We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife. We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails. If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns. Welcome ; Located in southeast Minnesota's Driftless region of hills, valleys, fields and forests, we are a grass based working dairy farm with over 100 acres of woodland, including an extensive trail system and campsites in our wooded acres. What makes this woodland special is it's quiet, secluded setting and over 6 miles of hiking / skiing trails. Our farmstead sits three quarter of a mile off the paved county highway on our well maintained gravel driveway. Each of our campsites are secluded from the others with their own sawdust compost toilets, picnic tables, fireplaces, and firewood. Two of our sites require 4WD with a minimum of 6 inches ground clearance to access, and two are accessible with 2WD. If you do not have 4WD we can help transport your gear while you enjoy the walk in. There are plenty of woodland birds, deer, turkeys, raccoons and squirrels sharing the woods with you. At night it is common for owls to visit the campsite area to say hello, and coyotes talking in the distance. The winding trails through 100 acres of woodland offer a variety of woodland habitats, from Old growth Maple to mixed hardwood, to dense brush, to the edges of open pastureland. Bring your fat bike or mountain bike for an enjoyable ride. For winter users there is a mix of easy, moderate, and challenging winter cross country skiing or snowshoeing / hiking on the property. However the Rock Bottom Cabin is our only heated and insulated site and is available for winter booking. Winter access is walk in only with snow on the ground or in the forecast. We can help transport gear. This property is part of a working pasture-based dairy farm and guided tours of the dairy and cattle are available when scheduling allows. The famous 'Driftless Books' is also found in Viroqua, along with live music on Court Street every other Saturday. Music in the Parks also offers live music in the area on Wednesdays throughout the summer. We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin. This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. The area is unique in that the land here was never flattened by the ice that came through most of the Midwest during the last glacial period/ice age. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

Quiet private cabin a great place to get away from it all. Located in the Driftless hills of Readstown, Wi. Surrounded by woods & Hay Field. AWD car is recommended for our Hill Road leading to our PRIVATE cabin. Complete with a compost toilet & electric. Water to enjoy a Shower powered by an Electric Water Heater. Our cabin has an outdoor sink, as seen in pictures. NO drinking water Provided. Our water is not Potable. Please bring your drinking water. DVD player only This is definitely more like “Glamping” than “Camping”! So much to do surrounding the cabin. Head over to Crazy Franks Flea market or take a short 10 minute drive to a bigger city Viroqua and enjoy their farmers market & cute boutiques. Near fly fishing, reeds creek & the Kickapoo. Bike the Kickapoo Valley Reserve one of our favorite activities! Lots of activities to do in the Driftless and just a short drive from the cabin. Hike the the Kickapoo valley Reserve, take a drive over to Wildcat State Park, check out the Winery’s, brewery, Amish stores & Sunrise Apple Orchard near by or simply take in the sounds of nature surrounding you. Bring your yard games & roasting sticks.

Weekend Trip to Lanesboro Acres

Very peaceful and scenic spot! Bed had a super comfy memory foam mattress, you just need to bring your own pillow. Location is close to both Mystery Cave and Niagara Cave as well as Amish towns and a charming downtown Lanesboro is only 10 mins away. Good hiking and biking trails in the area as well. The perfect rural getaway overall. Super friendly hosts!

Weekend Trip to Frickson Family Farms, LLC.

The views of the farm from the cabin were absolutely lovely! Also appreciate it being dog-friendly spot…my herding mix enjoyed being on-the-clock watching the cows!

Early summer 2023 beautiful day at your camper with private deck, firepit, cave and waterfall. (Sometimes a dog or cat will visit you, so make sure your pet is always on a leash)

4 nights at Hideaway Camper by the Cave 2.0

My wife and I had an amazing four night stay. Very relaxing, everything was set up beautifully for us, and it was located perfectly for us. We were curious about staying in a camper - size, comfort, etc...but both realized we could do it easily. Our dog loved seeing the horses, turkeys, and hanging in the stream too.

Weekend Trip to Gilles Family Dairy & Woodland

My husband and I love coming here with our dogs!! The Rock Bottom Cabin is quiet and secluded which is so relaxing. We are able to have our dogs off leash to play and run around at the site without worrying too much about other campers wandering in. The site itself is beautiful and very well upkept and organized. The trails are well maintained and take you up and down for quite the hike. Would definitly recommend!!

Such a terrific—and unique experience—camping at the Gilles Farm. Mike and Joan were extremely welcoming and attentive, making sure we were comfortable in this bucolic setting. Excellent hiking trails and generously sized sites make this an ideal retreat. Plus, we stayed in a houseboat (on land)!

2 nights at Gossman Goat Ranch

We had a family of 7, kids age range 2-14. Stayed in beautiful off grid cabin, kids loved taking turns in the loft. Very private and far removed from the family house. Beautiful trails and view of corn fields. Clean, nice outhouse setup. We didn't have mosquitoes, which i was surprised by. They allow you to go in the animal pen as you please and we all enjoyed the goats and chicks following behind their mamas...and we wanted to take the sweet calf home with us. This is a fantastic hip camp experience. We stayed just two nights but there are plenty of things to do in the area to extend the stay.

We had a fantastic weekend at the Big Sky Bell Tent. The location offered great privacy and stunning views of the bluffs and prairie. The tent was larger and more comfortable than expected, and included a table, 4 chairs and some bedside tables (with fans). Our host was helpful with directions and local insight. Highly recommended!

We had an awesome stay at two Aefintyr bell tents (Carya and Betulah)! The site was clean, well-prepared, and in a fantastic location for exploring the area. Chelsi was a super responsive host and understanding when we ran into a minor issue with a broken zipper on the tent. Just a heads-up for future campers: be ready for a solid hike up the hill to get to the site! It is just as described, just over a quarter mile to gain 230' in elevation 💪 Beautiful setup overall—would definitely recommend.

Weekend Trip to Aefintyr

Once you make it up the hill it’s a beautiful and well thought out campground with nice private campsites. We loved the stand up wooden cubby’s to put our stuff in to keep away from critters. We had a table and chairs to sit at. But we loved that the there was a community area with gas grill and platform to make our food, patio furniture to hang out, eat. The composting toilets were very nice and smelled good inside! Also loved that there is water and soap to wash hands too! Highly recommend this place! Thanks for sharing!

2 nights at Lanesboro Acres

This spot was a little slice of heaven. The tent was cozy and well-maintained. The views from the campsite were stunning. We enjoyed the wildflower prairie, the many birds and butterflies, and the spectacular sunsets. Neil was friendly and commutative and provided a tube and detailed instructions for a lovely float down the Root River. 10/10 would recommend.

Weekend Trip to Heart of the Driftless

We absolutely loved the little oasis here in the driftless! It was a perfect quiet getaway from the city. We enjoyed the wildlife - butterflies, bees, deer, birds and the fireflies were so plentiful and beautiful. The cabin was equipped with everything you need for the weekend. Clean and perfectly set up! We'd love to come back to see it in the fall!

This was a wonderful place to stay! Accomodations were cozy and clean. Beautiful setting on a working farm. At night I could see LOTS of stars and even the Milky Way. I only wish I had more time there to take advantage of the covered porch and firepit. It was an easy drive into La Crosse to see a show. I plan to return in the future...

Weekend Trip to Lanesboro Acres

My family and I had a lovely time camping on Neil’s land. We brought our two small kids and our two dogs and we everyone had the best weekend! If you like nature, privacy and quiet you will love staying here. Neil was an excellent host. He was very responsive and respectful of our privacy. In addition, he even set out toys and games for our kids. The site is about a 10 minute drive from downtown lanesboro which is fabulous biking! This site is off grid so make sure you bring water and bug spray. Would absolutely stay here again and would recommend to friends and family who want quiet time in nature.
