Yip Camp provides a setting that promotes immersion in nature. The property is located on the Kilauea Volcano at about 2700 feet in elevation and in sight of the majestic Mauna Loa volcano rising at the peak at 13,680 feet. Both volcanos have been active recently. There are several trails at the National Park nearby; trails and several species of birds live on the property including Japanese Pheasants. On clear nights the skies provide excellent ambient viewing of the moon, planets and constellations. The campsites and cottage are located in the woods near a shower and flushing toilet and the property is off grid with the goal to establish an example of sustainable lifestyles and ecosystems. Camping equipment is available upon request and the cottage is furnished with a basic kitchen. The grounds also include a screen room with a grill, tables, chairs and a fire pit. Local fruits and vegetables are grown on the property and the greenhouse provides food. Solitude is available for those who seek silence and immersion in nature and a number of state and county beaches are within a forty minute drive. The focus is providing a quiet environment and an opportunity for solitude away from the distractions of urban lifestyles. Beaches are about forty five minutes and the drive to Hilo is about 25 miles.

We're at the end of a 3 mile long unpaved road, so we are very secluded and have little outside noise. We are not a bed and breakfast, we are not a farm, we are not a place looking to rent cabins -- we are an intentional community and Permaculture homestead whose primary mission is healing, activating, and living our holistic hearts in multigenerational bonded community. Peaceful breezes and warming sun make for unparalleled tranquility. Today the land still gives back to its visitors. Come recharge. As this is agricultural lands, there are many critters. Dogs, chickens, pheasants, peacock, mongoose, and many birds. Tge invasive coqui frog is annoying to some and calming to others. The micro climate here swings from warm and dry to wet quickly. Best to always prepare for rain. There is snorkeling, beaches, local food, Cafe, BBQ, poke, fish-n-chips, grocery, Sunday farmers market and hiking nearby. It is peaceful here, but also an active farming community. As an organic farm, we put alot of effort into soil building and as such, there are soft places that will be damaged by the weight of a vehicle. Staying on the driveway is best. We will guide you to where you need to go. Our road is paved, but bumpy. Any vehicle will make it without damage if driven slowly. 1 to 4mph tops. *Be sure to avoid the camper rental companies that restrict certain roads. Aloha and have a great day.

11. Manukā State Wayside

Manukā State Wayside is a rest stop area with an opportunity to chow down at picnic tables amongst native and introduced trees. To walk off your mean feed of spam musubi, there is a short two mile nature hike available at the adjacent Manuka Natural Area Reserve. Should you decide to camp or just have more time to explore,the reserve features 25,000 acres and a variety of natural habitats including subalpine shrublands and forests, mesic montane kipuka forests, wet montane forests, lowland mesic forests and lowland dry forests. Recent lava flows have created unsurveyed lava tubes, and it’s not unusual to spot a cloud of Hawaiian hoary bat. Please come prepared to supply your own drinking water.

A lava-covered coastal park, Kīholo State Park Reserve features small bays, sparsely vegetated coastline, historic lava flows, and plenty of wide open space to roam. If you’ve never visited a black sand beach, you’ll have the chance to see it here, pressed up and contrasting against lush palm trees and shoreline. It’s a pretty decent spot for snorkeling too. While the park is still undergoing conceptual planning for future public use, visitors are able to visit during the day. Overnight camping is offered in a more remote area. Please be prepared with your own drinking water. Dehydration is so not a good look for you.

Thomas was incredibly accommodating as we booked this cabin last minute so that we could spend more time on the east side of the Big Island without having to drive back to Kona. He was there to greet us in the evening when we arrived after a day at the park, and was there to send us off as we continued on our journey in the morning. This cabin provides more of a camping feel as the property is off the grid, but you'll find all the essentials such as a full sized bed, linens, warm shower and a toilet. If you're like me and attract mosquitos, bringing a mosquito net may be useful as well.

Me and my sister decided to camp around the Big Island for a week instead of a hotel. We were very excited to arrive at Mae’s campsite and she was an amazing host. Her place was very easy to find with her instructions and she greeted us upon arrival. She showed us around the place and provided a book of recommendations for local places. She also offered us fruit off of her farm and there were a few fun games there. The campsite is beautiful and she had a very nice dog that was fun to hang out with. Overall 10/10.

The pros: affordable, beautiful area, nice glamping cabanas, well set up for cooking (big bbqs!), coolers and towels to take to the beach, picking fresh lillikoi in the morning, overall a really lovely stay. The cons: the shared space vibe was a little strange because they were overstaffed with volunteers, so it felt a bit like a youth hostel. It made it feel like guests were intruding on the volunteer hostel vibe and often the kitchen was occupied.

Other sites and adventures include Umauma Zip lining and Botanical World Adventures (5 miles away), Onomea Bay scenic drive and Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden (8 miles away), the historic town of Honokaa (45 mins), and the beautiful cowboy town of Waimea (1 hour). Hakalau Springs Campground sits on 11 acres with two springs bordering the property with a variety of fruit trees and farm animals to interact with. We offer basic campsites with picnic tables, drinking water, a fire pit, a composting toilet, and a pop-up tent in case it rains. You will be camping on soft grass amongst giant Ironwood and eucalyptus trees while listening to the soft sounds of the creek below. Take a swim in the spring-fed waterfall swimming hole and relax by the fire pit at night. We also offer our beautiful 2 room tent fully furnished with a queen-sized air mattress, cozy bedding, lantern, and camping lounge chairs. Cooler upon request, you provide the ice. We’re blessed to be located on the rainy side of the island because of all the abundance and greenery the rain brings. That being said, please be prepared for the weather. It can rain hard at times so having a good rain jacket is a great idea. On the other hand, people say that a sunny day on the east side of the big island is the best place to be in all of Hawaii. Camp under a starry sky with an unobstructed view of Mount Kilauea across a vast and bare moon-like landscape. Fire pit with a grill for cooking, benches, and a beautiful new composting toilet structure made from local albizia, ohia, and guava wood. Mostly hot and sunny, with occasional rain. Access to Volcanoes National Park and Kehena Beach. Learn more about this land: Lava covered the site on 5 September 1990, after more than a thousand years of peaceful fertility. The flow met the Hakuma horst and was diverted north, filling the village of Kalapana and the beautiful Kaimu Bay. Lava continued to flow in the area for another 20 years, until 2011. We are restoring the fertility by bringing in mulch and soil and planting coconuts, mango trees, moringa, plumeria, figs, dragonfruits, and more. Near the camp sites we've recently constructed a house out of local wood; it provides some shelter from the nearly constant trade winds. Premium strawberry guava BBQ firewood can be purchased by prior arrangement. There's a shower with cold water; it doesn't get very cold! 1 mile from ocean cliffs, 2 miles to a basic grocery store and a great weekly farmers market, 2.5 miles to Volcanoes National Park, 5 miles to Kehena public black sand beach at the base of the cliffs, with a community drum circle on Sundays. Welcome to the wild coast of South Puna! Optionally produce from our nearby rainforest garden. We may offer guided tours to local historical caves and bicycle trips to hidden beaches deep inside Volcanoes National Park.

Aloha and welcome to Silver Oak Sunsets, a 5 acre agriculture farm and family plot situated in the Kona Coffee Belt on the western slopes of Hualalai Mountain in Kona, Hawai'i. With great stargazing opportunities, the camping area where is located on the top two acres of the property at 2000ft elevation above sea level. This area is an open grassy (mowed) area surrounded with avocado, kukui nut and silver oak trees. This area boasts some of the best ocean, coastline, and sunset views in Kona! The bottom 3 acres are where my family and I reside. Conveniently located just 10 minutes from Kona International Airport, 15 minutes to the beach, 5 minutes to the nearest golf course, gas station, and grocery store, Silver Oak Sunsets campsite is secluded yet close to everything Kona. Our seasonal changes are mild compared to the continental US. Summer months (May-September) are warmer and with more rain and the winters (Nov-April) are cooler and drier with temperatures dipping to the low 50's. You and your family will have this campsite all to yourselves as Silver Oak Sunsets has just one campsite. Our family plot is located on the top acre in an area known fondly as Grandma's Garden. Provided for your camping experience are the following amenities: *Portable toilet and toilet paper (this full size portable toilet is pumped every 1-2 weeks and is thoroughly wiped down and cleaned before and after each visit) *Outdoor hot shower using Camplux propane water heater *Cold water sink *Water spigot *Large picnic table *Propane fire pit Sights and sounds you will likely encounter: *Coqui frogs (mostly at night, especially during rainy season) *Roosters and hens (will let you know that the sun is rising) *Dog's barking (heard in the distance) *Vehicle traffic (heard in the distance) *A beautiful sunset Other sight's and sounds you may encounter: *Turkey's and Kalij Pheasant's walking about and napping *Hawk's flying overhead *Wild boar (grazing at night) Note that boars do not typical attack, especially in unprovoked. *Mongoose (Hawai'i's version of a squirrel) They are not friendly but mind themselves. *My family and I landscaping and farming.
