EarthWell Retreat Center boasts a spring-fed swimming pond situated on forty acres of rolling prairie, forest and wetland, surrounded by one hundred acres of Washtenaw County Nature Preserve. Six off-grid sleeping cabins dot the landscape, all within a short walk to our Common House, that includes a large gathering space, community kitchen/dining and bathrooms/shower. EarthWell offers Yoga and Meditation classes and weekend retreats year-round.
Located in Southeastern Michigan, just 30 minutes west of Ann Arbor, and near the towns of Grasslake, Chelsea, Manchester. (All downtowns are 7-10 miles away). EarthWell allows hiking, wildlife watching (amazing sandhill cranes), swimming and canoeing/kayaking/paddleboating in our pond.
East of Chelsea is the expansive Pinckney and Waterloo State Recreation areas, with over 20 lakes and trails for hikers, bikers, backpackers, and horseback riders.
There are two households (the families of Ari Wakeman and Emily Adama) that live permanently on the property. (one in the lower level of the common house, and one in a cabin 200 yards from the common house.) During your rental they will maintain quiet and privacy for your group, but will remain on the property for the duration of your stay and will be available should any issues arise.

There are a number of trails to walk on the 35 private acreage of rolling hills. This heavily wooded land hosts much wildlife and beautiful scenery. There is a sport court which provides opportunities to play basketball, volleyball, pickleball, or badminton. The property is a work in progress with lots of plans for the future; including a food forest, natural pool, recreation building (being built summer 2022), and more.. Need a quiet, secluded getaway? Our off-grid cabin is on approximately 10 acres of private woods. As you turn off the main road into our cabin's driveway, you will begin to understand why this is our hidden gem. Enjoy the coziness of a wood stove in the winter or a crackling fire in seclusion in the summer- this little getaway cabin is sure to create fond memories. Maybe you will hear the horned owl at night or see an eagle while you kayak. Your adventure or a peaceful vacation awaits.
The 450-square-foot cabin has a queen bed in the loft and two cots that can accommodate more guests. Guests must be able to climb a wooden log ladder.
The kitchen has a two-burner stove and oven that can hold a 9x13 pan. Although we do not have running water, we do have a hand-washing sink and a sink for washing dishes. We also provide you with plenty of water for washing and drinking during your stay. As it is well water, you may want to take your own drinking water, if you prefer. We also have dishes, utensils, hot dog sticks, fry pie makers, pots and pans, a tripod grill for over the fire, and a small charcoal grill (bring your own charcoal). You will also want to bring a cooler to keep any food cold.
Outside, we have a fire pit, wood to collect or purchase, and a hammock to fully enjoy your stay. Our bathroom is an outhouse and has been described as the “cleanest outhouse in Michigan.” Our latest addition is a seasonal rustic outdoor shower! We provide water that is heated by solar power (or you can heat some on the stove to hurry the process!) The shower is seasonal - only available from May to September.
Within 1/4 mile is the St. Joe River which is a great place for kayaking. We also have kayaks and quads for rent. We also have some short trails on the property and a railroad bed adjacent to the cabin area.
Our cabin is powered by a small and very quiet Honda generator. It is super easy to start. The cabin’s main source of heat is a wood stove with wood we provide. An air conditioner is provided for the summer.
For more than two people will be an additional $10 per night per person.
Pets are a $25 per pet additional fee.
Pets are not to be on furniture and not to be taken into the loft for their protection.

This is a great spot off the beaten path. A hidden gem. Scott and his wife were super welcoming on their property and we're able to help with anything we needed. Deer walked thru the camp and property. Lovely walking path thru the property as well. Very welcoming. We will definitely be back soon.

Weekend Trip to Camper On 11 Acres, Private Site
This was our first time using Hipcamp and it was a great experience. Place looks just like the pictures, beautiful and cozy. Far away from town to feel like you've gotten away but close enough that you can run and grab something at walmart or get a bite to eat if you don't feel like cooking. Scott was a great host, we were having a hard time getting our fire going since it had been raining a few days before. He came to our rescue and we sat and enjoyed chatting for the evening. Inside the camper was a cute little smore set up that we took advantage of. It was clean and spacious. You could tell it's been taken great care of. Will definitely be back!

We had an absolute blast! Scott and Christine were extremely accommodating hosts. The camper was stocked and clean, the campsite was well lit and so nice and quiet. We saw deer and turkey in the mornings, sipping coffee by the fire. They have all the tools and utensils you may need for cooking either in the kitchen or on the fire. 10/10 would recommend and will be returning. Thank you!

My son and I camped on Emily's property for 5 days, set camp up right next to the beautiful pond where you can fish or go swimming. The property is absolutely beautiful with trails you can walk an explore and watch wildlife everywhere. Would totally recommend great place to relax and unwind. I hammock camped in a beautiful site next to the pond. Compost toilets were nearby and very well taken care of (these are small, self-contained toilets that may not be a great option for larger individuals), with a full shower and bathroom at the retreat center up front. Water pressure in the shower was VERY low, but it was as expected for a small earth-centric retreat center (if you need a shower while the retreat center is in place or find yourself in need of water pressure to blast off a long day, the TA truck stop is 15 minutes away and offers private showers for $17. Tent camping area had a few gorgeous trees protecting it and a fire pit for use.
Owners were very welcoming, met me at arrival and provided a tour of the retreat center, map of the property, and information on anything I needed.
Excellent property, would absolutely stay again.

Earthwell is a wonderful place to unplug and immerse yourself in nature without feeling completely cut off from humanity.
The retreat has charming, well-stocked cabins that felt cozy and homey. Firewood and amenities were thoughtfully provided. Outhouses were well-maintained and managed odor surprisingly well.
The property itself is stunning: grass trails wind through meadows, forests, hills, and streams, with a pond perfect for paddling (canoes, kayaks, and a paddleboat are included). Wildlife is abundant- fish, frogs, and turtles in the pond; hawks, bats, and countless birds overhead; and even the distant calls of coyotes and foxes. The diversity of trees- walnut, oak, maple, and pines- made the terrain lush and vibrant. Nights brought a gorgeous starry sky and mornings offered beautiful sunrises.
The host, Emily, was warm and welcoming while providing plenty of space. Chelsea, just ten minutes away, makes for an easy day trip or supply run, but you may never want to leave the property.
Overall, Earthwell is a fantastic spot for several days of peaceful retreat and a place that captures the best of Pure Michigan.

Following my review on the main campsite, this one was a great addition for my larger group. Scott helped us back in our pop-up camper. There’s a few different ways to park your camper if it is similar to our pop-up. The extra site has its own picnic table and fire pit. Close enough to the main site to feel like you’re camping together, but far enough to feel private as well. Full hook-ups were available as stated in the listing. Would definitely recommend to larger groups!

Scott and Christine are very friendly and welcoming. They made sure we were all settled in and even helped us back in the pop-up camper to the extra campsite. So honored to be the first group to use the extra site! My group included 7 adults and 1 dog. We had a great time relaxing, playing games, and making some amazing food over the fire! The campsites felt very private and perfect for camping. The weekend we stayed was hot and humid, but the AC in the camper felt amazing. The camper was spacious and had just about everything you need. There’s a nice trail that was perfect for walking the dog. Thank you Scott and Christine for being amazing hosts and we loved getting to know you! We would love to stay again!

Beautiful, serene tent, camping space on a super clean swimming pond. You will need to cart your belongings to your site (they provide the carts) but it’s a five minute walk and I did it in three trips for a full weekend. For me, it was 100% worth it for such a bucolic spot and great hospitality.

We had such a great visit to EarthWell retreat! We absolutely loved our little rustic cabin and all the details made it so inviting and cozy. No need for electricity when they provide wireless fans and lanterns. The grounds are very well taken care of, the trails easy to walk and explore. The pond wasn’t too swimmable as it was later in the summer and the vegetation was high but we never felt that distracted from our weekend. Chelsea is close and has lots of options for food and shopping. Having the main house for charging and showers was a really nice extra benefit. We also fell in love with a very friendly kitty that came to visit us a few times. Overall, this is a great place to come and take a break from it all. Highly recommend!

I highly recommend Scott & Kristine's listing!
It was perfect for what we envisioned with our toddler and 2 dogs; a camping feeling while still having a space with a door to keep said toddler from escaping, and also a retreat from the rain and heat. Even though Scott & Kristine reside on the property the site is private, and had just about everything we needed plus more. The dogs had space to be off leads, the property had a nice trail, Scott and Kristine came over to introduce themselves and give us the lay of the land, which was very nice and the RV is HUGE, the pictures don't do it justice.
Not a negative but something to keep in mind if you're a hot sleeper like me, the bed itself is comfortable but it sleeps VERY hot. Whatever the material the mattress is made of just exudes heat. While the air conditioner works VERY well I needed a robust fan for more air movement and the fan they had available just didn't cut it. So I would suggest if you are a hot sleeper bring a small powerful fan, crank the AC up at night and you should be golden!
All in all, if we end back up in Kalamazoo we would absolutely stay here again!

The camper was such a fun way to camp for our family of four. We have two younger children (including a very curious and active toddler), and they were delighted by the camper and the surrounding property and trails. We were greeted quickly after arriving. The camper was clean and well equipped. We hope to return!

7 nights at Camper On 11 Acres, Private Site
Where do I start.... peaceful,relaxing, beautiful awesome place to stay! Scott and Chris both are the Best!! You feel so comfortable with them They give you your privacy But They are right there to help with anything you need The fifth wheel was so comfortable and the beds were very nice We stayed ( my sister and I) for a week and it was the best place I have stayed since staying places through Hip camp! There are paths to walk through in the woods a beautiful area outside to sit have a fire and just relax and enjoy the day There are deer ,wild turkeys and a special owl that we got lucky enough to see! I would say if you love the outdoors a nice place to stay Awesome people to meet And oh, two beautiful,friendly playful dogs that come visit You have got to try this one out for sure! ☺️ We will definitely be back! We loved it!

I loved staying the camper on Scott and Christine’s property, I found the hosts to be very accommodating and gracious. They were kind enough to give us some recommendations on things to do in the area, and also respected our privacy. The site has a trail on the property to getting out and stretching your legs. We found it to be both family and dog friendly.
Camper shower worked great, was well stocked and it was wonderful to have fire wood available.
Will come back for sure!
