River Ridge Institute, our non-profit, hosts a variety of events for the public.
Please note: you are expected to leave the ranch and kitchen area as you found it, i.e., dishes washed thoroughly and dried and put away, recycling separated from trash, food scraps in compost buckets, sticky marshmallow removed from forks and surfaces (ick!). Thank you.
Enjoy: The Kitchen has a 3-burner cooktop, large fridge, microwave, full dishes and utensils and pots and pans with a big washing area in the back. Propane barbecue grill.. Ancestral land of the Foothill Yokuts tribe. Homesteaded in 1859, owned by the Negus family from 1909-2000. Barbara and I bought it to save it from subdivision and it's now protected by a Conservation Easement and acts as a community center for the arts, music, poetry, gatherings and outdoor education. We're both biologists, so, just ask us.

Our home is 1622 sq ft with plenty of space to make yourself comfortable. As you walk into our home, you will see our open living room and oversized couch. You’ll then see our kitchen and dining room immediately. Our kitchen table seats 4, and we have 2 barstools in the kitchen for the bar area. Down the hallway, you’ll see our first bedroom with a Queen-size bed, the laundry room, and a hallway bathroom. Then straight ahead you’ll see our master bedroom with a bathroom, a walk-in closet, and a full bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub. Our home does have AC/Heating by mini split units that are all new & purchased & installed in June 2022 and are maintained monthly.
We also have 2 twin folding beds that can be set up in either bedroom or the living room. Purchased in August 2022 for additional sleeping.
Ring cameras are located on the outside of the property. No cameras are inside.
Enjoy a nice evening on the front patio, enjoying nature.

Absolutely no smoking on the property. Wildfires are common in the area. Three Rivers is a very high-risk area. Three Rivers has faced evacuation warnings in both 2020 & 2021 due to local raging wildfires.

Location: we are located in Kernville, just a 5 to 8-minute walk from the Kern River, next door to the Kern River Brewing Company, across from the Sierra Gateway Market, and up the street from Pizza Barn and the Kern River Fly Shop. The Squattage was great to stay at and James and Diane were amazing hosts. We were nervous about the heat but the Squattage was equipped with an AC unit and fans. Definitely recommend if you're looking to get away from for a bit.

Weekend Trip to Sequoia Secluded Escape
VERY awesome experience. The cabin was super cool and well taken care of, the instructions for everything were VERY helpful and Kiley was super quick to respond and help us when we had any questions. Also, I thought that it was going to be further from the actual park but not a bad drive at all! 10/10 would highly recommend to anyone taking a trip to sequoia.

We love this camp and the cabins we stayed at.
The thought put into building the cabins in an eco-friendly manner, the cozy lighting, the coffee provisions and their charm made us a repeat visitor. If adults need a summer camp, I would recommend grabbing your group of friends and coming here. We enjoyed the stargazing site, the sunset spot, the naps in the hammocks, the fire pit at sunset and the rec house for group activities. The host were generous and easy to communicate with.
The amount of biodiversity among which we got to stay made it more enchanting. We ran into some deer and foxes enroute to the cabins. The mature oaks, the mistletoes, the oak galls, the hawks, the flannel bush, the manzanitas, the wild flowers, the wild oats and the grazing cows made it a joy to wander around. The land has some interesting rocks if you are into geology. It was easy to give kids a check list and set them on a treasure hunt to occupy them.
Access to nature, a cabin and good coffee was the solution we needed and found it here.

Finding this place was such a gift.
I wanted to explore the Tule River and have a camp like experience with my son. I was able to simply arrive, settle in, and enjoy the grounds. Having access to the kitchen, stove, and refrigerator made everything so much easier and meant we didn't have to pack nearly as much. It took so much stress off my nervous system and allowed me extra time to connect with my son and nature.
The cabin was quaint and thoughtfully cared for. You can feel the intention behind this place, everything has been created with simplicity, care, and respect for the land. I really feel like I found a pocket of peace. Looking forward to checking out the cow pasture and star gazing next time. Thank you Gary, sincerely.

We loved this place. My 4 year old had a blast wondering around the camp. The river with a private beach is amazing.
The cabin was super nice, very quiet, very secluded.
The full kitchen and refrigerator was also a nice touch.
Great base camp. The camp has WiFi so that’s nice. Close to town and right off the 190. We will be back for sure

Cabin was great, right next to several other cabins and the toilet, not too far from the communal kitchen. Beds were comfy and clean. We were a little spooked by the baby rattlesnakes that are prevalent this time of year, but it's high enough to be slightly cooler than the rest of the valley and see the stars.

We loved the place, it is under a new management so there were some hiccups but overall it is a great place to stay, just 24 minutes away from Big stump and has pretty lake with canoe availble. enroute you can even see the local birds and animals.

Weekend Trip to The Squattage in the Sequoia National Forest!
The Squattage was a cute place to stay and so close to gorgeous trails! the owners put a lot of love and attention to detail in the cabin. They even provided an aluminum pan, tongs, and a pot had for cooking on the propane fire which we really appreciated! It's a nice mix of being in nature, but still being a part of a community with a great general store an easy walk down the street.
