We love Barry’s land and have stayed multiple times. The eagles were flying over the river and an unbelievable amount of lightning bugs were out in the fields and in the trees. We took river tubes and were able to tube down the river a bit when the water level came down after having rained a lot the day before.

Absolutely gorgeous area! The school was exactly what we signed up for, very interesting to spend some time around. The towns were close and there were some awesome local restaurants. The woods were super cool to explore and the front yard of the school had the perfect amount of room for yard games and such. Plenty of wildlife, found a baby porcupine in the woods very close by! Would definitely recommend!!

We really loved this campsite. It was very private and quiet. We had great campfires thanks to the availability of lots of dry wood. Everything was very clean and Nathan was responsive to all of our questions. We especially loved our hike into Zoar Valley. We walked on the Valentine Flats Trail, which ended at the confluence of two rivers.

I loved this site! Private and comfortably hosted myself and my friends for Memorial Day weekend. Close to a beautiful trail and easy access to the Gorge nearby, I highly recommend checking this place out! A family of owls lives nearby, don’t be alarmed by the odd sounds at night- Barred Owls can sound somewhat like coyotes but it was very neat hearing them in the dark.

I'm super envious of Todd's amazing property. This is a large, gorgeous track of land that is bordered by a river (he calls it a creek, but it's pretty large) and backs right up to game lands. There's a port-a-potty, several well-arranged campsites to choose from, and plenty of room for your doggos to run around and have fun. This is also the cleanest campsite I've ever seen. My only worry while there was with my dogs trying to go into the road, because it was slightly busy over Memorial Day weekend. I do intend to retru on a less busy weekend.

I loved staying at the Crosspatch Horse Ranch! I set up right by the pond where I could watch the horses come to drink out of the pond and run in the field. It is very peaceful but only 10 minutes from Ellicottville. Dolly is very welcoming and is always quick to respond. I highly recommend staying here. I liked it so much that I am staying here again!

Our group is relatively new to camping and we were looking for somewhere to set up for Memorial Day Weekend. I stumbled across The Heron online based on the good vibe/impression I got from the photos. The Farm itself is stunning. There’s so much to see - you’ll find hidden gems all over the property. The people who work there are wonderful - so kind and welcoming. It’s clear they genuinely care about the place and care that you experience what they love about it during your stay. They happened to be doing wellness activities all weekend, along with a May Day festival with live music. When we camp, we normally leave our campsite and venture off to hike at parks in the surrounding areas. We only left The Heron once during the weekend for supplies - we had everything we could want to do right there, so there was no need to leave. We got so much more than we expected. Certainly the most memorable camping experience we’ve had thus far. We’ll be back for their yearly music festival in July!

Weekend Trip to Elk Valley Creekside

Fantastic property with a great creek view from the tent. Saw bald eagles flying through the creek every morning, one even carrying a large bass. It was a chilly weekend but Barry provided a propane heater to keep the tent warm and dry fire wood for a cooking/camp fire. We arrived really late at night and they had a campfire burning and showed us the property.

Chappel Hill Tree Farm

This 140-acre property is an old farmstead last farmed in the 1950's. It lies in the Allegheny Plateau region of NW Pennsylvania and is mostly hardwood forest today. It is surrounded by thousands of acres of private forestland and is very secluded. Our goal is to provide a private and secluded yet accessible camping experience where you will see more deer than people. AANR/TNS friendly. There is excellent Verizon and T-Mobile service. The skies are dark at night and the sounds of nature will surround you. Campsite 1 is near where the farmhouse and barn once stood. The site is shaded by large, old maples that once shaded the farmhouse. Old fields surround the farmstead, but the woods are a short walk away. It is the most popular campsite with an outhouse, fire ring and picnic table available. Campsite 2 is on the other side of the property. There is a fire ring but no picnic table. Both sites easily accommodate anything from tents to RV's. Each site has a separate, gated, gravel road access. These are the only 2 campsites on the property and they are far enough apart (1/4 mile) to avoid any contact should both sites be occupied. There is a 2-mile loop hiking trail on the property that traverses a variety of habitats which are home to many animals and birds. The trail is well maintained and mowed. The terrain is flat to gentle slopes. The 1/2-mile Narnia Loop trail weaves through a young spruce forest like a maze. It is so cool, literally, even on the hottest days. The Allegheny River is about 10 miles away, near Tidioute, PA, and has excellent paddling and fishing. Titusville, PA is about 15 miles away and is home to Oil Creek State Park which has great trout fishing, an excellent paved bike/hike trail, and Drake Well Museum site of the first oil well ever drilled. Finally, you will be on the doorstep to the Allegheny National Forest with all the outdoor recreation it has to offer. We hope you enjoy the peace and quiet of nature on our property as much as we have. Forest camping in Chautauqua Lake guide

Overview

Set in western New York and surrounded by several state forests, Chautauqua Lake stretches for 17 miles. A popular lake getaway in the summer, visitors flock here to go swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating. Several lakeside parks and charming towns can be found around the lake, including “home of comedy” Jamestown, Chautauqua, Mayville, and Bemus Point. Also nearby is Lake Erie, one of the great lakes. In winter, ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling are popular, along with downhill skiing in nearby ski resorts.

Where to go

South Shore

Located near the southeast end of the lake, Jamestown is home to a lively performing arts scene, along with the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum, the National Comedy Center, and Audubon Nature Center. You can camp along the lakeshore and find options for tents and large RVs with full hookups and cabins, plus plenty of amenities.

West Shore

The town of Chautauqua is the home of the Chautauqua Institution, a renowned cultural and performing arts venue. Tucked away in a secluded wooded area just south of the town is Camp Prendergast, which offers tent sites and RV sites with full hookups and amenities like a swimming pool.

East Shore

At the town of Bemus Point, Long Point State Park juts out into the lake and offers a modern boat launch, fishing dock, pavilions, and several trails. Just north, one of the oldest amusement parks in the country can be found at Midway State Park. The only bridge across the lake can also be found here, connecting to Stow on the western shore of the lake.

North Shore

The county seat of Mayville can be found at the northern end of the lake. Continue north and you’ll hit Lake Erie, with plenty of options for enjoying the water, and more than 20 wineries. Lake Erie State Park offers easy lake access and a campground on a bluff overlooking the lake, and more than 100 tent and RV campsites and cabins. Further south along the shore, Evangola State Park is another option, while several private campgrounds sit right along the shores of Lake Erie.
