. His is better suited for small groups but has much more privacy. We have a new road to the campsite; you can now drive down with two-wheel drive vehicle or RV down and park near your tent! There is plenty of soft sand to set up one tent or ten tents; large groups are welcome for an extra fee. A Porta-Potty is available at the campsite. Swimming is usually possible at the base of the falls; however, large amounts of rain can change conditions and make it unusable. I should also add, this is not a completely private campsite deep in the woods. The camp is visible from a shared driveway, and my residence is up a hill that overlooks the area. Also, I do not own the land on the other side of the stream. Occasionally, the owners of that land will spend a weekend afternoon enjoying the waterfall view also. Still much quieter and more private than a regular campground. Glamping tents and additional camping tents are available through a local company. Look in the pictures for the tent with red, white, and blue balloons. Message me for details. Close to US National Whitewater Center (mountain biking, whitewater rafting, kayaking), Kings Mountain National Military Park (Horseback riding and history), Crowders Mountain (Hiking), 3 miles off of I-85 and US-321 for people passing through.

My property consists of a ridge running east to west with the access road running along the south border.  the land slopes up to the ridge for about 300 feet, and then down to the river for about 800 feet.  The south side of the ridge has a small pond close to the road.  The rest is pasture, and an orchard and small vineyard.  The north side of the ridge is old growth timber, and shady and cool.  The two cabins are along the river.  One is perched on a ridge over looking the river and the other is right on the river.  The swimming hole is 30 feet from the lower cabin.  There is room for a couple campsites along the river also.  The south side of the ridge was a cotton farm decades ago, but was covered in timber when I bought it 12 years ago.  The north side has been in timber for the known history of the property.

Weekend Trip to Starlight Hills

The campground was peaceful and the hosts were very accommodating we had a clean campsite and a fire pit loaded with wood when we arrived. We loved the spa it was worth the money to relax there after a long days hike. I feel like being able to add on 30 minute increments should be an option also. As opposed to purchasing by the hour. We felt we needed just a little extra time there. The hot shower included with the spa also would not work for us which was disappointing considering this was most of the reason we originally chose to purchase the spa add on. We then tried to shower at the free shower near by but it was just too cold for us despite being heated. “Hot” shower was a stretch there it was warm at best. But overall, enjoyed it. The heater in the tents kept us warm even when the temp dropped to 32 for a night. The privacy at mtg 3 was awesome and loved hearing the church bells across the hills. If you plan to charge your phone make sure to bring a usb Compatible chord.

Beautiful spot. I’m more of a backcountry person, but this felt very comfortable. Big open field, as well as wooded area to wander in, nice platform to set your tent up on. Very easy to find. I’ll definitely be staying here again.

Weekend Trip to Starlight Hills

The sites were well maintained and clean! Site 1 offered good space with great access to the bathroom, showers, etc. while providing privacy at the same time. The location of the grounds offered great views of both the sunrise and sunsets, the common area has the best sunset mountain view while relaxing in the hammock and also offers a great stargazing spot. We had a great time camping here and will be back.

Weekend Trip to The swimming hole

Very aesthetically pleasing site right outside of Charlotte. The campsite is right on a creek with a nice swimming hole. The standing grill was a nice feature for grilling steaks. Great bench swing. It was the winter so there were no leaves on the trees so there was a slightly visible house through the trees during the daytime. At night a big flood light was shining from the house directly at the campsite. We didn't ask the host to turn it off but I'm sure they would have. Nice spot. Will return.

Weekend Trip to Tellurian Family Campground

We really enjoyed Tellurian! We stayed two nights and found the campground to be clean, easy to navigate, and packed full of opportunities to explore the river and take in the mountain views. We look forward to coming back when it isn't so cold outside so we can fully enjoy the river. The bath house was great and the kids enjoyed hanging out in the lounge area when it was too cold to play outside. Can't wait to come back!

We tent camped for New Year’s Eve. It was quiet and secluded with beautiful views from multiple places. He has thought of everything and addresses it with vending from last minute things you forgot to snacks to your firewood! The property was clean and well cared for with multiple options for accommodations. The pond looks like it would be amazing when open and the trail was a nice walk. The sites are large, but be advised that you may need some leveling and may not be able to park by the table/fire ring. This did not take away anything from the experience! The spa is worth the add on, especially if it’s cold! It very well done and private with uninhibited mountain views. There are also showers and porta potties (that were extremely clean!) William was friendly and responsive to questions. He has done a wonderful job with this site and we plan to go again.

This is over of the most beautiful camp sites I've been to so far. Spacious and plenty of room for setting up everything, with a view that's absolutely breathtaking. Fall asleep to the sounds of the waterfall literally tens of feet away. It's like renting out a state park all to yourself. Will absolutely stay again and again at this gem!

Easy to find, wide open space with a horizon view full of mountains! Beautiful sunset, great stargazing opportunities and an established firepit. Lots of room for parking, huge wood built deck for tents or chilling out. This was right off the road but not a lot of traffic or noise. There was 2 “outhouse “ structures but not potty usable ( unless I am a moron and didn’t know how to use them) but they both faced the trees so at least there was partial coverage.

Where to go

Lake Norman State Park

Find electricity-equipped cabins, RV parks with full-hookups, and tent campsites with firepits and hot showers at Lake Norman State Park. The 1.5-hour drive east brings campers to fun boating and fishing opportunities along a 375-foot long sandy beach. Rent a jet ski to cruise around, a speedboat to waterski, or a pontoon boat to leisurely experience the outdoor splendors of Lake Norman. Many companies also offer guided fishing tours as well as wakeboard, kayak, and canoe rentals. For campers looking for land activities, wander along Lake Norman Lakeshore Trail or hit the 30 miles of single-track mountain biking trails.

Whitewater Falls

Cascading 411 feet down, Whitewater Falls is dubbed the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. It’s open year-round from dawn until dusk and is roughly a 2-hour drive east from Shelby. While there isn’t any camping right at the falls, there are picnic tables and restrooms, making it a scenic stop for snacks or lunch. Then stay and savor the stunning views of the falls from two overlook areas—one of which is wheelchair-accessible. Peak hours are in the middle of the day, making morning or evening quieter times to visit.

Stone Mountain State Park

A 2-hour drive north from Shelby, Stone Mountain State Park delivers unparalleled hiking, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing, and a variety of camping options year-round. Find tent campsites with fire rings, or hike Widow’s Creek Trail to four primitive backcountry campsites. For more amenities, try an RV park nearby that features electrical and water hookups as well as communal dump stations. Then check out the restored Hutchinson Homestead farm and the 600-foot granite dome that looms in the background.

When to go

North Carolina experiences four distinct seasons. June, July, and August are peak summer months, with temperatures reaching a high of 89°F, accompanied by plenty of rain. January and February are the coldest months, with temperatures dropping slightly below freezing. The busiest times to visit Shelby are in spring and autumn, when warm weather with less humidity makes outdoor activities like hiking and biking most comfortable.
