The best star host campgrounds near Saratoga, New York

Just over an hour south of Lake George, Saratoga is steeped in history and natural beauty. The majestic Adirondacks loom on the horizon. Mineral water fountains dot the historic downtown of Saratoga Springs. The busy season is summer when crowds pack the Saratoga racetrack to watch the horses.

Campers who want to stay close to town can choose from private campgrounds and RV resorts. Several favorite family campgrounds are near the Daketown Town State Forest. If you don't mind bringing your own supplies, you can pitch a tent in many of the surrounding New York state parks. Most of them permit primitive camping.

The closest state campground is Moreau Lake State Park, about 13 miles from Sarasota Springs. The picturesque grounds have cabins and tent camping close to the lake. Campers get basic amenities like restrooms and picnic tables, plus a swimming beach, boat launch, and hiking trails. The park's nature center has kid-friendly programs, too.

On Great Sacandaga Lake, the Northampton Beach campground is nestled on the shore amid towering white pines. For those willing to venture north, Hearthstone Point campground has sites right on Lake George. Private driveway in the woods leads up a hill to three fabulous, secluded, country-setting camping locations with incredible views. Hay fields in front of you with woods behind you, you'll have peace and quiet in total seclusion but are only 5 minutes from downtown historic Greenwich village with diners and shops and a CVS. (The “Stewarts” gas station and market has firewood bundles!) Camping locations have no amenities but are cleared with mowed grass and have fire-pits. Pitch tent or bring RV, you'll enjoy yourself and the wildlife around you. Site 1 and 2 are adjacent to woods, site 3 is a wide-open-field site (great RV site) with the best panoramic and sunset view. As far as we know, this land has been occupied since shortly after the civil war.  It is actually two farms, combined into one around 1900. The main farmhouse was built out of the logs they cleared in 1879, and there are old foundations of the other original farm houses/barns as well.  All over the property (now woods) there are piles of stones that the original inhabitants pulled from the fields. The second farm house was built in 1901. Most of the total 240 acres were cleared pasture land at that time.  During the twenties and thirties the property was owned by an industrious couple from the City that lovingly turned it into more of a "rustic retreat"; damming a pond, planting ornamentals and upgrading the buildings.  There have been many owners over the years, but we are proud to say it has been with us the longest.  Our family bought it in 1961 and we have been trying to be good stewards ever since.  Come and visit our little patch of wilderness!

A short walk down to the pond and into the pines and you’re suddenly unaware of reality or time… Truly a beautiful piece of land. Perfect little cabin with such character. A hot wood stove to keep cozy as the falling snow blanketed the silent forest around us. Comfy sleeping pads, lights, plenty of wood, delicious water, cookware and other supplies. Outhouse was so clean and honestly adorable lol!! Truly the peaceful escape I needed. I want to come back and experience what energy every different season offers, I’m sure they each offer magic.

The site is beautiful. Trek to it is tough so UTV rental is recommended. Owners are responsive, accommodating, and kind. We had a great time aside from the bad weather.

Weekend Trip to Adirondack Rustic Retreat

We had a great stay here at the end of September with our dog. The property is beautiful. The place is really peaceful - just the sound of owls at night, no traffic noise at all. There's virtually no light pollution, so we had a really nice view of the stars at night. The beach area was well equipped with a fire pit, propane grill, basic utensils, tiki torches and even a screen room so you can eat without being bothered by bugs (though that wasn't really a problem when we were there). The cabin was cozy too. Overall, a very nice experience. We would love to come back again.

Very cool spot. Do be advised that they have weddings and events until 10:00 pm, so there is a bit of noise and music, but nothing too disturbing. Very friendly welcome, free firewood. I got to pitch my tent on a well built platform, which helped reduce the September chill.

Beautiful private campsite with amazing views. We booked site #1 and didn't see anyone around. Went to Stewart's for firewood but the host also left some wood for us. Good for stargazing. Great mid point between Saratoga Springs NY and Manchester VT too. Would recommend!
