The best mountainous camping near Silverton

·

This historic mining town is set in the heart of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Unlike most other Colorado mountain towns, Silverton has largely escaped upscale development. A National Historic Landmark, the town is essentially frozen in time and its rich mining history and old west charm are still palpable. Silverton makes an excellent basecamp for hiking and off-roading adventures into the surrounding high country, and campers can find several national forest campgrounds nearby, as well as dispersed camping options. Several RV parks are located right in town.

Elk are in rut and you can hear them bugling from your campsite. The aspen groves are peaking and we’re surrounded by orange scrub oak for fall. Oh, we have views! You may have a campfire and we have free wood! We also have delicious duck eggs! A beautiful 40 acre ranch on Hastings Mesa with views of Alder Canyon and Hayden’s Peak. You can hear Alder Creek flowing through the canyon from the comfort of your campsite. Many nearby options for bicycling, hiking, kayaking and skiing in the area. Once you pull out the driveway you are a few minutes from Last Dollar Ranch Road (hike, bike, or 4x4) and about a 25 minute drive to Telluride, 30 minutes to Ridgway, and 30 minutes to Norwood. Just outside of Ridgway is Orvis Hot Springs, and more hot springs can be found in Ouray. The property offers access to Alder Creek and our beaver ponds down in the canyon. The fields are blanketed with Iris and clematis flowers in May and June and other wild flowers throughout the summer including pentstemon, larkspur, and wild roses. There are patches of scrub oak and fields with cinquefoil bushes in the camping areas, and as you go down in the canyon there’s aspen groves, blue spruce, and ponderosa pines. We bought a school house! Our long-term plan is to build out a full campground on the property, but in the interim we will be offering boondocking. While we are under construction on the outdoor space, the main building that we have converted into a coworking space is available for our guests to use from the hours of 9AM - 6PM. Unfortunately, we are on old agricultural land so the sites are in the direct sun during the day. Please be aware that it gets hot out here in the summer and take this into consideration when booking your stay with us. Please note that there is only one camping structure allowed per site (one tent, one rv, one van, etc.). Since we are under construction we ask that you use caution when pulling into the lot. Miller Flats is a privately own home on 40 acres bordered on 4 sides by Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Powderhorn Wilderness is literally in the back yard. You will find hiking and biking trails plentiful. The Lake Fork of the Gunnison River is just across the street, with public access just two miles away. If you are looking for Jeep or ATV trails, they are less than a mile down the road. We are twenty miles from the spectacular Alpine Loop! And twenty-five miles from Blue Mesa Reservoir. Tent sites include a firepit, and flat spot for tent. Water and electricity are available at the well house, but not the tent sites. Each campsite has a five gallon bucket of water, a camp potty with a removable bag that you dispose. There may be an outdoor shower available for an extra fee. Please do not plan on using the firepit unless we have had recent rain and the camp host approves. The grass around the campsite is a wildfire waiting to happen since we have been in a severe drought since 2021. There is a pile of wood near the cabin driveway that you can use for campfires. Please make sure you have a way to extinguish your fire. The road to the tent sites is BLM. It is not gravel, it is dirt. My car can get to most sites, but the camp host can help haul gear if you don’t want to drive down it. I have had several sedans drive the road, but if you have a low profile vehicle we can tote your supplies. Also, in spring the road may be muddy. Please have a 4 wheel drive. Just send me a message and we will make it work for you. Satellite Wifi is available near the well house, but somewhat spotty. Not great for downloading movies or gaming. Some people get cell service at the top of the hill, but otherwise there is very little in the area. Your tent sites are arranged around the property next to the wilderness and a BLM trail. You will be able to drive there. There is a log home on the center of the property, about a quarter mile or more away from the tent sites. We rent the property and a third of the time we are living on premises. There are gardens, barn cats, dogs and we are hoping to add a horse and a fuzzy cow. There are outdoor living areas between the log home and your sites. If you are interested in more seclusion, please see the Private Valley campsite. The best mountainous camping near Silverton guide

Where to go

The Alpine Loop

Colorado’s Alpine Loop Scenic and Historic Byway traverses the mountainous landscape between Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton. A high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicle is necessary to make the 65-mile loop, but several ATV and jeep rental outfitters can be found in Silverton. The route passes numerous ghost towns, abandoned mines, viewpoints, and dispersed camping areas.

Along the Million Dollar Highway

This 25-mile stretch of highway from Silverton to Ouray is an attraction in itself. The road winds its way up Red Mountain Pass and then hugs a steep cliffside offering dramatic views at every turn. Several mining ruins can be spotted along the way, with numerous places to pull off and enjoy the views. The Million Dollar Highway also provides access to many of the San Juan Mountain’s most popular trails including one to Ice Lakes Basin and its South Mineral Campground, one of the area’s most scenic camp spots.

Ouray

Known as the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray is an old western town nestled into a narrow box canyon. It’s a bit more developed than Silverton and has a ton more camping, lodging, and dining options. Hikers can connect to the Ouray Perimeter Trail right from town for views of the city and then continue on to Box Canyon Falls, an impressive waterfall surrounded by towering cliffs.

When to go

June through September is high time in Silverton, when most snow has melted in the high country and trails, peaks, and backcountry roads are most easily accessible. The Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run brings hundreds of mountain running enthusiasts to the area in July, and wildflowers put on one of the best shows in Colorado in the Silverton Mountains late in the month. Winter draws hardcore recreationists for some of Colorado’s steepest lift-served, backcountry, and helicopter skiing.

Know before you go

  • Only a handful of national forest campgrounds sit near Silverton and most are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrive early in the day for the best chance at a spot.
  • Ouray’s Amphitheater Campground is one of the few national forest campgrounds that can be reserved in advance. Sites book quickly but you may have luck if you check the reservation website for cancellations.
  • Dispersed campsites line both the South Mineral Fork Road and Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, but make sure you understand the rules before you camp. Always pack out all your trash and keep an eye on campfire restrictions.
