2 nights at Gem of the Bend (Horses welcome)

My husband and I took our two horses to Daniel’s camp and had the most amazing time! We stayed two nights and spent the days riding through the Los Padres National Forest. The views are spectacular and you can tell how much he cares about the land and his property. Daniel also told us about the trails behind the property and where to go for the best sunset views! We were able to park a three horse gooseneck with mid tack and weekender into the site without a problem, but anything bigger may take some creative backing or not fit. He had water available for the horses which was also a huge plus! This is an amazing gem of a find and we can’t wait to go back!

3 nights at Spirit Walk - Private Retreat

There were tons of great camp sites on spirit camp. John greeted us (even tho we arrived 10 min to 9pm) , gave us a tour and was very grounding every time we spoke. There are trees around for hanging up hammocks if you’d like , and you can cool off in the outdoor shower! We were able to stretch a bundle of wood for two nights. The kitchen is well equipped , and well protected with bear box’s and bear safe trash bins. Overall it was a great place to camp and in a convenient location. heads-up — on the entrance to the property, there is a dirt road. Although it’s maintained there is a dip, not too much of a worry for compact suvs , but if you have a sedan it’s something to be mindful of if you arrive at night.

Daniel was an amazing host! He took the time to go over all of the beautiful nearby trails upon our arrival and made sure we had everything new needed for a comfortable stay. The site was beautiful-a stones throw from endless exploration of the Los Padres. The views of the stars were incredible. There was even an observatory next door. We will definitely be back! ❤️

Our family and friends loved the song dog ranch double fire site. We loved the space/the privacy/ and the soaking tub. The kids enjoyed hiking/ playing in the tub. The ranch is very well cared for and beautiful! We will definitely be back.

2 nights at Cuyama Badlands

2nd time here! Our absolute favorite campground so far that we have tried with Hip Camp. But we did enjoy our first trip back in Spring more than during now in the Summer. We will definitely be back when the wildflowers are back and the wind isn’t as crazy. We spent the entire time fighting off strong gushes of wind all day that covered everyone and everything in dust all day long but that is not fault of the campground. All part of the experience! Can’t wait to be back with more friends!

14 nights at Bare All Retreat

June 2025 25ft Travel Trailer We had an amazing time camping at Bear all Retreat. Corey’s place is 130 plus acres of pure-outdoor bliss. Creek with clear streaming water, amazing views, starry nights and campfires right outside our door. Free range cows, horses, goats, pigs, and chickens, greeted us daily and provided us with entertainment. The family dogs came to visit often hanging out with us keeping us safe and our dog enjoyed making new friends. We hiked and walked on trails collecting pinecones, pine nuts, watercress and fell asleep to the chorus of the frogs in the creek. Corey’s wife Alicia and kids were so kind and gracious sharing with us fresh farm eggs, goats milk, points of interest around the area and pleasant conversation. Camping the way it is ment to be, cant speak highly enough of this hidden gem. We will surely be returning to Bear all Retreat to clear our mind and soul while camping and hiking in the great our doors.

3 nights at Sleepy Meadow Ranch

Tent camping on the land was beautiful, thankfully our group had the place to ourselves! Loved the privacy and secluded land. Walking the dirt road neighborhood streets was a great exercise without going far. Our dogs loved the off leash opportunity. We will absolutely visit the land again. Only con our party had was we booked for 3 nights and didn't realize the porta potty was already pretty full, however it didn't smell and was very clean. Next time we do hope to have an emptier potty or access to both.

The site was lovely, spaced out from other people with a gorgeous sunset and great stargazing. It was windy when I drove in, so Jenny let me switch to the lower sites. I love the shade, fire pit, and outhouse set up. A great spot just north of the Los Padres Forest.

Our camp area is right next to our home. We live on 2 acres which is apart of our families 500 acre ranch and home to a summer camp and retreats. There are nice hiking trails we can direct you to as long as the National Forest isn't closed. Our space isn’t huge and we are working on making it more private but you are welcome to come stay here...we are happy to share. We live in a remote area and its beautiful and quiet. There is a local town 6 miles down the road that has several places to eat and one small place to get some grocery. This property that we live on has been lived on now by 4 generations. My grandpa bought this land with his brother in 1940s. His brother eventually sold his portion leaving my grandpa with a little over 500 acres... In 1934 he and my grandma started a winter program with only a few kids which eventually became a summer program for children with about 90 children every two weeks. This year would have been our 86th summer of children's camp run by our Third generation of Jamesons ( due to COVID, we were forced to cancel for the first time this year). For our summer children camp program, there are many fun things on the property to do including a pool, lake, horse program and so much more. We also run retreats off and on year round on the main property and offer a wide variety of things for our clients. Due to COVID, and the strange year had, we thought that this would help us gain a little of our money lost as well as meet some really cool travelers along the way. We call this God's country because it is a unique and beautiful peace of land, even in the driest of moments. And...there is beautiful manzanita trees all over property. We personally live 1/2 mile from the main part of the property Jameson Ranch, where the summer camp is held. I love to garden and are in the process of expanding our portion of the property to putting in fruit orchards and berry bushes. Our whole property also borders the Sequoia National Forest and there are some fun walking trails around there. For any sites located south of Ballinger Wash, your vehicle length is limited to 22' and no more than 4' overhang from the rear axle, so you don't get stuck in the crossing and block access for others. Towing services are 1-3 hours away. Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets and amazing stargazing. These UPPER SITES are NOT OHV friendly, but any of our canyon bottom sites are a great base for your riding adventures up in Ballinger Canyon OHV. We'll be happy to recommend a site for you. **Forest Service law enforcement is actively ticketing unplated OHV on Ballinger Canyon Road. We are situated in a canyon with a creek running down the middle which offers a seasonal pond to swim in as well. There is room to hike and explore but campers must stay on our property as we are surrounded on three sides by Tejon Ranch land. Tejon ranch is the largest land owner in Kern county and covers 270,000 acres. On our fourth side to the east we have a wind mill park that supplies power to the grid. Our property is completely off the grid so be prepared to be self sufficient. There is plenty of water but no dump station. Underworld Farms is a small goat ranch in the Kern River Valley. Surrounded by forestry land, on the Kern River, and on top of what used to be the old town of Whiskey Flat (Later re-named Kernville). There is no end to the beauty, history and adventure all around the property. Life took us to the Kern River Valley after moving out of Los Angeles. We enjoy living in the Southern Sierras immersed in all its natural beauty. The small but magnificent town of Kernville is approximately two and a half miles north of us. Our livestock includes horses, dairy goats, sheep, and rabbits: Most of which are raised and bred as our son's 4H or FFA projects. You may be wondering why our farm is called "Underworld Farms". In a nutshell, since our ranch is on the footprint of the historic town of Whiskey Flat, we just happen to be south of the old Whiskey Flat "Boot Hill" Cemetery. Our "driveway" is the road that led from the old town of Kernville to the cemetery. We hope that you consider parking your RV, van conversion, or trailer on one of our customized spots on the property. Or drive your vehicle and pitch a tent on one of our tent friendly sports. Or enjoy a stay in one of our small cabins. Regardless of what you stay in, you will definitely have a memorable time. The campground is VERY barebones and rural. Critters, bugs, and sometimes fellow Hipcampers can be sparce or prevalent pretty randomly. Because Underworld Farms is a working ranch, you will probably hear livestock noises like horses neighing, sheep and goats calling, and our protector dogs barking from time to time. We encourage you to walk over to the horses and goats and meet them. They especially like when you bring them carrots or apple pieces. The ranch has a double outhouse with a hand washing station sandwiched in between, it is rustic and bare bones. We check it to see if it has paper products, soap, water, and plenty of room in the trash bins. During the hotter months, the "daddy longleg" spiders enjoy infiltrating the outhouses and seem to spin new webs overnight. But they and their webs are harmless and easy to brush off. We ask for your assistance if there is something missing, or the trash needs taking out, or if the spiders have taken over again by getting ahold of us through the Hipcamp App and letting us know. With all that being said, there is an ambient beauty here that is unbelievable and memorable. This beauty and draw is so powerful that it causes the many people who come visit to make arrangements to live in our little valley. There is much to do in and around our valley that you couldn't do it all in a lifetime. We hope that you come and stay at the ranch while enjoying our valley. They would live here in the winter, and spend the summers hunting and gathering pine nuts and acorns up in the Tehachapi and San Gabriel mountains. This region is called the Antelope Valley because there used to be antelope-looking creatures called pronghorns.My first trip out here was to watch the Blood Wolf Moon lunar eclipse of 2019. It didn't disappoint! This is the spot to come look at the stars, howl at the moon, eat jerky, draw weird cactus trees in your sketch book, whatever!Learn more about this land:Joshua trees 50 miles closer to LA than the Joshua Tree National Park!This is 2.5 acres of protected Joshua Tree lands in the Antelope Valley north of LA, between the snowy Tehachapi Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. You'll probably see the Milky Way! It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately.It feels like the wild west out here, and that's the main appeal--no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation--it's the edge of the desert wilderness. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself!This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There are no designated sites, so pick whatever looks good to you. We often have multiple parties at once, so feel free to spread out.This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels.The property itself is along a dirt road called Avenue C. It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. It's also a few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies.If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! Old West Mountain Camping Near LA!

Learn more about this land:A vast expanse of oak trees, California Junipers and rugged, mountainous land running with jackrabbits, quail, and owls that is just 3 miles from Vazquez Rocks and the PCT, our ranch transports you. From the tent campsite, you look out for 20 miles and see nothing but nature across small mountains and canyons all the way to the peaks of Angeles National Forest in the distance. The campsite is a large flat area. For a trailer or RV it's a great place to park and the view is towards wide open spaces. With a tent or if you want more pure nature, you can drive out onto the property further towards the small ruin of the old homesteader's cabin or beyond. The property has a long-abandoned gold mine and circular arrastres where miners used mules to break up rocks. Nearby Acton has pick-your-own apples/pears/peaches at Bloom farms. We are at 3000 feet with strong sun during the day and cool mountains air at night. The camping is set away from structures, but if you want to stroll, closer to the ranch buildings, we have friendly small goats you can visit if interested and horses and a donkey to say hello to across the corral fence.

Antelope Canyon Ranch

The Ranch has many varied sites to explore from oak woodlands to pine covered woods. The ownership of the land has been held since 1883 by the Summit Lime Company and was until the 1930's the site of several lime quarries one of which was used to supply material for the Owens valley to Los Angeles aquaduct. Current utilization is for recreation, private hunting club, timber production, and cattle grazing. The campground was built in 1967 to provide a location for church, non-profit, and youth groups to enjoy a private, and safe location for outdoor recreation activities. Camping is restricted to family and group activities. The campground has 17 sites a comfort station, water hook-ups, fire ring, and 4X8 foot stone BAR-B-Que. In order to provide a private experience no two groups are scheduled at the same time. An ideal group size is 15 to 150 persons.
