Just outside California City, there are miles of roads for the off-road enthusiast and some of the best stargazing in California. (As the Mayor once said, you can see more stars in California City then you could in Los Angeles). There is also great rockhounding and hiking opportunities! I have 21 acres of raw land, plus another 2.5 acres further north. I have personally camped on it a couple of times. The majority of the land is flat with sagebrush and rises about 15 feet at one end. It is a pie-shaped piece of property; the point area is the highest part and offers great views from the top. All of the land is extremely quiet.
There are hard-packed DG roads leading all the way to the property (see maps). The property sits approximately 1/4 mile from Point “B” on the California City Off-Road Vehicle Trails—straight down Temple Road from the property to Point B. California City does require permits for off-road riding. If you choose not to ride, the property is very quiet and makes for a great getaway.
I use Cricket for cell service and get five bars out there. The property is also approximately 2.5 miles from Highway 395, yet I don’t see or hear anything from the highway.
There are no facilities on the property. Showers and dumping stations are located further down Twenty Mule Team Road, approximately 10–15 miles away (not exactly sure). There is a small store there as well. From the property to the center of California City is approximately 17 miles.
The ground is mostly decomposed granite with some small boulders and lots of sagebrush, usually spaced about 12 feet apart. Roads and trails run along all three sides of the property. At night, you can see practically every star in the sky—there’s no light pollution. When I was there, it was so quiet I had to turn on music at a low volume because otherwise it felt too quiet.

We had a wonderful stay at this RV park on Lake Olancha. What really stood out was how peaceful and secluded it felt—it never got too busy, which made it easy to truly relax and enjoy the surroundings.
One of our favorite perks was the easy, no-hassle access to boats and paddleboards. Being able to grab them anytime without needing to sign up or check in made the experience feel effortless and fun. Our twin 7-year-old boys especially loved exploring the area, and spotting frogs at night quickly became a highlight of the trip.
The location is also a big plus. It’s just a short drive to Lone Pine, with great access to hiking and the Alabama Foothills, making it a perfect base for outdoor adventures.
The office staff and host were warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful throughout our stay, which added to the welcoming atmosphere. And a small but important detail—the WiFi actually worked well, which is always appreciated when you’re on the road.
A couple of areas could use some improvement: the dock areas feel a bit outdated, and the zip line was unfortunately out of service during our visit. That said, these didn’t take away too much from an otherwise serene and enjoyable experience.
Overall, a peaceful, family-friendly spot that we’d happily return to.

Olancha Campground was easy to find and pull into our spot. After long days visiting Death Valley it was great to get back to the campground and play in the lake and walk around its perimeter. We saw lots of birds visiting the oasis including yellow headed black birds, road runners, and lots and lots of coots!

This is a nice little RV area. Be forewarned there is NOTHING nearby with less than a 30 minute drive and the RV sites are close together. However, it is a good place for an easy stop. I had a problem with my camper door, so I was only able to stay one of my three nights.

Stayed here with my small trailer and it was a great experience. Staff were super friendly and the views were great. Water and power easily accessible at the site and the grounds were well maintained and clean. Alabama hills isn’t too far of a drive if you want to get some hiking in and if you want to get to Death Valley it’s about an hour to an hour and a half. Took me 2ish hours to reach bad water basin which is deep in the park but there are closer attractions within the park. Over great experience even if you just want a place to rest and relax.

Such a great place to visit. I went in a camper and stayed in site #10. The site was clean and super quiet and peaceful. We used the paddle boards to go in the lake. My dogs enjoyed the lake as well. No one bothers you. You have an amazing view of the mountains and it’s just beautiful. Full hookups so that was a super plus. I definitely plan on going back soon. Must visit this site when you have a chance!

We made a day trek to death valley national park, which took about 2 hours from the site. The camp site was nice because it was quiet and not super busy. This was such a great spot for us to find when we changed our route last minute! It was a bit wet/chilly out so we didn’t use many of the amenities but the views were GREAT. We met Nacho on the way in and he even let us switch sites so we weren’t right next to anyone. I highly recommend this easy site!

We arrived at 9 PM at the campground and were pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by a helpful gentleman who pointed us to our spot. The spot had 100 A/50A/30A hookups, water hookup and also a full restroom (shared) nearby. The lake was serene in the morning. Conveniently located near the highway.
