We are nestled in the midst of a mini-Rainbow Eucalyptus Rainforest, with native Ohia trees sparsely located throughout our property. Hapu'u Ferns are also within our mini-Rainbow Eucalyptus Rainforest. Enjoy the stunning 90 - 100 degree ocean views of Hawaii Island's Western Coastline, as well as the new Volcanic Vent (Known as Fissure 8) created by the 2018 Eruption of the Kileaua Volcano. The Hawaii Volcano National Park (HVNP) is a 14 mile or 20 minute drive from our campsite. HVNP has a visitor's center to get information about the park, hiking trails throughout its boundaries, steam vents and the awe-inspiring caldera, which is the location of the volcano's lava pool. At night, the glow from the lava in the caldera can be seen at the park. Our campsite is also an 18 mile or 29 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport and the town of Hilo, Hawaii.

We are a small 5 acre farmstead located on the beautiful Hamakua Coast. Our farm is home to a variety of animals and boasts numerous fruit trees. Enjoy the country life in Kau on the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 19 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there, but you don’t need 4WD to get to our place, but you do need to rent an SUV or truck with high clearance. No sedans. Go slow the road is rough and bumpy in places.. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is a gas grill and propane single burner. Bathroom has manual flush toilet,. This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. You can charge your phone and have a lamp in your cabin. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and T-Mobile work here also. The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! Our glamping cabins are in the front 3 acres. The back 17 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

2 nights at The Tranquil Homestead

We loved every bit of Christopher and Esther’s place! We thought about camping but are so glad we stayed here. The cabin is dialed in, with thoughtful features throughout. The hosts are as thoughtful as any we’ve ever had on Hipcamp or AirBnb. A perfect blend of friendly but giving lots of privacy. It was about 25 minutes to Hawaii Volcanos NP, close enough to make a late dash to see the lava! Highly recommended place to stay.

The communal picnic table is the spot to read books, draw tarot cards, create art, and chat at your leisure.

Weekend Trip to 🌈 Rainbow’s End Farm & Homestead!

We enjoyed our comfy bed and deck perch in the jungle. The open kitchen was lovely to cook in. Wendy was away, but communication was excellent, and the caretakers were available, helpful and welcoming. We were driving a Honda Fit with very low clearance, so we drove the rocky road VERY slowly, and planned to come and go only once a day (we spent two nights). I would stay there again for sure, but only if I had a vehicle with higher clearance.

Weekend Trip to Ohia Hale

This is nice land to stay on, if you’re lucky and the sky is clear at night the stars are unREAL. Colin was very responsive and helpful. It’s a bring your own everything type of place, but there is a portapotty that works just fine for what you need it for (hasn’t been serviced in a while but it was perfectly functional and not gross. There’s a beach with a shower not too far away so that’s helpful! There are pigs roaming around the shadows at night but none bothered us or came near our camp while we were outside. We really liked our stay and would stay again and recommend to folks that can handle the minimal amenities like we can. Thanks Colin!!

Weekend Trip to Sunrise Cabanas Panoramic Views

This was our second early-December stay here. The property is in an excellent location above Naalehu, is easy to find, and has spectacular views of the surrounding hillside and ocean. Brian, the onsite manager, was responsive and friendly, and made us feel welcome. The cabins are cute and clean, and the crickets and coqui frogs serenaded us to sleep. The outdoor shower is private and clean, and has plenty of hot water. This is a simple little gem of a place, and we would definitely stay here again.

1 night at IO's NEST LOOKOUT on the Hamakua

We loved Krystle's IO's Nest! It was comfortable, adorable, and atop a hill with spectacular views of the hillside looking down to the ocean from the spacious deck. The sunrise was incredible! The private outdoor shower was amazing and had mood lights, soap/shampoo, and flowers peaking under the bottom of the walls. It was an easy 20 minute walk to Akaka Falls, and there was a fruit stand just outside the first gate where we bought star fruit and coconut from the neighbor. The place was easy to find, and Krystle was an excellent host. She answered all our questions promptly, and made us feel welcome and comfortable. The Nest had electricity, cell service, wifi, an electric kettle and tea, coffee maker with coffee and filters, and a large charging station with USB and AC outlets. There was also a covered parking area right next to the Nest for our motorcycles. We would definitely stay here again!

We loved staying at Wendy’s! She was an incredibly generous host and communicated really well. As soon as we landed in Kona, she let us know that a volcano was fountaining, told us to head straight there, and had no issues with our late check-in as a result! Literally a once in a lifetime opportunity we would have missed if not for Wendy. The space itself was beautiful. Wendy’s property is gorgeous and she gave us a lovely tour of all the fruit trees she’s planted. The little cabin we stayed in was cozy and we loved having breakfast out in the deck. If we’re ever in the area again, we’d stay at Wendy’s in a heartbeat.

Weekend Trip to Moon Garden Getaway

Me and my sister decided to camp around the Big Island for a week instead of a hotel. We were very excited to arrive at Mae’s campsite and she was an amazing host. Her place was very easy to find with her instructions and she greeted us upon arrival. She showed us around the place and provided a book of recommendations for local places. She also offered us fruit off of her farm and there were a few fun games there. The campsite is beautiful and she had a very nice dog that was fun to hang out with. Overall 10/10.

Bumpy road up for us in a sprinter van but slow and steady made it happen no problem. Colin was available and super helpful navigating us up and even telling us the best way to park our large van. Susan stopped by to quickly tell us about the critters and plants nearby which was fun to learn about. The toilets were not available as they hadn't been serviced so ask ahead if that’s a need for your stay. Overall a peaceful stay. Thanks Colin and Susan!
