Welcome to Big Branch Apiary, a 50 acre honey and blueberry farm north of Lake Pontchartrain. We're bounded by the Big Branch Wildlife Reserve to the south and a Rails to Trails bike path on the north. We are 3 miles from Lacombe to the east, 4 miles from Mandeville to the west, about 3 miles from Fountainbleu State Park, and an hour from New Orleans. Most of the farm is a mix of hardwood forest and wetlands. Desert Bayou and East Branch Bayou meander across the property. The farm has deer, foxes, bobcats, owls, fireflies, otters, raccoons, turtles, and, well, about anything common to the wilds of the Gulf South. This includes a litany of snakes, mosquitoes, and deer flies in season. About 8 acres are used to raise poultry, bees and organically farmed blueberries. Overall, the land feels primordial and pristine. We are a designated Monarch Waystation and in the spring and fall see many migrating butterflies. We cultivate a lot of flowers so almost year round you can see butterflies in profusion. We are part of the USDAs Conservation Stewardship Program, concentrating on protecting and increasing habitat for animals and pollinators. Pets are welcome but please leash them. Campfires are allowed except on rare occasions. You can hunt for deadfalls in the woods on the farm, or we can provide firewood for a small fee. Our honey, fresh eggs, and homemade sourdough can be purchased as well. This is a rustic situation: think dry camping, outdoor (heated) shower, and outhouses. We have a tiny treehouse, an A-frame, a glamping tent, and several places to pitch a tent. The farm is pretty secure--someone is on-site most of the time, it's gated, and there are security cameras at access points. But it is a farm in a rural community--you may hear roosters crow, sheep bleat, dogs bark, and the sounds of owls, hawks, coyotes, and other native wildlife. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden. Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by. Property amenities include an open air bathroom and shower, communal screened porch with seating area, propane grill and various pots/pans, cooking gear and tableware, fridge, picnic tables and a small fire pit. The property is an old homestead recently reclaimed and being brought back to life after many years abandoned. Early 1800s Bulgarian immigrants started a little community here called Stein. The old railroad used to pass through and there are alot of artifacts scattered throughout the property. We are in the process of cleaning up the old cabin built in late 1800s suprisingly still standing. The hardwood forest has a creek running through that is virtually untouched and home to wildlife of all kinds. Birds and wildlife of all kinds have a home here and no hunting allowed. Some trails have been cut and there are some natural trails for exploring the property through the hardwoods and campers are welcome to make new ones. A spring fed pond is great for fishing or just relaxing under the majestic live oaks. If Mushroom foraging is your thing you are in luck after a nice rain. This place had the best of southeast Louisiana and truly is a hidden gem. We are still in the clearing process so there are alot of projects going on but we definitely have some cool spots to pitch a tent. Host is on property in shipping container and willing to make accommodations as needed as we have electricity but are pretty much off the grid.. do not have an outdoor bathroom but could set something up with little effort. Have running water for solar shower or creek bath if you'd rather. Since we are still rebuilding there are some piles of lumber and things that may be unsafe for small children and animals. I have 2 dogs on the property with me but are fenced and friendly. If you have any questions just ask!

Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. Traffic on the neighborhood road is not bad and the sound of the train, two time during the night was not very loud. The Farm and grounds keeper, Jen is delightful and very helpful. She does the whole farm to Market with the produce. Wish we lived closer so we could visit this quaint and great hide out. Jim and Sheila

The yoga barn camping site was perfect for me. I was traveling through, camping in my car with my dog, and we just needed a quiet, grassy, peaceful, dark at night, place to stay where we didn't have to listen to people's TVs or music in their RVs or their generators. I loved it at Jan's place and highly recommend it if you love peace and quiet with your camping!!

We had a great time at Jan’s place! It was super clean, the shower was nice and hot, and we enjoyed a wonderful fire with the firewood provided. The area felt very safe, and I highly recommend staying here!

Mark has cultivated a true gem of a space in Algier's Point. I stayed at the tent site for two weeks. It was most days only a 10 minute drive across the bridge for work in the NOLA CBD. I was surrounded by a living garden and it was fantastic. Mark is a lovely human, and it's reflected in his intentional community space. There was also a hot shower and a kitchen I could use. I could not have stumbled upon a better place to be. Thank you, Mark. I'll be back.

Good little piece of property with many options for Tent, Vehicle or rooftop camping. Host is cool, offered to cut some limbs if necessary but wasn’t needed… quiet and peaceful. Good stargazing spot!. Camping creekside next time.

I would most definitely recommend Damon's land for camping! It was peaceful and quiet but not too far from town. As a solo female camper, I felt safe. Having access to the RV (which could have been a little cleaner, but was not the worst public bathroom I've seen!) with a flush toilet, hot running water, and shower was a game changer for my trip ~ I had planned to split my 2 week vacation between camping and hostels, but decided to camp the whole time! I will camp on Damon's land again the next time I am in Louisiana!

We loved staying at Phanats garden, it is a beautiful respite from a largely industrial area. It was so lovely to check out the gardens and so many plants and beautiful brick buildings. I would say this hipcamp makes more sense if u have an rv or trailer, tent camping was okay but it did rain and the grounds flooded (which Phanat warned us would happen so no fault to them). We felt very safe and would stay again albiet maybe during a dryer season.

Wow this wonderful place is not only charming but has so much to do around it. Ginny & Scotty are the most wonderful hosts. Ginny has all information for you when you arrive about restaurants, local pubs, 100 yr old store that was a gem. They have a very level spot with a picnic table, Tiki torches and a very nice porch to sit and enjoy getting to know each other. We cant wait to come back.

Our stay at De' Thibodeaux was great. The forest surrounding our camp felt private and secluded. The open grass fields between the campsites created an open air atmosphere. At night, you could hear a symphony of crickets and owls. The lighted bridge across the canal into the trail felt magical. My only drawback was that I brought too much gear. I was not prepared for the amount of walking it would take to get from the campsite, back to the vehicle. Otherwise, it was an amazing area.And a lot of culture and sites to be seen in surrounding areas.

Great spot! The garden is beautyfull & peaceful, especially for being so close to everything. The shower was better than a lot of houses I've stayed in, so yay for that. Definitely a great experience. My favorite was hearing the boat horns & a marching band practicing at the coast guard campus nearby. Love being right on the levee/river.... Thnx!

This was a beautiful location and great introduction to Louisiana terrain for a family who had never been :) Our stay got cut short due to some environmental influences (some heavy rain and brown recluses within the tent). Would have loved to stay if we prepped better and didn't have a young child with. Only complaint, is parking is described on site, I would say its better stated as on property, as this is not a drive up to your site and unload kind of experience. If we would have known, we would have packed much lighter. Regardless, a beautiful spot, accommodating host, and lots of wildlife to be heard at night!
