WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

We're a non profit community garden in the Old Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, a 15 minute drive or ferry ride to the French Quarter. We use the money from these bookings to fund the community food access work that we do. While you're here you can enjoy our peaceful and spacious garden property, and we encourage you to get to know some of the fantastic neighbors who use our community fridge and herb garden.
Take the scenic Mississippi River Levee Path 1 mile to get to the Algiers Ferry dock which departs every 30 minutes and drops you off at the foot of Canal Street in the heart of New Orleans. If you have a car you can cross the bridge and get to most of the city in 15 minutes. You can also explore Algiers Point with its many restaurants, bars, local art and historic buildings. The levee trail is a block away, where you can jog, bike, or just watch the boats go by.
Property amenities include an open air bathroom and shower, communal screened porch with seating area, propane grill and various pots/pans, cooking gear and tableware, fridge, picnic tables and a small fire pit. There is an herb garden out front and there may be fruits and vegetables available for you, fresh from the garden, depending on the time of year.

Primitive camping on Caddo Lake is an experience like no other. Spanning 25,400 acres, the naturally formed fresh water lake gracefully crosses from Louisiana into Texas and is home to the largest cypress forest in the world.
The area on which this camp is located is rich in history--once the dwelling place of Caddo Indians who were known for their basket weaving and pottery skills. The site was part of the land acquired by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
Caddo Lake has a unique ecosystem and is a high quality habitat for many species, including migratory and resident waterfowl, osprey, eagles, alligators, and many species of fish. It is considered to be a valuable water system and Texas' only wetland of international importance.
Kayaks, canoes, and peddle boats may be launched from the shore.
Visitors will want to be familiar with Louisiana State Laws concerning boating and fishing, including those that apply to children. Fires are permitted unless there is a Parish mandated burn ban in effect.

The fenced-in site is in a well lived in, low-income, busy neighborhood of New Iberia. The hosts live in the small brick cottage in front. The property is surrounded by gardens for guests to enjoy. There is a 15AMP regular outlet to plug into and a nearby water hose for travelers to use. We used to have a white German sheperd "Peanut" but he passed away in 2025. So that's the dog seen in some pics. There is a little dog "Lithium" (terrier mix) that stays on the property and will be out sometimes but generally stays inside the camper belonging to our groundskeeper Jenn.

Lovely little spot! We stayed in the RV and it was perfect for our needs. Comfortable, cozy RV, bed was comfy. If it had not been raining we would have really enjoyed the outdoor patio area also. Hosts were just wonderful! Sooo very sweet. Location was fun! Close to several locations where you can take a great airboat ride! Wish we could have stayed longer. Highly highly recommend!

This is our 2md overnight in 2 years at Phanat’s little oasis in the middle of New Iberia and we highly recommend. Our late arrival and rainy weather prevented us from enjoying the full experience (lovely Zen garden area!) but we still enjoyed a peaceful night of sleep.

The hippest HipCamp we’ve ever stayed in. Enjoyed hanging out with the other folks staying here. Beautiful quiet neighborhood, we loved being within walking distance of the ferry across to NOLA but also enjoyed some of the neighborhood eateries and bars. Tight squeeze for our 20’ trailer but we did it!

I stopped here to tent camp as the perfect halfway point on a trip. The first time I was greeted by friendly dogs and cute animals but didn’t know where to go and it was getting dark, so i set up by the barn and felt odd. The second time I met the host and I realized there was a road that went along the water and had little private camp sites, which i could drive right up too. It was so nice and beautiful! And much quieter over there. Alyssa was so sweet and awesome. I appreciated having the nice indoor bathroom. This was my first time solo camping and I felt really comfortable there. I adored all the animals. They are so fun and cute. I want to go back and visit them some time!

Phildon reached out to me before I arrived to give me an update on the weather and the info about the shower house.
The tent site was very cozy, close to the water. There were lots of frogs singing when I arrived around 10 pm. There was a concrete pad I could park my motorcycle on.

A gem of a little campsite.... I pulled in after dark and was led by hosts to a lighted pathway leading to a bridge over a small coulée... Had the entire site to myself.... a wooded copse full of fireflies and owls...
Negatives would be of course the inevitable and ever-present mosquitoes found in wooded damp areas of south Louisiana... were not however overwhelming... Of more concern were the fire ants.... These South American fire ants are well established in south Louisiana ... there were several treated hills that had been killed but more had come about since this treatment and I mentioned this to the hosts.
I stayed Friday Saturday and Sunday night... I was surprised at the amount of vehicular traffic in the area including four-wheeling kids.... But things definitely calmed down as the night progressed.
Ali will mention the GPS directions are somewhat flawed depending on the direction you take ...Probably a good idea to talk to Ali to get the fine visual points of where to turn.
Overall this was a very nice experience.... very kind and gracious hosts and prices significantly better than some of the surrounding choices for hip camping

This spot was exactly what we needed. My son (12) was tired of sleep camping in the Jeep with me through Cracker Barrel’s and truck stops across 5 states. He wanted to sleep by himself in a tent. We needed to charge our EcoFlow power station, too. So Damon’s spot gave us a night to refresh and each have a night to our own space before moving on.

Phildon was super communicative wven when not on site. Recommended a perfect available pitch and answered all questions quickly. My tip would be to aak for WiFi password before arrival as we had zero signal with Verizon and had to drive out to get supplies and a signal. We did not use the bathrooms or laundry facilities so cannot comment on those. Hook up was 50 amps. Phildon had an 50-30 adaptor if required but we had our own. Lovely little spot in the Bayou.

Nice quiet out of the way campsite with several spots to choose from. Sit and watch the lazy water drift by on the bayou as you listen to the frogs from the backwater creek. This was a peaceful stop for us and the host was accommodating, helpful, and informative. There is a shower house and laundry as well as WiFi, and full hook ups. We highly recommend this site. Easily fit a 35 foot rig. It was surprisingly easy to get to.

Along the Gulf
Head along Louisiana’s coast, where you’ll find recreation areas, wildlife refuges, and, of course, beach campgrounds galore. Grand Isle State Park sits as close to the water as you can get, where RV sites are a fisherman’s paradise.
Follow the Mississippi
If you prefer the river to the gulf, stop in St. Francisville to get a taste of Louisiana’s local charm. The Mississippi River winds through Eastern Louisiana, and you can ride horses, hike, and fish throughout Tunica Hills. The peaceful blufflands house unique plants and animals, so you can birdwatch while cabin or tent camping.
Toward the Texas Border
Everything’s bigger in Texas—but not the Toledo Bend Reservoir, which hugs the border. On the Louisiana side, check out the RV campsite and cabin rentals at South or North Toledo Bend State Park. The area harbors some of the best Louisiana campgrounds, with picnic tables and group campsites. Cypress Bend State Park likewise overlooks the reservoir and offers unparalleled views.
Central Louisiana
You don’t have to head toward the state’s edge to appreciate Louisiana's beauty. Chicot State Park hovers in the state’s central south, with more than 6,000 acres of rolling hills. Within the park, you’ll find trails, cabins, and the Louisiana State Arboretum. There’s no better place to learn about—and see—the state's varied landscape.
When to go
Hurricane season runs between June and November. Save yourself the stress of unpredictable weather, and head to Louisiana between fall and spring. Remember that Mardi Gras celebrations pick up in February, so if you want a peaceful and secluded camping trip, keep the festivities—and their crowds—in mind. Luckily, enough campsites pop up beyond Louisiana’s major cities. You can easily find the perfect campground year-round.
