We're a non profit community garden in the Old Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, a 15 minute drive or ferry ride to the French Quarter. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden.
Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by.
Property amenities include an open air bathroom and shower, communal screened porch with seating area, propane grill and various pots/pans, cooking gear and tableware, fridge, picnic tables and a small fire pit. In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

I stayed at what I think is the best spot—Campsite 2—and had a great experience. The water was beautiful, and the whole area felt peaceful and relaxing. Damon was helpful and let me know where water might collect if it rained. My dog and I weren’t bothered by anyone and really enjoyed the quiet. I’d definitely stay here again.

genuinely cannot say enough nice things about this Hipcamp. Phanat could not have been a lovelier host — he even shared king cake with me, which felt so special and personal. The space itself was peaceful and thoughtfully cared for, but what really stood out was what he’s building for the community. I stayed here because it was an affordable place to stay for Mardi Gras, but I definitely plan to come back when I have more time to hang out and volunteer at the farm! It is a very quiet and peaceful space, and a really cool project based on taking care of the community :)

We loved our stay! It was a quick overnight on a long road trip but the animal sanctuary caught our attention!
You do need to make sure you have clear expectations. It's not a typical campground. The family home is part of it and the bathroom and shower are separate but attached to the main home.
Each camp site it private and have a couple different options for amenities depending what you are looking for. From primitive camp to tent provided!
There is an extra sink, counter and microwave accessible as well.
The animals are all over. The dogs are sooooo sweet and lovey. There are goats, emus, turkeys, chickens, roosters, peacocks, horses, cats, dogs.
We did arrive late at night it was dark and despite the very clear instructions for arrival we struggled finding the camp spots. The hosts responded quickly and guided us to our options!
It was an amazing experience. It was quiet peaceful and beautifully dark! We would definitely return!

Ginny and her husband were friendly and accommodating! We had one very small issue and they were proactive to take care of it. Showers were warm and the bed was comfy. I loved having access to a fire pit. Ginny has thought to stock the rv with anything you could possibly need!

I loved tent camping here! The setup was just as described, and the amenities were unique and perfect. The location was ideal for spending New Year's in NOLA. The ferry was quick and only $2 one way, so I could explore the city and escape to some serenity to sleep. I highly recommend this spot.

It was good for value but nothing exciting. Kids loved the animals roaming everywhere but the RV powered sites are right at the entrance of the property, little charm. There is only one 30 Amp outlet so if the other site is using it, bad luck. There is no water connecting near by either, hoses are available from the house but we did not feel comfortable to get a use them. Host did not respond to any of our messages via Hipcamp and when we arrived and called to know where to go, the phone line was disconnected. So we had to go knocking. We did not feel welcome really.
Price was good though and it might be an oasis (as describe) when camping a little more in but from the site we had, it was just a parking spot.
