While exploring Helena, we recommend the Walking Mall and the lower end of Last Chance Gulch for shopping and dining. You can also do a self guided tour of the Capitol building and then ride the tour train through Helena to get a quick history lesson. If you want to do something outside, we suggest Houser Lake at Lakeside with a bar and grill, a beach, fire pit, volley ball, etc. There is also guided boat rides at Gates of the Mountains on Holter Lake (about 20 miles towards Great Falls). If you are looking to go hiking, Mount Helena is a nice hike, but maybe a bit much for small kiddos, unless you have a backpack. If you'd like additional suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Hope you enjoy your stay!

The Monarch Cabin sits at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet on the west side of Elkhorn Peak. It is surrounded by more than 300,000 acres of public land with 80,000 acres of that being designated as a roadless area. The nearest human inhabitance is in the Historic Town of Elkhorn situated a bit more than 3 miles to the south and a drop of about 2,000 feet of elevation.
During the Summer, enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and trail running on maintained and unmaintained trails. Climb peaks with incredible views and fish in mountain lakes. Spring time provides opportunity to experience the splendor of the wild flower season. There are so many flowers that the whole area is alive with the aroma and multitude of colors. If you are lucky, you may see new born wildlife such as deer, elk, mountain goats, fox, moose and many others.
Winter time lends to incredible back country skiing, split boarding, and snowshoeing. The sunsets are typically spectacular while enjoying the views and solitude. Book for a time of full moon and with a clear sky a moonlight ski or walk is amazing.
From the West there is the Muskrat/Tizer Lakes trail which is a maintained, designated hiking/biking trail. To the south is an unmaintained, extremely rough forest service road leading to the cabin. To the east there is a trail to the top of Elkhorn Peak and to Crow Peak, the two highest peaks in the Elkhorn mountains. To the north there are trails leading to most anywhere in the Elkhorn Mountains. Tizer lakes are only about 3 miles away on an easy maintained trail. From there there are too many destinations to name. Hiking and biking is limited only by one's own ambition and skills. The Elkhorn endurance run is a well known event that has it's longer race route run right through the property.
At the end of a hard day of adventure, relax in the wood fired sauna and enjoy the amazing sunsets. If you are lucky, you might even hear elk bugling in the valley below (September/October).
Most people access the cabin by hiking, biking, snowshoes or ski's. If one choose to drive, a 4 WD truck would be a must and would still be difficult. Areas above the cabin are for non-motorized use only.

Wade the Dearborn in the back yard of this 3-bedroom house (fourth bedroom/living room or guide cabin next door ($150/stay to open) on 10 acres of the former Gary Cooper Ranch. Don’t be surprised to see deer, geese and ducks in the window nudging their way near the deck, especially at the spring waterfall that cascades down the slope. if you are especially quiet and observant, the hundreds of acres of park and ranch across the river also have mountain goats, bears, antelope and even the mountain lion.

The public put-in is an 11 hour trip; private access to two shorter put-ins make this a recommended site for many Montana guides. Launch from the back yard and float one half mile down the Dearborn River to the Missouri River or from anywhere on the Dearborn to your own private fishing hole among some of nature’s oldest rock outcroppings.
Only few miles from the Missouri Inn over the bridge where the Untouchables was filmed, enjoy the canyon or visit the Lewis and Clark’s Tower Rock and surrounding Park. From this base, see the spectacular Glacier Park or the continent’s largest dinosaur digs to the northwest, float the Lewis and Clark Trail by pontoon boat and lunch at the island where one of the nation's most famous fires occurred, or travel south to Yellowstone National Park or Jackson Hole, each an easy day’s visit.

While exploring Helena, we recommend the Walking Mall and the lower end of Last Chance Gulch for shopping and dining. You can also do a self guided tour of the Capitol building and then ride the tour train through Helena to get a quick history lesson. If you want to do something outside, we suggest Houser Lake at Lakeside with a bar and grill, a beach, fire pit, volley ball, etc. There is also guided boat rides at Gates of the Mountains on Holter Lake (about 20 miles towards Great Falls). If you are looking to go hiking, Mount Helena is a nice hike, but maybe a bit much for small kiddos, unless you have a backpack. If you'd like additional suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out. Hope you enjoy your stay!

The Monarch Cabin sits at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet on the west side of Elkhorn Peak. It is surrounded by more than 300,000 acres of public land with 80,000 acres of that being designated as a roadless area. The nearest human inhabitance is in the Historic Town of Elkhorn situated a bit more than 3 miles to the south and a drop of about 2,000 feet of elevation.
During the Summer, enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and trail running on maintained and unmaintained trails. Climb peaks with incredible views and fish in mountain lakes. Spring time provides opportunity to experience the splendor of the wild flower season. There are so many flowers that the whole area is alive with the aroma and multitude of colors. If you are lucky, you may see new born wildlife such as deer, elk, mountain goats, fox, moose and many others.
Winter time lends to incredible back country skiing, split boarding, and snowshoeing. The sunsets are typically spectacular while enjoying the views and solitude. Book for a time of full moon and with a clear sky a moonlight ski or walk is amazing.
From the West there is the Muskrat/Tizer Lakes trail which is a maintained, designated hiking/biking trail. To the south is an unmaintained, extremely rough forest service road leading to the cabin. To the east there is a trail to the top of Elkhorn Peak and to Crow Peak, the two highest peaks in the Elkhorn mountains. To the north there are trails leading to most anywhere in the Elkhorn Mountains. Tizer lakes are only about 3 miles away on an easy maintained trail. From there there are too many destinations to name. Hiking and biking is limited only by one's own ambition and skills. The Elkhorn endurance run is a well known event that has it's longer race route run right through the property.
At the end of a hard day of adventure, relax in the wood fired sauna and enjoy the amazing sunsets. If you are lucky, you might even hear elk bugling in the valley below (September/October).
Most people access the cabin by hiking, biking, snowshoes or ski's. If one choose to drive, a 4 WD truck would be a must and would still be difficult. Areas above the cabin are for non-motorized use only.

Wade the Dearborn in the back yard of this 3-bedroom house (fourth bedroom/living room or guide cabin next door ($150/stay to open) on 10 acres of the former Gary Cooper Ranch. Don’t be surprised to see deer, geese and ducks in the window nudging their way near the deck, especially at the spring waterfall that cascades down the slope. if you are especially quiet and observant, the hundreds of acres of park and ranch across the river also have mountain goats, bears, antelope and even the mountain lion.
Help yourself to the library, watch satellite television or DVD movies, or read from the house’s library.
The public put-in is an 11 hour trip; private access to two shorter put-ins make this a recommended site for many Montana guides. Launch from the back yard and float one half mile down the Dearborn River to the Missouri River or from anywhere on the Dearborn to your own private fishing hole among some of nature’s oldest rock outcroppings.
Only few miles from the Missouri Inn over the bridge where the Untouchables was filmed, enjoy the canyon or visit the Lewis and Clark’s Tower Rock and surrounding Park. From this base, see the spectacular Glacier Park or the continent’s largest dinosaur digs to the northwest, float the Lewis and Clark Trail by pontoon boat and lunch at the island where one of the nation's most famous fires occurred, or travel south to Yellowstone National Park or Jackson Hole, each an easy day’s visit.
Bring your dogs to the kennel behind the house, hang on the deck with river and tremendous rock views, play pool or light the outside fire pit for a campfire. Our stay at Justin’s place was great! It’s the perfect place to escape from the busyness of everyday life and enjoy the more simple moments we can often overlook. The yurt is cozy and clean and the facilities are pretty cute too!

We really enjoyed our time on this property. It is a true taste of off grid living. It is not an in town rental, but instead your experience will be far from town with the comforts you still enjoy. Elk will keep you company when you wake up in the morning. The bathroom has a unique experience that just has to be seen to understand that is very enjoyable. The host provides a very hospitable experience. I would highly recommend and also recommend enjoying all the back roads that are accessible from this cabin.

1 night at The DET Place Hideaway
McKenzie was great. She was very quick to reply to questions and super accommodating. Our check in time changed a couple of times d/t unforeseen delays getting to Montana - but she was really easy to work with and understanding.
The 5th wheel was great. Lots of space and well kept. Bedrooms were a nice surprise (bigger than appeared in the pics). Shower was hot and plenty large enough for me (6 ft and 245lbs) to clean up. Water and heat were included and welcome.
The view of the mountains out of the camper door were a pleasant way to wake up and her property was secluded enough and well kept. Easy instructions and only about an hour north of Bozeman.
Would def stay with her again if we made it back up this way.

The tent was amazing! It was the perfect mix of wilderness and comfort. I had my 4 yr old daughter and we had a blast. Endless rocks and boulders to climb on and plenty of privacy. We heard an elk bugling on the second the morning as well, creating quite the experience.
We also took a quick drive to the Hardware Cafe just a few miles down the road for some comfort food.
We will definitely be staying again next year!

1 night at 4D Ranch
We had a late arrival, and an early morning, but after we settled in, this was such a dreamy stay! It was an adventure to get there in the dark, and we were careful on the rocky road up to the spot. Our host recommends a higher clearance, which is necessary.
The sky is so big up there! Wow! The stars!!! The tipi was very cozy, and the bed was super comfy. ... And the morning - the coyotes yipping in the distance, a screech owl, the expansive view of the mountains in every direction, sunset colours with the tipi in the foreground... it was truly a one of kind experience.
Our only regrets is not having more time relax and enjoy, or use all the amenities, like the outdoor shower (it has hot water!).
Our host was so wonderfully accommodating as we scrambled to make arrangements. Thank you for everything! And for sharing this beautiful chunk of Montana with us.
(And ps. We loved Anaconda too... such a charmer of a town!)

Weekend Trip to The Homestead
We wanted to go somewhere, but had to be super close to home. Enter an Elkhorn Mountain adventure, just 20 minutes from our door in Helena, down the highway to Clancy to the Homestead Camp.
We love camping ⛺️ and yet I didn’t feel up to all of the work required. And I’m really very extremely tired and wanted to sleep well.
I found this gorgeous getaway on Hip-camp and with the hard work done, all I had to do was eat, drink, read, and sleep. And boy, did I sleep! Multiple times a day even!
We watched clouds rolls by until the sky darkened and it was the stars’ turn. ✨ We fell asleep to rain drops kissing the canvas and woke to the rattle of thunder of deep in the mountains. ⛰️

Weekend Trip to The DET Place Hideaway
When I pulled up to Mackenzie‘s RV, I was a little dismayed to see it parked next to the house but then we met Mackenzie and changed our minds. She was lovely and the RV was so nice and comfortable. My kids loved it. We had a bonfire and walked around and saw the horses. It was a perfect place to stay. We spent time at Canyon ferry the Madison River. This spot OSS really a gem!

What a beautiful peaceful place. We felt like we were in the middle of no where. If you are an experienced camper with a vehicle that can handle the roads of an out of the way place, this is an amazing spot. Denise was super helpful and supportive to our stay.

Such a great place, that we ended up extending our stay 4 more days! Host is very helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Great communication. Plenty of space for me and my 3 kiddos. And they loved getting to see the animals (horses, cows, deer and a couple cats). Will definitely be back again! 5 stars highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this campsite! It really couldn't be a more perfect set-up with all necessities, hiking trails near campsites, private yet easy to access and a short drive to Helena, plus a great spot to stay with pets! Such a beautiful location & the sunsets in the evening are 5 star rating, if you're looking for a place to relax and unwind it doesn't get any better than this. I would definitely stay again and I would recommend Jamie's campsite to anyone looking a place to stay in the area.

We loved our time at Pamela’s property. The cabin was quaint and comfortable. The property provided for some neat activities for my kids. They loved the music room and just getting to hang out. We only needed one night for a baseball tournament in Helena but would definitely want to go back again and have more time around the fire.

We loved our stay at the Casey tent! Super cute and unique stay. The land it is on is beautiful and it is not far from Helena which was nice. We stayed one night but wish it was a couple more. I will say, don’t take the warning for the two track road lightly. Our minivan didn’t make it the whole one mile to the tent (we didn’t know what to expect for the drive on the property)
