Remote private tract in northern Michigan with Portage Creek to camp at, right up close. No neighbors, no other campers! 10 miles from Grayling so you can run into town for needed supplies with little time or effort. Bring your kayaks and swimsuit for a quick splash. The creek is mostly shallow with some deeper spots. There are downed trees so the kids can kayak without going too far away but they can go out of line of sight and hearing, so please be watchful. The last ½ mile road in can be very sandy in spots or sometimes flooded so you are encouraged to call or enquire prior to arrival, 4WD recommended for towing an RV. We recommend your first arrival during daylight hours so you can see the entrance of the property. The non-maintained county road, the last ½ mile in is typically not passable during winter and snow seasons except by snowshoe or snowmobile due to the snow level. Never leave children or pets unattended! Be aware of the chance encounter with an endangered massasauga rattler, it may be endangered but it is still poisonous and they have been seen on and around the property before. Ticks are on the rise, and the springtime can be very buggy, and mosquito-y with the surrounding swampy areas. There are bear, coyote, and an assortment of other creatures big and small. This is a wilderness area and so please be aware of wild animals. Never leave your small contained fire unattended at the firepit and watch for sparks, completely douse the fire before you leave as this is a fire-prone area. No fires outside the firepit for safety reasons and fire hazards. If you want firewood here in Grayling, there are a few places that sell it. There is down debris in our woods but as the summer goes by, it may be picked through. You can pull and circle through the open area with your RV, or you can tuck into the RV / camping spot. There is enough room for 5 or 6 cars but campers may crowd that a bit. If you are tent camping, you are welcome to set up elsewhere on the property. There are trails throughout the property and you may see the ‘No Trespassing’ signs all along the perimeter of the 23.7 acres. The toilet is now working again, but we ask that you not overtaxed it ;p . The small cabin is fairly stocked with pots and pans, good for campfire cooking. Picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate on site for your use. There are tons of nearby outdoor recreational opportunities and water bodies very close by, or you can spend your time on this private tract. The military board land and small arms range is just past the road to the west, you may hear small arms practice at times, the sound of freedom.

Our property is undeveloped, so you will need to bring drinking water, but there's no need to worry about finding firewood before your arrive as we supply you with all you need. There are beautiful wooded trails that will guide you to the river's edge where you can enjoy the beauty and wildlife along the West Branch of the Sturgeon River. It will feel as if you are in the middle of nowhere, yet the convenience of the small town of Vanderbilt is just three miles away. We are located just three miles off of I-75. The larger town of Gaylord is only a 15 minute drive south. There's lots to do here in beautiful Northern Michigan! Only a few miles from our camp you can go for a swim at Thumb Lake Park or take a bike ride along the North Central State Trail in Vanderbilt. Drive 15 minutes north and you can canoe or kayak the main branch of the Sturgeon River in Wolverine. There are many great hiking trails in the Pigeon River State Forest and the North Country National Scenic Trail is only 6 miles away.

West Branch is about 25 minutes away with the big box stores as well. Just down the road is Kenyon's Lakeside Resort, a historic Michigan Landmark and excellent restaurant with good food, music, and more. Another excellent must-visit just down the road is Lovewell's corner store, one of the best camp stores (and more) around!! Site 3 is nice and open, I went during the winter so make sure you have 4x4 before attempting to get to the site in the snow! Beautiful area, nice and quiet. Definitely need to revisit in the summer time, would recommend.

We stayed at River Daze and had a nice, quiet getaway. The host was very friendly and helpful — he was waiting when we arrived, guided us to our spot, and even had the water and electric hookups ready to go. The property sits right on the Tobacco River, which would be great in the summer for kayaking, canoeing, or tubing. It was beautiful in the fall. There are a few walking trails, and it’s less than a half mile to town, which is super convenient. There is a porta-john close for convenience. It felt cozy and tucked-away. Overall, it was peaceful, clean, and the host clearly puts care into making guests comfortable.

Quiet, despite a nearby road/bridge, and situated on the Tobacco River, Riverdaze offered me a private retreat while visiting friends nearby. I stayed for 3 nights with two pups and enjoyed the hospitality of the host as well as the convenience of nearby activities and restaurants. The hosts are putting work into the property, with improvements, and I'll keep it in mind if in the area again. The sites are perfect for tenters, small trailers, or those interested in boondocking with fire rings and picnic tables provided. A new treehouse and available water activities are great for families and adventurists.

Kevin and Laurie are Top Notch. My and family and I have had the privilege of staying at Bear Paw 3 times. Our kids love to swim in the pond, fish, and explore the grounds. There plenty of playgrounds and for the kids to playWe enjoy sitting by the fire using the wood that’s provided. Kevin and Laurie not only keep the grounds well maintained but they genuinely care. They check on us periodically throughout the stay to see if we need anything. It’s clear to see that providing a memory-filled camping experience is what they strive for. We have camped at state parks and county parks as well, but Bear Paw rises to the top for us! Thank you!

The spaces to camp are great whether on river or not. Outhouses available. Host greeted us at the entrance. Amenities available soccer nets volleyball net balls included. Access to river for kayaking. Hosts were very accommodating. Had items available when we needed. Accommodated our needs to be Have side-by-side campers. Dog friendly. Host helped with kayaking down the river by showing us location. Fun extra amenities for kids such as rope swing slide inflatable screen for movie watching. So many things we enjoyed would not hesitate to go back when we have the opportunity. Thank you!

Where to go

P.H. Hoeft State Park

Drive northeast to Lake Huron and stay at P.H. Hoeft State Park. Covering almost 300 acres of land, the park is home to sandy shores and unique trails. The Huron Sunrise Trail is connected to the park by a paved, non-motorized road along the beach to Rogers City. It ends in the world’s largest open-pit limestone mine with unforgettable views along the way. Choose from over 100 on-site campsites (some with electrical hookups), mini-cabin rentals, or lakefront lodging for a cozy stay at any time of year.

Wilderness State Park

Wander along 20 miles of trails near Lake Michigan and Sturgeon Bay shorelines at Wilderness State Park. Pet-friendly beaches are available for day use. The park also provides dark skies and a mixture of dense forests, open meadows, and wetlands. Find campsites, rustic cabin rentals, bunkhouses, and walk-in primitive campsites throughout the park with a small number of 50-amp service campsites available, as well. Designated as a dark sky preserve, Wilderness State Park asks campers to go lights out at dark for stargazing.

Huron-Manistee National Forest

East of Roscommon, Huron-Manistee National Forests’ vast land brings forestry to life between the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. From hiking and horseback riding to sand dunes and wildflower sanctuaries, Huron-Manistee has it all. Dispersed and primitive camping is allowed almost anywhere in the forest unless marked—setting up within 200 feet of water is also not allowed. Developed campgrounds in specific areas of the forest offer tent campsites, group camping, horse campsites, and OHV areas; however, there are no RV hookups anywhere in the forest. Permits are required for campsites but not for dispersed camping.

When to go

Despite the chilling temperatures of Northern Michigan winters, camping is available year-round with proper planning and equipment. Considered a humid continental climate, Roscommon experiences warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Due to the surrounding Great Lakes, summer temperatures don’t get higher than 66°F, but the humidity attracts mosquitoes to the area. Temperatures drop below freezing from late fall to early spring. Winter campers should prepare for cold-weather camping and snow.
