Farm stays near Lake Placid

Nestled in the Adirondacks, this New York village blends natural beauty and outdoor adventure for memorable camping. The mountain air and cool summers made Lake Placid a premier vacation destination during the Gilded Age. But you don't need a big budget to pitch a tent, cast a fishing line or launch a canoe into the tranquil waters.

The town itself is really between two lakes: Lake Placid and Lake Mirror. The latter is named for its clear waters, offering stunning views from a kayak or canoe. Not far from downtown is the public beach. The sandy shore is excellent for swimming, with a dock and diving platforms.

Lake Placid has hosted two winter Olympics. Today, the former facilities are open to the public. You can bobsled with a pro driver down the Olympic track, or take in the view from the 120-meter tall ski jump.

Explore the Brewster Peninsula nature trails while you're in town. The easy loops pass through quiet pine groves and hug the southern shore of Lake Placid.

Experienced hikers should consider pitching a tent at Meadowbrook campground. About 4 miles from town, the grounds are right next to the Scarface trailhead and close to the Haystack Mountain trail.

If you prefer to camp closer to town, check out the private campgrounds and camping cabins. These are also your best bets for creature comforts like Wi-Fi, as well as electrical hook-ups for RVs.

First-rate trout fishing can be found on the West Branch Ausable River. Get an early morning start by spending the night at the Wilmington Notch campground. Several tent sites are a stone's throw from the river, and the facilities cover basics like hot showers. The grounds are close to Veterans' Memorial Highway, a scenic drive leading to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

Saranac Lake is about 10 miles west, but well worth the trip for kayakers. There are four lakes here connected by locks, making it ideal for all-day exploring in small craft. The Saranac Lake Islands campground puts you right on the water. Most of the sites are primitive but include several tiny islands that you can call your own for the night.

They blinked their eyes and their children are gone, so this beautiful 50 acre diverse property and its private trail system are meant to be shared. Nestled in a mature, private pine forest, this well cared for property boasts abundant wildlife and a network of walking, skiing and mountain biking trails which take you past wetlands, cliffs and a variety of forest types. There are quiet woods to walk through, miles of dirt roads to walk or ride on. We are close to a short hike on Mount Philo or Raven's Ridge. We are 15 minutes away from Lake Champlain and 30 minutes from Burlington and Middlebury.

A low-key place to enjoy nature, rest, and reflect. The twin cottages at Hand’s Cove Orchard perch on the edge of Lake Champlain in Shoreham, Vermont. The property has hosted guests in seasonal cottages since the 1960s. The organically certified orchard was last operated around 2007. Since that time, a good portion of the apple trees has succumbed to disease and crowding by native and invasive species, though many continue to thrive and produce fruit—supporting a healthy and diverse wildlife population. Close by is Champlain Orchards, offering a farm market, cider garden, and PYO fruit. There are several other farm stands in the area offering locally produced vegetables, meat, eggs, maple products, and ice cream, as well as general stores and a hardware store within 20 minutes. We are located along one of the Heart of Vermont Bikeways, part of a network of bicycle routes known as Lake Champlain Bikeways, spanning the Lake Champlain Valley of Vermont, New York, and Québec. Not far away are Middlebury (home of Middlebury College) and Vergennes—both offering shopping, dining, and Amtrak service. Our land steward, Melita, is a retired landscape gardener who enjoys ecological landscaping and trail-making. A short walking loop takes you from the cottages to our lake access and up around the far meadow, which is in the process of being reforested. Resting benches are placed seasonally at the lakeshore and along the far meadow path. Swimming is not recommended, but access for experienced kayak and canoe users is available. Our shale beach is a picturesque, relaxing, and history-rich spot to while away the hours in your camp chair. Birders will enjoy an abundant variety of shore and inland species. Our land management objectives include conservation, forest restoration, and agriculture—fostering refuge and recovery for the land and its inhabitants: plants, pollinators, wildlife, and humans alike. A portion of our 100+ acre farm is leased to a neighboring farmer for hay production. Our non-commercial orchard is a thread of history connecting us to the nearby vibrant, commercially productive orchards that are part of Shoreham’s rich agricultural heritage.

Conserved by the South Hero Land Trust, the historic Sawyer Bay Farm on the Island of South Hero was converted to grazing beef cattle. Our farm name is Health Hero Farm. We practice intensive planned grazing, moving the cattle daily to fresh grass. The herd may be near the campsites or completely out of sight, somewhere on our 180 acres. While we were building a house, we camped in the equipment shed during the summer and grew to value its convenience. Joan's enjoyment of cycling inspired her to designate the farm stand as a "bike stop" where visitors could buy a snack, get water, fix their bikes and use the unique islands amenity of a composing toilet in a converted ice fishing shack. South Hero is an agricultural island, as well as a summer tourist destination with numerous outdoor activities. It is also only a half-hour away from Burlington, and the drive is pleasurable. Pitch your tent, stow your gear under cover and explore all the islands have to offer. Yes, this is a summer destination, with great cycling, boating and swimming. We are a grass-fed beef operation, Health Hero Farm, on the island of South Hero. (You can read more about us on our farm website. ) Our farm is on the bike route around the islands, with access to many other vacation activities. Pitch your tent in the farmstead or in half of our empty equipment shed 30' x 60'. Or tool on down the farm road and be alone with the cattle and grass. In the shed, which is open on the north side, you have shelter from the rain, sun and wind. We have two campsites that can share a microwave, hot plate, refrigerator, camp sink and coffee maker in the barn. Lots of storage under roof for bikes and luggage. Our composting toilet (from Natures Head Composting Toilet) is a unique amenity -- installed in a retired ice-fishing shack (on skis). During the busy summer months, we may have a port-o-let (a.k.a. port-a-potty) with professional service. In the winter, the equipment shed not available. We rent out vehicle and boat storage in the equipment shed and cannot accommodate camping there. However, we have ample parking for RVs at any time of the year. And if you are an experienced snow camper, we have several locations to choose from. We have a farm stand where you can buy a few snacks. If you want to try our beef, we'll be happy to show you our freezers. We are 2 miles from a convenience store that packs an amazing array of products into a small space. We are close to a gem of a public beach, a winery (Snow Farm Vineyard), apple orchards, a public school playground, and miles of scenic driving. Local farmers markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays offer some of the best produce from these agricultural islands. We also own 1000' frontage on Lake Champlain, which you may enjoy. It is difficult to access, but affords privacy and serenity. We allow campfires on the gravel areas of the farm and on the beach, where you can gather dead wood. If you want to host a large group, you will need to reserve both campsites and rent a port-o-let (Vermont's lingo for porta-potty) if we don't already have one. Additional fees might apply. There is no RV electrical hookup; however, the equipment shed has electric outlets for your use. Additional fees apply for energy intensive appliances, such as heaters or air conditioners. There is no water hookup; however, we can fill your tanks with a hose from a potable water supply. Generators are not allowed, unless you are sufficiently distanced from other campers and our neighbors. Other accommodations may be available. Just ask! We have many resources, and want you to have a great visit.

This is our home and our family visits often so please expect some cars passing by the site. We are happy to share this beautiful space and hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Take a walk through the woods, take your kayak out on Otter Creek starting at the base of our driveway or relax with a campfire. Willow Hill Farm is a family-run working horse farm. We train , teach, board horses, and run a day camp. We had a resident camp for 40 years. We have mountains in our backyard and the Au Sable River with world class fishing bordering our meadow for a half mile. Great swimming there, also! We are 45 minutes from Lake Placid and 30 minutes from Plattsburgh. Montreal and Burlington, VT are a 1.5 hour drive. Lake Champlain is 15 minutes away. Hiking, boating, and swimming are all close, and riding lessons are available on the farm. Most hip camp sites are near where resident campers stayed. There are two sleeping cabins with many bunks. Each has two small rooms where a counselor slept and one large room. There are screened windows with shutters on all sides and screen doors without locks on each end. There are electrical outlets and over head lights in the cabins. We have plans to improve the cabins. Past the cabins is the Green with 4 loose stone firepits. Across from the cabins is the shower house with four hot showers, sink, and toilets. Showers and toilets have closed stalls. Currently, the water system is above ground and will not work in freezing temps. We have installed an outhouse for year round use. All water is from our excellent well. On each side of the former(closed) dining are spots. There are electrical outlets on the outside of the dining hall. People with campers may like to park in the riding arena near the barnyard. There are outlets, but no toilets. Good water is available from the barns. Lovely views of sky and mountains! We also have a beautiful 50 acre field with a household type outlet, but no well. There is an outhouse there. Excellent sky viewing here. This is where we jump and train our horses. Horses may be turned out in this field.

We're in close proximity to copious hiking trails, mountain biking, fishing on the Au Sable river, 'the flume' swimming hole, pubs and restaurants, and nearby Adirondack towns including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Keene.  Aside from the lean-to located in the back corner of the property, there is access to electricity and water, a fire pit and outdoor seating. The property has hosted guests in seasonal cottages since the 1960s. The organically certified orchard was last operated around 2007. Since that time, a good portion of the apple trees has succumbed to disease and crowding by native and invasive species, though many continue to thrive and produce fruit—supporting a healthy and diverse wildlife population. Resting benches are placed seasonally at the lakeshore and along the far meadow path. Swimming is not recommended, but access for experienced kayak and canoe users is available. Our shale beach is a picturesque, relaxing, and history-rich spot to while away the hours in your camp chair. Birders will enjoy an abundant variety of shore and inland species. Our land management objectives include conservation, forest restoration, and agriculture—fostering refuge and recovery for the land and its inhabitants: plants, pollinators, wildlife, and humans alike. A portion of our 100+ acre farm is leased to a neighboring farmer for hay production. Conserved by the South Hero Land Trust, the historic Sawyer Bay Farm on the Island of South Hero was converted to grazing beef cattle. Our farm name is Health Hero Farm. We practice intensive planned grazing, moving the cattle daily to fresh grass. The herd may be near the campsites or completely out of sight, somewhere on our 180 acres. While we were building a house, we camped in the equipment shed during the summer and grew to value its convenience. Joan's enjoyment of cycling inspired her to designate the farm stand as a "bike stop" where visitors could buy a snack, get water, fix their bikes and use the unique islands amenity of a composing toilet in a converted ice fishing shack. South Hero is an agricultural island, as well as a summer tourist destination with numerous outdoor activities. It is also only a half-hour away from Burlington, and the drive is pleasurable. Pitch your tent, stow your gear under cover and explore all the islands have to offer. Yes, this is a summer destination, with great cycling, boating and swimming. We are a grass-fed beef operation, Health Hero Farm, on the island of South Hero. (You can read more about us on our farm website. ) Our farm is on the bike route around the islands, with access to many other vacation activities. Pitch your tent in the farmstead or in half of our empty equipment shed 30' x 60'. Or tool on down the farm road and be alone with the cattle and grass. In the shed, which is open on the north side, you have shelter from the rain, sun and wind. We have two campsites that can share a microwave, hot plate, refrigerator, camp sink and coffee maker in the barn. Lots of storage under roof for bikes and luggage. Our composting toilet (from Natures Head Composting Toilet) is a unique amenity -- installed in a retired ice-fishing shack (on skis). During the busy summer months, we may have a port-o-let (a.k.a. port-a-potty) with professional service. In the winter, the equipment shed not available. We rent out vehicle and boat storage in the equipment shed and cannot accommodate camping there. However, we have ample parking for RVs at any time of the year. And if you are an experienced snow camper, we have several locations to choose from. We have a farm stand where you can buy a few snacks. If you want to try our beef, we'll be happy to show you our freezers. We are 2 miles from a convenience store that packs an amazing array of products into a small space. We are close to a gem of a public beach, a winery (Snow Farm Vineyard), apple orchards, a public school playground, and miles of scenic driving. Local farmers markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays offer some of the best produce from these agricultural islands. We also own 1000' frontage on Lake Champlain, which you may enjoy. It is difficult to access, but affords privacy and serenity. We allow campfires on the gravel areas of the farm and on the beach, where you can gather dead wood. If you want to host a large group, you will need to reserve both campsites and rent a port-o-let (Vermont's lingo for porta-potty) if we don't already have one. Additional fees might apply. There is no RV electrical hookup; however, the equipment shed has electric outlets for your use. Additional fees apply for energy intensive appliances, such as heaters or air conditioners. There is no water hookup; however, we can fill your tanks with a hose from a potable water supply. Generators are not allowed, unless you are sufficiently distanced from other campers and our neighbors. Other accommodations may be available. Just ask! Willow Hill Farm is a family-run working horse farm. We train , teach, board horses, and run a day camp. We had a resident camp for 40 years. We have mountains in our backyard and the Au Sable River with world class fishing bordering our meadow for a half mile. Great swimming there, also! We are 45 minutes from Lake Placid and 30 minutes from Plattsburgh. Montreal and Burlington, VT are a 1.5 hour drive. Lake Champlain is 15 minutes away. Hiking, boating, and swimming are all close, and riding lessons are available on the farm. Most hip camp sites are near where resident campers stayed. There are two sleeping cabins with many bunks. Each has two small rooms where a counselor slept and one large room. There are screened windows with shutters on all sides and screen doors without locks on each end. There are electrical outlets and over head lights in the cabins. We have plans to improve the cabins. Past the cabins is the Green with 4 loose stone firepits. Across from the cabins is the shower house with four hot showers, sink, and toilets. Showers and toilets have closed stalls. Currently, the water system is above ground and will not work in freezing temps. We have installed an outhouse for year round use. All water is from our excellent well. On each side of the former(closed) dining are spots. There are electrical outlets on the outside of the dining hall. People with campers may like to park in the riding arena near the barnyard. There are outlets, but no toilets. Good water is available from the barns. Lovely views of sky and mountains! We also have a beautiful 50 acre field with a household type outlet, but no well. There is an outhouse there. Excellent sky viewing here. This is where we jump and train our horses. Horses may be turned out in this field.

Joan is an amazing host and the farm is breathtakingly beautiful! She made sure my stay at the base camp was comfortable and that I had everything I needed while giving me plenty of space (and recommendations) for doing my own thing. Getting to explore the island as the fall colors were popping was the break I needed. The steak I purchased from their stock was also ridiculously good with this garlic Parmesan "Better Butter" that I got from the local store. So good. If I lived on the East Coast, I'd definitely visit again!

Tip-top spot with breathtaking views in a great location, 45 minutes from Burlington and 45m-1.5h from the interior (Waterbury, Killington, Woodstock, Montpelier, Stowe), right in the heart of the Green Mountains. Melinda and Dave were very responsive to our messages and just great hosts. They maintain a beautiful, flat site with a lot of privacy, a stocked and cleaned outhouse, and complementary firewood. What’s not to love? This was our first trip with our rig up to Vermont and it’s definitely gonna be part of a regular rotation. This was a great site!! It was exactly what was stated in the profile and what we were looking for. It has both 30 & 50 amp hook up, water and sewer. But the best part was our visitors in the morning. If you love horses this is the place. We had horses great us in the morning (do not feed the horses) not more than 10 feet away from our back door. In the afternoon we were able to see lessons going on from our chairs in a nice grassy area behind the trailer. All of the people at the farm were very friendly. The area around the farm has a lot to offer. Great hiking, shopping and restaurants. Very relaxing.

Make sure to bring a camera when you visit, the view is not something you’ll want to forget, nor the beautiful sites around the campground. This is a must-stay, and I won’t be surprised if Ken ends up being booked year-round!!! The Mill Creek runs along with this property, which features access to the scenic Dunkley Falls & The Black Hole — a cavernous geological anomaly. This famous swimming spot is a perfect place to test your nerve with a backflip off its 20 ft cliffs or just take a leisurely swim in the naturally formed glacier pool. Like to fish?
