We opened our doors to the public in 2014 to help support feeding our animals, bred and rescued, after the Powerhouse Fire almost burned us out. We’ve survived a county quarantine(2018-2019), the COVID Lockdowns (2021-2022), the Lake Fire (2020), and the Hurricane Kay burn scar debris flow and flood (9/11/22), depending on hard work and strong family and community bonds. They would live here in the winter, and spend the summers hunting and gathering pine nuts and acorns up in the Tehachapi and San Gabriel mountains. This region is called the Antelope Valley because there used to be antelope-looking creatures called pronghorns.My first trip out here was to watch the Blood Wolf Moon lunar eclipse of 2019. It didn't disappoint! This is the spot to come look at the stars, howl at the moon, eat jerky, draw weird cactus trees in your sketch book, whatever!Learn more about this land:Joshua trees 50 miles closer to LA than the Joshua Tree National Park!This is 2.5 acres of protected Joshua Tree lands in the Antelope Valley north of LA, between the snowy Tehachapi Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. You'll probably see the Milky Way! It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately.It feels like the wild west out here, and that's the main appeal--no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation--it's the edge of the desert wilderness. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself!This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There are no designated sites, so pick whatever looks good to you. We often have multiple parties at once, so feel free to spread out.This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels.The property itself is along a dirt road called Avenue C. It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. It's also a few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies.If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! ***Some things to please be aware of:
- This is off grid camping! No markers or specifically defined campsites are present, we provide exact GPS coordinates. All sites are dispersed camping in the wildflower fields! We intentionally leave the property unaltered to preserve the raw natural beauty.
- Our site is about 2 miles from the nearest paved road (HWY 138) It’s all dirt roads to get here off of HWY 138, through the hills. For years we have found 2WD is more than sufficient to get here, as long as you drive slow, and don't stop on hills you should be fine. However, some campers have found that not to be the case for them and wanted 4WD, so come prepared either way.
- If you are unfamiliar navigating using GPS coordinates or with off grid camping, our location may be hard to find and may not be a good fit for you.
- It can get very windy sometimes so come prepared to snuggle up in the back of your car or camper and enjoy the stunning stars, sunrises, sunsets and views.
- It is considerably easier to navigate with a little daylight.
- We are happy to provide you with a map as well upon request, which seems to be the most direct route.

The title says it all this property is truly A Unique Mountain Retreat that will give you the peace, quiet and tranquility you are looking for.
An energy efficient Uniquely designed home that is off the grid and has a very green footprint with solar and windmill to charge batteries. Oak and pine tree covered acres with fitness and nature trails around the property. Each level campsite with picnic table is designed for privacy with plenty of distance between sites and mountain views in every direction, along with an optional gas log fire pit and BBQ.
There is plenty of clean, non potable drinking water, custom built toilets and optional hot showers, limited electrical use, cell phone charging and low power use devices as I am off grid. There is a fitness and nature trail on the property and Pacific Crest trail is approx 20 to 30 min drive, Mountain park which has many miles of hiking trails and an Indian reservation with hikes to many petroglphs. Things to see are the World famous Tehachapi railway loop, historic downtown, vineyards, mountain spirit center a Buddhist temple, glider rides, bicycle riding and fishing.
There is cell service around the property but intermittent at the campsites.

Run by three generations, our ranch has been in our family for more than 70 years. We opened our doors to the public in 2014 to help support feeding our animals, bred and rescued, after the Powerhouse Fire almost burned us out. We’ve survived a county quarantine(2018-2019), the COVID Lockdowns (2021-2022), the Lake Fire (2020), and the Hurricane Kay burn scar debris flow and flood (9/11/22), depending on hard work and strong family and community bonds. In addition to camping and educational tours, we host private and community events, grow and sell produce and eggs, hatch and sell chicks, rescue ratites, and support the local bee population (which gives us RAW honey to sell), and are working to open a private U-pick-by-appointment orchard. We are all animal lovers, and conservationists, and try to do our part to ensure our children inherit a healthy and viable world. This is our home where we live, work, love, and play. We enjoy sharing our space with visitors who we hope learn about ostrich and make some great memories.

This valley was inhabited by the Kitanemuk tribe for thousands of years. They would live here in the winter, and spend the summers hunting and gathering pine nuts and acorns up in the Tehachapi and San Gabriel mountains. This region is called the Antelope Valley because there used to be antelope-looking creatures called pronghorns.My first trip out here was to watch the Blood Wolf Moon lunar eclipse of 2019. It didn't disappoint! This is the spot to come look at the stars, howl at the moon, eat jerky, draw weird cactus trees in your sketch book, whatever!Learn more about this land:Joshua trees 50 miles closer to LA than the Joshua Tree National Park!This is 2.5 acres of protected Joshua Tree lands in the Antelope Valley north of LA, between the snowy Tehachapi Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. My first time out there I saw BOTH ENDS of a rainbow in front of the snowy Tehachapis!! Super dark skies, and a million stars at night. You'll probably see the Milky Way! It does get breezy at night, so dress appropriately.It feels like the wild west out here, and that's the main appeal--no rules, nobody watching. Think long dirt roads, tumbleweeds, bones, and maybe some old bullet shells (there's no shooting allowed on the property anymore). This is not a state-maintained, paved, manicured operation--it's the edge of the desert wilderness. Please respect the property and clean up after yourself!This is for people who are comfortable exploring beyond a concrete slab with electricity and janitor-cleaned restrooms. There are no designated sites, so pick whatever looks good to you. We often have multiple parties at once, so feel free to spread out.This land used to be the domain of the Ketanemuk tribe, which I think means People From The East. In the summer they would go up and hunt and get pine nuts in the Tehachapi Mountains, and acorns from the oak trees in the San Gabriels.The property itself is along a dirt road called Avenue C. It's about a 20 minute drive from the town of Neenach (pronounced Nee-nack), where there's a general store and a cafe. They make a great breakfast burrito. It's also a few minutes from the State Poppy Reserve, which blooms in the spring with miles of California poppies.If you have a larger group or event in mind, get in touch! ***Some things to please be aware of:
- This is off grid camping! No markers or specifically defined campsites are present, we provide exact GPS coordinates. All sites are dispersed camping in the wildflower fields! We intentionally leave the property unaltered to preserve the raw natural beauty.
- Our site is about 2 miles from the nearest paved road (HWY 138) It’s all dirt roads to get here off of HWY 138, through the hills. For years we have found 2WD is more than sufficient to get here, as long as you drive slow, and don't stop on hills you should be fine. However, some campers have found that not to be the case for them and wanted 4WD, so come prepared either way.
- If you are unfamiliar navigating using GPS coordinates or with off grid camping, our location may be hard to find and may not be a good fit for you.
- It can get very windy sometimes so come prepared to snuggle up in the back of your car or camper and enjoy the stunning stars, sunrises, sunsets and views.
- It is considerably easier to navigate with a little daylight.
- We are happy to provide you with a map as well upon request, which seems to be the most direct route.

The property is about as remote as you can imagine. It is bordered on all sides by empty land lots. The nearest house is over 1/2 a mile.
The property is at the top of the mountain.
360 views!! Down to desert, across to Tehachapi, and over the community of Lake Hughes. It’s spectacular, the space and peace is breathtaking. Many local people have said it’s the best views in the whole area. At certain times of year the mountains are snow capped. We are at 3800 feet, so there is snow at times in winter.
The property is a working horse ranch, and small holding. We share the space with pigs, goats, Abigail the donkey, chickens, and horses. You are welcome to visit with them.
There is lots of meadow area to camp!!!
Please do not plan to arrive after dark. The maps usually will send people, on incorrect routes, and you will need additional directions from me.

My sister and I enjoyed our stay. The bathrooms were close to the site, there was so much to explore and they offer fun activities. The host was very kind. The views were immaculate and we loved seeing the ostriches before we went to bed and right when we woke up. This was such a pleasant experience, will definitely be coming back!

A beautiful spot with excellent views, and a pleasant surprise visit from some cattle on our way up to the location. I strongly suggest bringing something that can off-road a bit, it wasn't a rough drive, but I know my sedan would have gotten stuck or struggled toward the end. The provided outhouse is a welcome addition. It's a nice, quiet spot for a good getaway with a killer view of the stars all around.

This was a wonderful stay. Beautiful site. Hot outdoor showers for a small fee (what a treat in that setting!) clean toilets plus hot and cold running water close by. A nice little walking trail (about a mile) right there. And John was a great host, very friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this site!

He was very accommodating, showed us around the property even though it was late, and made sure we knew where we could find cell service on the property. The next morning, he even came by our site after he checked the road conditions for our intended trip. Felt super safe, would stay again!

We went back to Silver Spur Ranch for another rafting trip with Momentum Expeditions. The site is exactly the way it was with full hookups and well maintained. I was talking to John and learned that there are a couple of ther sites that looked maintained as well. I told John I’d name the sites for him. It seemed like he didn’t mind.
The RV sites are situated next to large trees that provide shade. We booked the same site that we stayed at in June 2025, which I named Cottonwood tree. The other RV site has an Elm tree. There’s a Yellow house that is used for lodging.
Overall, as I mentioned in my first review, Silver Spur Ranch is peaceful and quiet. There’s a creek that has clear water flowing through it that you can stare at and be mesmerized. We saw a mini rapid.

I recently had the pleasure of camping at Site 1 at A Unique Mountain Retreat, an off-grid haven tucked away in the hills of Tehachapi. Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by the host, John, who took the time to explain the various thoughtful features of this remarkable retreat, highlighting the attention to detail that makes it truly special. The atmosphere is one of peace and tranquillity, with nature trails throughout the property inviting exploration, and the mountain views are absolutely stunning. The campsites are level and spaced far enough apart to ensure ample privacy for each camper. The toilets and communal outdoor kitchen area are spotlessly clean and well-designed. While I didn’t try the optional outdoor hot showers, I hope to do so on a future visit. The glamping cabin caught my eye; it is well-appointed and charming. Although cell service was intermittent at my site, this was actually a nice touch for those looking to disconnect for a while. I keenly anticipate returning for a more extended stay to fully enjoy all the amenities and natural wonders that A Unique Mountain Retreat has to offer!

We loved spending time with all the animals at this campsite! The host Corey showed us multiple sites and let us choose. We picked one close to their home so we could use the WiFi but it was also a nice flat area and next to the creek! The farm animals were social and came by our campsite to visit quite a bit. The dogs came by often to check on us - SUPER friendly! The hosts were very helpful and answered any questions or needs. There is not cell service or WiFi once you exit off 58. GPS screwed us up on finding the entry gate but Corey was so patient and waited for us to figure it out! Some of cows slept by our tent one of the nights about 30 feet away or so. It was quite hot by late afternoon and very cool at night. This place is for you if you like animals! It was very peaceful- lots of stars at night- very secluded. It was a great experience to camp at a working farm.

John is a fantastic host. Our time on his ranch was amazing, truly a beautiful property! He accommodated an extra days stay at another space on the property which allowed us to fully enjoy our time at the river, even though it was a last minute request. The dogs were able to roam around unleashed and the kids rode their bikes and quad around until the batteries ran out. We had a great time in the Kern River Valley, thanks to John and his laid back, but welcoming and flexible style. I'd recommend a stay here anytime, and we'd definitely come back when we can!
