We're a non profit community garden in the Old Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, a 15 minute drive or ferry ride to the French Quarter. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden.
Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by.
Property amenities include an open air bathroom and shower, communal screened porch with seating area, propane grill and various pots/pans, cooking gear and tableware, fridge, picnic tables and a small fire pit. There is an herb garden out front and there may be fruits and vegetables available for you, fresh from the garden, depending on the time of year.

The fenced-in site is in a well lived in, low-income, busy neighborhood of New Iberia. The hosts live in the small brick cottage in front. The property is surrounded by gardens for guests to enjoy. There is a 15AMP regular outlet to plug into and a nearby water hose for travelers to use. We used to have a white German sheperd "Peanut" but he passed away in 2025. So that's the dog seen in some pics. There is a little dog "Lithium" (terrier mix) that stays on the property and will be out sometimes but generally stays inside the camper belonging to our groundskeeper Jenn.

WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

Come to a campsite near you that is just outside the city, but a place to let go of the wifi and be in Nature! We have Ground dwelling and tree dwelling sites Available. Our site is about 8 mins from Cankton and 20 mins from Lafayette. So there is a place to stop in to get water and not really necessary but more wood . We do supply Water if you need it, and can set up a shower if you request it.

Nice quiet out of the way campsite with several spots to choose from. Sit and watch the lazy water drift by on the bayou as you listen to the frogs from the backwater creek. This was a peaceful stop for us and the host was accommodating, helpful, and informative. There is a shower house and laundry as well as WiFi, and full hook ups. We highly recommend this site. Easily fit a 35 foot rig. It was surprisingly easy to get to.

My first Hipcamp overnight stay. So take that in consideration. Great hideaway right on the bayou. Definitely don’t want to miss this hidden gem off I-20.
Communications from booking to checkout was great, Phildon’s reply to any question I had was answered promptly. Great leveled land and hookups conveniently to rear of camper. Thank you again.

It’s so peaceful! We had a rush stay, got there right at dusk. Yet…it was oh so beautiful. The morning fog off the pond was spectacular. The fire pits are great. The horses! I am really looking forward to going back someday! My wife loved it too! Her first time tent camping ever!

Ahhh this place is so special and unique !! My first time staying in an animal sanctuary. You can tell the animals are incredibly happy there and treated well as everyone of them is friendly, including the emus which is not something I expected! The property is beautiful and Alyssa is incredibly sweet and welcoming. The stars of the show are definitely the animals, the cutest tiniest little piglet I ever seen called snoot, two beautiful horses, big fluffy dogs that’s love people, a pack of goats that are so funny to watch. There are also ducks, roosters, pigs.
This is a must go to for any animal

It's far enough from the university to feel the tranquility of nature, she offers an incredible outdoor shower and a great fire pit to lounge by or cook your dinner over. The bathroom situation was great, and we could not recommend this land more!

This was one of the most beautiful farms I have ever been at. It was so magical! Our little spot was right next to the pond and the bathrooms were an easy walk. I absolutely loved getting to see all the animals. And the dogs were so sweet!

There’s just not enough good things to say about this place. Less than 5 minutes off the main Interstate is nestled this country oasis. Quiet! Serene! Friendly! Ample space! And animals! Lots of them, from goats to emus to turkeys to horses to chickens and on and on. This is a classy spot without the clutter of your normal Hipcamp. This will be my go to, when passing through, the geaux !!!

What a charming sanctuary that the residents share with us hip campers. Horses, emus pot belly pigs and more roam freely. My site was private and faced a pond. The bathroom was lovely. Recycling a plus! If I had been a young person looking to learn about taking care of animals and gardening, I would have stayed forever. But I am old, did all that already and it's time to go home.
