Just outside the quaint town of Austin sits a vivid reminder of one of Pennsylvania's worst disasters – the Austin Flood. In 1909, the dam was constructed on Freeman Run to power the Bayless Papermill downstream. Many wondered if the dam was safe. On September 30, 1911, Austin found out. Poor construction, coupled with torrential rain, resulted in the dam's collapse. Nearly 400 million gallons of water were released, destroying everything for 8 miles. At least 78 people perished in the tragedy. It was the second worst flood disaster in Pennsylvania's history and sixth worst dam failure in U.S. history. The tragedy sparked new legislation to improve dam safety, and the Austin Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This 140-acre property is an old farmstead last farmed in the 1950's. It lies in the Allegheny Plateau region of NW Pennsylvania and is mostly hardwood forest today. It is surrounded by thousands of acres of private forestland and is very secluded. Our goal is to provide a private and secluded yet accessible camping experience where you will see more deer than people. AANR/TNS friendly. There is excellent Verizon and T-Mobile service. The skies are dark at night and the sounds of nature will surround you. Campsite 1 is near where the farmhouse and barn once stood. The site is shaded by large, old maples that once shaded the farmhouse. Old fields surround the farmstead, but the woods are a short walk away.  It is the most popular campsite with an outhouse, fire ring and picnic table available. Campsite 2 is on the other side of the property. There is a fire ring but no picnic table.  Both sites easily accommodate anything from tents to RV's. Each site has a separate, gated, gravel road access. These are the only 2 campsites on the property and they are far enough apart (1/4 mile) to avoid any contact should both sites be occupied. There is a 2-mile loop hiking trail on the property that traverses a variety of habitats which are home to many animals and birds. The trail is well maintained and mowed. The terrain is flat to gentle slopes. The 1/2-mile Narnia Loop trail weaves through a young spruce forest like a maze. It is so cool, literally, even on the hottest days. The Allegheny River is about 10 miles away, near Tidioute, PA, and has excellent paddling and fishing. Titusville, PA is about 15 miles away and is home to Oil Creek State Park which has great trout fishing, an excellent paved bike/hike trail, and Drake Well Museum site of the first oil well ever drilled. Finally, you will be on the doorstep to the Allegheny National Forest with all the outdoor recreation it has to offer. This stand-alone secluded campsite sits in the woods above an extremely unique stretch of French Creek (2022 PA River of the Year!) Facing northwest over the valley, it offers stunning sunset views. The Union City Dam floods the valley during wet periods making a beautiful (though temporary) lakefront campsite before slowly draining away. 100s of acres of protected land create a wildlife haven. Centrally located between 2 small towns with many local attractions. Union City Dam: Situated on the high-side of the Union City Dam, a dry-bed flood control dam. During snowmelt or rainy spells, the dam fills and floods the entire valley. During dry spells, French Creek appears as any other creek. At full flood, it becomes a breathtaking lake front campsite. Unfortunately, these natural events only occur a few weeks out of the year and are fairly unpredictable, but provide a truly spectacular setting (compare the high-water vs low-water views in the photos). Wildlife: At the end of a dead-end dirt road, adjacent to 100's of acres of federal protected land, and within sight of a number of agriculture fields, there is an abundance of wildlife. For over 20 years, an active eagle’s nest has been located 1 mile north providing amazing opportunities to see either adult or juvenile eagles flying over French Creek hunting for fish. Deer can be seen early morning and late evening in the fields, and frequently crossing the valley. All types of waterfowl flock the reservoir lake when flooded. I've personally witnessed up to 1000 geese and 100’s of wild swans at once. Local Attractions: The small towns of Union City and Waterford have gas stations, grocery stores, great local dining options, and more. The Union City Dam, less than 1.5 miles down the road, provides walking, biking, scenic driving, and picnic opportunities. 40-min drive to Presque Isle State Park, one of the only free state parks left in the US. 15-min drive to Port Farms a farm-themed amusement park for the kids and Poverty Knob Brewery for the adults. DISCLAIMER: There is an active gravel pit to the North of the campsite. During weekdays from about 7 AM-5 PM, you will likely hear and possibly see some activity from the gravel pit. Security cameras may be in use at the driveway entrance.

Founded in 1955 as a campground, amusement park and pay to fish lake, lake lucy has a rich history of having families spending time together. After the death of lake lucys founder Raymond Mealy in 2007 the amusements and train were all removed as well as the zoo. The Steinman family purchased the property in 2017 and began remodeling the pavilion and putting in water and sewer lines to be able to use the campground and pavilion again. It has been a place for the Steinman and Mealy families and friends to enjoy for the last few years and we felt it was time to once again welcome the public to enjoy our property! We currently have 11 sites with full hookups (water, sewer, electric(50/30/20amp). The campground water will be turned off November 10th due to freezing temperatures. We are within a few miles of a dollar store if any supplies are needed, a gas station is at the end of the road and we are only a few minutes from cook forest as well as the tionesta reservoir. Water is available on site for campers and campers can use the bath house. In the bath house there is 1 full bathroom with a shower and the other bathroom is just a half bath. Quiet and peaceful, come relax and enjoy time with your family at lake Lucy!   we are also conveniently located close to the bike trail near clarion as well as the bike trails in cook forest and oil creek state park. Great place to camp, it was out in the wilderness but at the same time close to everything. Nice large site with a water view. The only thing I wish was the electric was a little bit more heavy duty; but we had no problems. Overall great trip and I’d definitely come back and recommend to anyone looking for something different than a resort.

My pup and I loved our overnight stay. The property is beautiful and quiet. We woke in the morning to a herd of deer walking through camp. Having electric available was a big bonus. We were car camping and being able to have a car heater to keep us cozy was perfect on a 30 degree night. My pup loved being able to be off leash.

This site is perfect! The road is a bit rough towards then end, but it’s a short distance. Do go to the left as Josh recommends! We went right without our camper to see and don’t, just don’t. The site is well kept and private and very big. Perfect to let our dog, Sully, roam free the whole time. It was his first camping trip. A+ for Sully. Already thinking about coming back next year. Thank you for the nice relaxing time!

This is an amazing campsite. Very well thought out in design and very private. Out of my 6 days on the road this was my best night. Tons of firewood, plenty of space for large groups, a great patio with seating boulders and ample space for parking. Highly recommend. Oh, super nice guy as well!

Weekend Trip to Clear Creek Cook Forest Campsite

We absolutely love this campsite! This is not the first time we've been here, and certainly won't be the last! This site is absolutely perfect for our family and dog! It is private, quiet, beautiful and clean! Sitting at the campfire and staring into the woods is life-giving. Our kids and dog can run around without any worry. The electric and water hook ups are so nice to have as well! There are several picnic tables to use and an awesome fire ring. Pulling in and out are super easy because of the nicely graveled area! Don't let the road coming in discourage you...this is no indication of what you'll experience once you're there! We thank Josh and his family for allowing us to use the site again to end our 2025 camping season (we began with them too!) We will certainly be back in 2026!

2 nights at Austin Dam Memorial Park

Great spot! Directions that were sent were perfect. Sites were clearly marked, which was really appreciated since we pulled in at night in the rain. Firewood was delivered to our site and under a tarp (again, super appreciated) We had a great stay. Secluded, we didn’t have to speak to anyone the whole 2 days we were there. Stars were beautiful at night. Also, had decent cell service, which I was surprised by. No frills, just nature.

Did some drive-up tent camping here with some friends in October and had a great time! We had site 8 which was nice and secluded with a wonderful view of the autumn colors. Easy access to hikes to the old paper mill and Austin Dam right from our campsite. Porta-potty was right nearby and sparkly clean. And we had full cell service too (T-Mobile).

This is probably my 5th or 6th stay here and our experience has and still is amazing! Alvie was great and very helpful. He told us about the events going on at the park and what to watch out for in terms of wildlife and also gave us great suggestions on where to hike. Camp site was very clean and well maintained. My group and I would definitely be returning again in the near future!

The property was beautiful. However the road in was a little crazy. It was close to attractions like clear creek park, bear town rocks and the farmers inn and petting zoo. The cell service was in and out so be prepared for that. All and all it was a pretty good stay.

Weekend Trip to Clarion Heights

Ed upgraded me to the pavilion site for free, as it was available and it was raining, with more expected over the weekend. It was such a cozy spot, and I loved the lights and having a dry place to keep all my gear! The loft was a cool bonus! Ed and his dad were both friendly and super accommodating. I purchased the firewood bundle, and it was more than I needed for two nights. They even gave me some fire starter and found a space heater that I could use in my tent if I got too cold. I saw deer out in the field in the evening, and the crickets singing was peaceful. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the constant droning background noise which I think was from the papermill down in town. It kind of made for a white noise at night, just louder than I liked. But the hosts have a good piece of land up there on the hill. They had a map of the property. There are trails that I didn't even have time to explore because I was out visiting parks for much of the day. This campground was a great base from which to visit Kinzua Bridge, about a half hour away. They have a variety of campers to stay in also. It was a fun fall getaway, and the hosts were a pleasure!
