Welcome to Red Gate Farm, LLC, a farm with a vision! We previously ran a very successful Hipcamp site at our previous property, but completely relocated and are starting fresh! We purchased 50 acres of GORGEOUS timbered property, with rolling forested hills, several creeks, trees towering over 100 feet tall, and abundant wildlife. It's absolutely perfect for Hipcamp!
Building a new farm (and Hipcamp program) from scratch takes time--years even, but we decided now is as a good a time as any to share our beautiful timber with Hipcampers looking for some peace and privacy. While the site itself will be groomed and set up as listed, the surrounding grass won't be perfectly green yet, there will still be a lot of dead-wood and natural debris around the sites, and trails are a bit rough and uneven. If you can overlook the "rustic" aspects though, and enjoy the beauty of the peace and quiet of just enjoying nature, as it has sat unmanaged for roughly 50 years around the sites, then you are likely to love every moment!
If you desire more adventure than just hanging around and enjoying nature, be sure to check out the additional experiences we offer here on the farm, as well as the entire surrounding area. We live on 70 secluded acres adjoining the Shawnee National Forest area with some hiking opportunities, woods and water activities that we would love to share with you. Close to Garden of the Gods (10 min), Rimrock, Pounds Hollow, Belle Smith Springs, Lusk Creek and other trails. We are in the middle of the Shawnee surrounded by trees, our own lake, you can hike around and walk the land in solitude, yet we are only 25 minutes to Harrisburg. This is a unique site located in the Ozark Highlands. Only 45 minutes from Cape Girardeau (a small river town on the Mississippi), and 45 minutes from the Arcadia Valley including Taum Sauk mountain (the highest point in Missouri), Elephant Rocks, the Johnston Shutins, and other beautiful areas in the highlands.
The farm is five minutes from Marble Hill, which is home to the Bollinger County Natural History museum which highlights the only dinosaur bones found in Missouri. The bones were found at a farm in Glennallen (a few minutes from our farm) as well as a great barbeque (Jay’s Restaurant) and a good catfish restaurant (Jers Restaurant). On the way to our farm, feel free to stop at the 1,700 foot deep artesian well to get a cool, refreshing jug of natural artesian well water – the water is free, but you have to bring your own containers!

Camp or plug the RV in at the site of a remote, historical home with a peaceful view of the valley. Amenities include a fire-ring, hot tub, mountain bikes and lawn games. Renting and occupying the 3 bedroom, 2 bath circa 1800 early American log home is optional. Additionally, guests have access to a private creek for added relaxation. For a fee, tours of the 1800 American log cabin and a 1790 French log cabin may be arranged through the host.

Jennifer & her husband were above and beyond accommodating! I booked last minute after the USFS campground I was trying to stay in was full, and so happy I stumbled upon Jennifer’s property instead. I was their first guest of the year, so I likely caught them off guard, but the property was absolutely perfect. I was looking for solitude, a bonfire, and clear view of the sky. This place was perfect; trees for hammocking, peaceful pond, perfect view of the sky (highly recommend for new moon or full moon!) And supplied firewood was an added bonus. When the weather shifted dramatically the day of my departure, Jennifer kindly offered an additional complimentary night if it meant safer travel for me the following day. I will absolutely stay here again!

Very quiet and peaceful! Easy to get in/out of the farm. Speaking of the farm, there 300+ acres we enjoyed wandering around during the evenings.
The hosts are super friendly as are their very sweet dogs.

My boyfriend and I travel a lot for both work and pleasure and this is definitely one of my favorite stays! This place was very peaceful. There is only dim lighting outdoors at night so the stars were amazing. Our host was very warm and welcoming as well.
The property is well kept but if you need to ask which port a potty to use, this may not be the right fit for you. You are more in nature than in the city.

Even if you stay just one night to break up travel (as I did), I highly recommend the Art Farm. The spaciousness of the camp was a delight. I arrived at the property around 9 pm, and Laura graciously showed me a secluded site towards the back of the tract. The nearest camper was far away, and though it was mid-November when I stayed, I could still envision seclusion in a busier season. The land was well-maintained, and Laura offers a variety of camping spots. Paducah was also well worth seeing- a lovely town right along the Ohio River with several cool spots! I’ll be back!

This was a perfect primitive camp for us! The area had plenty of privacy with a beautiful scenery. Early mornings, next to the woods gave a good spot to drink some coffee and watch the wildlife. Easily accessible, and not far from town if you needed to make a quick trip.
Communication with Laura was friendly, quick and easy.
Definitely saving this spot for our next trip in the area:)

This is a lovely camp site near a small pond and a 5 minute walk to a new and very clean out house. Our camp hosts were very hospital, friendly and accommodating. They brought us lots of fire wood as it was pretty cold when we stayed there. We spent many hours around the large fire ring just talking and enjoying the quiet. We did not have clear skies so we weren't able to take advantage of the star gazing, but the area is free from light pollution and the nearby field would give you lots of space to star gaze. I highly recommend this site.

We had an amazing time camping here! The host not only provided firewood, but also went above and beyond by building a fire for us while we were setting up out tent at dusk. So kind and welcoming! The property was beautiful, peaceful, and very well maintained. It felt like the safest place I've ever camped!! Would highly recommend this site!!

Loved staying here! I spent a total of four days in the woods and it was the perfect spot to stay in the evening. I especially loved that the tent area was shaded while the camping pit was just a few feet away under the open sky. I didn’t have a hammock with me, but wished that I did because there were so many great spots to hang it.
Having the shower was a blessing as well. It was great to be able to start the morning with a hot rinse.

Jennifer and John were amazing hosts! They were available whenever there were questions and the site was wonderful. Having more than enough room for a large group was a benefit and access to the pond and any firewood that was needed was a bonus. The porta potty was one of the cleanest I've seen and was close to the site. The site is about a 15 minute drive to the Garden of the Gods recreation area which is great as you are close by but not on top of a crowd of people. We camped with adults, a child, and a dog and everyone had a great time. I would highly recommend booking a trip to Sonny Hill and would love to come stay with Jennifer and John again in the future.

Tent camping here is great. The folks I met were all very friendly and helpful. The place is an operational farm with chickens, geese, horses and lots of cats. Directions were clear and straight forward. You are very close to the small town of Eldorado Illinois and they have a great pizza place, mimmos and the Mexican restaurant in town I was told is very good. Very unique experience camping on active farm. Enjoyed it very much.
