Our yurt sits on the edge of a wild woods on the banks of the Cloquet River overlooking a meadow that is an active forest restoration project currently in process. From your door, you can access a loop of trails that wind through the woods, to the river and back to the yurt.
Get back to basics. There is no electricity or running water in the yurt. Camp lanterns and solar lights are provided as is refillable fresh water and a propane camp stove/oven with pots/pans/utensils. The yurt is heated solely by a wood stove and there is plenty of firewood a short distance away with a sled or wagon to use for hauling. A campfire pit is just outside the yurt with a hanging grill and grilling tools. A detached outhouse is a short walk from the yurt and is for your use alone when you're here. In the winter, a Luggable Loo is available to bring to the yurt to eliminate trips at night in the cold to the outhouse. The yurt contains a queen bed with linens and a single camp cot available on request.
Dogs are welcome in the yurt! We charge a $25 pet fee per reservation. If you'd like to bring a dog or dogs (limit 2), please add the Pet Fee which is listed as an extra during the booking process.
In the warm months, the river is great for swimming and fishing.

In the winter, two pairs of snowshoes are included for quiet walks through the woods.

Take your canine pal with you! Quiet hours: dusk to 7am. Also consider your dog's inclination for barking. We keep the peace and quiet of all of our guests in mind.

We are so blessed to live in this little piece of serenity just inside the city limits of Duluth.
Our home was once an abandoned house that sat for years until a friend mentioned to us that it might be going up for sale. We loved the location and rolled up our sleeves. Twenty years later we still marvel at the beauty around us and can hardly believe that we LIVE here!
Just down the road is a trout stream and beyond that was a popular farm that attracted many folks to this neighborhood for hay rides and sleigh rides. The farm has since retired its horses and closed its doors to make room for new homes, but memories live on in the beauty of the open fields. I often imagine the sound of horses and sleigh bells and people singing carols and then warming up around a toasty fire sipping hot cocoa. Some of those memories live on right here at Balsam Ridge (minus the horses). Over the years many groups of folks have enjoyed a sense of community in these back woods no matter the season. Campfires, kids catching frogs, neighborhood campouts, snow picnics, hair-raising toboggan runs, family campouts, spiritual silent retreats, a take-your-breath-away giant swing, and some tales too daring to mention are all part of the fun.
This is why we do what we do. We've been given much, and love to give back. It just wouldn't seem right to keep all this good to ourselves.

The Camp on Hamlet Hill (closed for 2026) is to the north of our home, on a remote flat hill at the top of our property, on a hill over Cedar brook. with 300-acre, (private) Hamlet Lake in front, and the wide portion of the 20-mile Cedar brook in the back. We are a large "homesteading" family, with chickens, ducks, and a garden. The campsite is a private 1/2 acre clearing, surrounded by woods with a firepit, grill, cooking utensils, and an outhouse. (Tents are available for a small additional cost). There is an outdoor water pump below the hill, near which guests can view our fenced-in animals. Guests can also access the waterfront and beach in front, with the use of the swim raft, lily pad, fishing dock, canoe, kayak, and paddle boards included. At nearly 100 feet deep, Hamlet lake also boasts excellent fishing. Our home is located 6 miles from Crosby, with the world-class Cuyuna Lakes 50-mile mountain bike trail system. Crosby is a growing tourist town with many new and unique restaurants, outdoor adventures, and shopping opportunities. The paved bike trail begins 3.5 north of us. Milacs lake is 10 miles to the south.

Linda and Chris have such a magical little spot. My husband and I were here 3 years ago and this time we brought the whole family. It's that perfect mix of cozy, peaceful, and just a little bit whimsical. The tent was comfortable and inviting, with fairy lights, thoughtful little details, and a comfy bed. It had everything that made it feel special without losing the fun of being outdoors.
The setting was beautiful! Close to town, yet tucked in the woods with a pond, ducks, a groundhog sighting, and such a calm, peaceful vibe. The firepit was perfect for family time, and the site felt semi-private while still being easy and welcoming. Chris and Linda were superb hosts; friendly, kind, and clearly thoughtful about making the space feel special.
The kids were exploring, adults were actually relaxing, and when it was time to leave the girls were already asking, “Okay, when are we coming back?” Definitely a sweet, magical spot for a family trip.

I spent the best 2 nights at Gabeshiwin and looking forward to going back. This review is mostly going to be about the hosts. Kevin and Donna are amazing. I had booked a tipi and when the trip was approaching rain was in the forecast so they made last minute arrangements to keep me dry. Kevin was fast end efficient with communication and he couldn't have done more to accommodate my needs. The grounds are beautiful and so well maintained. If you take the time to look around you will find details that make your stay even more special. When the skies cleared I was able to share a bon fire with the Kevin and Donna which was the cherry on the top of my sundae for my stay!

Linda’s spot was amazing. So friendly and had everything we needed. Very comfortable and made for a great nights sleep. There were owls, saw some deer and were greeted by peacefulness. Would stay again for sure!!

5 stars! A special place indeed.
Linda and Chris have created something genuinely special at The Stuga. From the moment we arrived it was clear that every detail had been thought through — absolutely perfect! Spotlessly clean, beautifully maintained, and stocked with everything you could possibly need before you knew you needed it including binoculars.
But the real magic happened outside. Falling asleep to singing frogs, waking to an owl calling in the early morning quiet, and wandering paths lit by the most enchanting trail lights I've ever seen — it felt like the property had its own rhythm and we were lucky enough to slip into it for a few days.
The other guests were warm and easy — the kind of people a place like this seems to attract.
We will absolutely be back. Places this thoughtfully run and this quietly beautiful don't come along often. If you're considering it, stop considering and just go.

2 nights at Balsam Ridge Retreat
We absolutely love this place. And, we love Linda and Chris. This is our second time to visit Duluth. We stayed here last time, and didn't have to give a second thought to where we would stay when we returned this time. It's a place set apart; you're fully immersed in nature and peace. They've thoughtfully set up contemplative gathering spots that feel whimsical and cozy.

Weekend Trip to Gabeshiwin Tipi Village
The tipi’s and surrounding grounds were clean and manicured. Bugs were no existent inside and outside. Deer were always walking around the grounds. The tipi canvas were hand painted with natures animals. Ample fire wood, toilet and water were located in close proximity. We would highly recommend this non electric setting.

The entire area is a wonderful site to behold. The hosts are over the top amazing. The setting is tranquil, peaceful and quaint. They have thought about the decorating of each site, the Roost was a perfect hen house to sleep in!
I will be back over and over for a yearly reset.

This was the perfect quiet getaway cabin for our family. Nice and secluded cabin with access to the water! Fantastic cozy backyard area with firepit. The cabin itself worked great for us; open concept allowed for more family interaction, and then also able to shut the door and allow the early risers to make coffee and take showers while the teenagers get to sleep in a bit and not be disturbed.
The cabin was a great blend of authentic rustic “cabin feel” along with some luxuries (A/C if needed, nice new addition with nice shower, laundry, etc…). Take the time to try the spring water down the road! The loons provided great company. Our golden retriever enjoyed the layout as well. It worked real well for having a dog. Great rental!

We spent 5 days at this beautiful cabin. It was just right for two of us and our 2 dogs. Very comfortable. It has a beautiful trail to the river with a nice place to sit and enjoy the views. Our grandson enjoyed swimming and looking for shells. Kayaking was amazing. Our children had the other 3 tent/camper sites. It was the perfect size for a wonderful family camping trip. The bathroom clean and beautiful. The outdoor kitchen fit our needs perfectly. The outdoor shower was great!! Very peaceful and quiet.

Danny's Tent was such a treat! It was so peaceful & relaxing! This was my 3rd stay at Balsam Ridge Retreat and each site had certain things that made them stand out for me. With Danny's tent, it was definitely the setting & visual appeal. Granted it's a little farther to walk to bring all your food and trash to to your vehicle after cooking every night, but staying at this site is so worth it! My favorite part was waking up in the morning (I wake up around 6am) and sitting on the deck just outside the tent with my coffee and watching & listening to the hummingbirds, birds & dragonflies fly around as the sun rises above the trees just beyond the pond. It's such a surreal moment to take in! I'm already counting down the days until I get to go back!

Weekend Trip to Medicine Creek Farm
Spent a great night under a clear sky full of stars! The camper was warm, cozy and spotless. The site was perfectly outfitted with a fire ring, picnic table and nearby outhouse. Great base camp for outdoor adventures nearby. Very relaxing. Well worth the value. Would love to stay longer.

Glamping at the Stuga @Balsam Ridge was wonderful! The property was well maintained with lots of amazing special touches - the string lights, all the beautiful community spaces, and our little cabin the Stuga. Our favorite was the two swings the Dreamer and the Screamer! To top it off the hosts are great people - my daughter and I really enjoyed meeting them and hearing a little history about Balsam Ridge. Thank you for sharing your space it made for a wonderful weekend away!

An excellent secluded glamping experience that our dogs loved as much as us. The cabin was very well maintained and has access to a clean bathroom/shower and a very easy to use kitchen area. A great fire pit for family fun and lots of space to kids and pets to play. We highly recommend it to anyone.

Absolutely incredible property! Such a privilege to get to stay at Bob’s place. The cabin and setting are truly heavenly. We saw one boat the entire week. Beavers, owls, herons, muskrats, birds of many species. It is so well set up for outdoor cooking & eating. The beach and kayaks made the lake feel so accessible and enjoyable. The condition of the cabin is so wonderfully preserved and the new bathroom is such a perk. Can’t wait to go back!
