The camping is set away from structures, but if you want to stroll, closer to the ranch buildings, we have friendly small goats you can visit if interested and horses and a donkey to say hello to across the corral fence.

My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. You'll probably see the Milky Way! It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately.It feels like the wild west out here, and that's the main appeal--no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation--it's the edge of the desert wilderness. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself!This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There are no designated sites, so pick whatever looks good to you. We often have multiple parties at once, so feel free to spread out.This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels.The property itself is along a dirt road called Avenue C. It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. It's also a few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies.If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! I had an absolutely wonderful and truly unique experience at Josh & Jessica’s Tent Camp @ Working Ostrich Ranch! From the moment I arrived, the hosts made me feel right at home. They were incredibly welcoming and went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable, offering clear instructions and being very accessible throughout my stay. Their attention to detail really showed, especially in how they prioritize the safety of the magnificent ostriches—this is definitely not a petting zoo! It's a real, working ranch, and the rules in the description are there to keep both guests and animals safe. The elder rancher is a fountain of knowledge—his stories and insights were fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him. It was clear that he has a deep respect and understanding of the land and animals. My campsite was tucked away in a peaceful corner by the archery range—an ideal spot for stargazing under the open sky and listening to the enchanting sounds of the surrounding wildlife. I loved the rustic charm of the site, which offered a sense of solitude while still feeling completely safe and well-maintained. I’m already planning to return for a longer stay next time. I’d love to take the ranch tour and maybe even try an archery lesson! If you're looking for a memorable and peaceful camping experience at an authentic working farm, I highly recommend this spot. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind HipCamp.

My sister and I enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were close to the site, there was so much to explore and they offer fun activities. The host was very kind. The views were immaculate and we loved seeing the ostriches before we went to bed and right when we woke up. This was such a pleasant experience, will definitely be coming back!

Weekend Trip to Star Ranch

This was such a great setup! We do not go camping often, so I wanted to book a spot that was between camping and “glamping”. This was that perfect inbetween! It does get pretty cold at night during the fall/winter, so make sure to pack plenty of extra layers and blankets. The campsite was very well taken care of, and there weren’t even any bugs inside the A frames. He even included a propane tank, which was great since we forgot to bring one! We had a lovely stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for camping near LA

Had a great time staying here with my family! Everything was so clean , there was cell service so that was nice ! Also some things to note there is a cooking area just no fridge so bring ice and a cooler! No water heater so the shower was cold but felt nice!!! There is a working toilet on site so that was amazing! Two A frames one with a king size bed which was very comfortable it can get windy throughout the day and night but honestly wasn’t a big deal. There’s a port to charge things and some night lights We brought a portable dvd player so once it got dark we were inside the A frame

The site is so great to go camping with a group. Some of us actually used our own tents, some who couldn’t handle the cold used the a-frames that are available. It was a nice little getaway from the cities and all the noise. The stars are sooo pretty at night. I brought my dogs and it was great, I didn’t have to worry about them at all, granted they are trained. They were wandering around and the site is far away from at street, that I let them do their own thing. The girls liked it so much, one of them is coming back with her family to enjoy the sight again.

This spot was chill! It’s easy to find, set up, and was a fun, novel stay! it was so quiet you could hear the birds flapping their wings and it was a lovely evening. A nice time out. No toilet paper in the bathroom, but not sure if that’s normal or was a mishap. Either way, all around a nice time. Thanks, Jessica and Josh!

Weekend Trip to Magic Portal Stargazer's Retreat

A beautiful spot with excellent views, and a pleasant surprise visit from some cattle on our way up to the location. I strongly suggest bringing something that can off-road a bit, it wasn't a rough drive, but I know my sedan would have gotten stuck or struggled toward the end. The provided outhouse is a welcome addition. It's a nice, quiet spot for a good getaway with a killer view of the stars all around.

This was a wonderful stay. Beautiful site. Hot outdoor showers for a small fee (what a treat in that setting!) clean toilets plus hot and cold running water close by. A nice little walking trail (about a mile) right there. And John was a great host, very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this site!

Super beautiful spot! The site itself is set up very cute and comfortable. It’s off-grid but still very usable. The site is magnificent. Beautiful rock mountains everywhere, gorgeous views, and so secluded. I suggest triple checking directions- the names of the streets on the maps do not coincide with the actual street names. So don’t follow the maps, follow the pictures, there are sand traps everywhere. The dome itself is also charming and all-in-all a total gem of a spot! We loved it.
