Shasta View Campsites are part of a former 30,000 acre ranch that was split up into smaller parcels in the 1970's. It is comprised of 5 to 500 acre parcels. All these parcels are homesteads. There are no commercial or industrial areas on the Ranch. In 2005, I started looking for land in the Shasta area after falling in love with the Mountain and it's surrounding lakes. I have always known exactly what the land I would spend time on would look like. One day, in 2006, I was driving on the Hammond Ranch, again hoping I would find that place. I was driving my van, with my 2 kids and some of our friends, through a heavily wooded area. I made a left turn down a dusty dirt road and Eureka! I had found IT. I was at the top of a 60 acre meadow that had a full unobstructed view of Mt. Shasta, encircled by lenticular clouds. I told a friend of mine, who was at the time a realtor in the Shasta area, that I had found a piece of land that looks perfect to me. If, that is, it also had a creek on it. She did some searching around and found out that the land that is now Shasta View was in fact for sale. And, it had a creek on it. And it was comprised of some acreage in the meadow and some in the trees. This was everything I had wanted. I bought the land within the next 2 weeks. After camping on the land a few times, I started to understand where the best sites would be to build some structures. Because the meadow always has a certain amount of moisture to the ground, it is not suitable for building a structure. The good thing about that, is that nobody who owns land in that meadow will ever build there. We will only be looking at Mt. Shasta from that meadow. Never a building. The platform I built in the meadow offers on a chance to sleep under the stars. Billions of them. My property is only one of two that have old, large Cedar and Pine trees on it. It made perfect sense that I would be building a small house in those trees. While camping on this land, you will find exquisite beauty and solitude. Within 30 minutes, you will find Lake Siskiyou and Castle Lake for some of the finest swimming around. If you fish, the McCloud and the Sacramento rivers offer some of the best trout fishing in the state. There are two “Blue Ribbon” designated streams. The first is Upper Sacramento River. It starts as a trickle from the melting snows of Mt Shasta and by the time it reaches the area around the town of Dunsmuir which is just south of Shasta City, it is a true “Blue Ribbon” designated trout stream. The place to find all the ins and outs of fly fishing in this area is at the Ted Fay Fly Fishing shop in Dunsmuir. The second “Blue Ribbon” trout fishing is on the McCloud River. Historically some of the best trout fishing to be found. I have fished both these streams and always caught fish. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BEDDING IF YOU'LL BE SLEEPING IN THE TREEHOUSE. And need I say anything about hiking on Mt. Shasta?

We originally purchased the 20 acres of untouched land and built our cabin, the "Snug Shack," as a getaway from the city. Fast forward a few years, and 40 acres next door with an abandoned house on the canyon ridge went up for sale. We decided to purchase it and start a homestead there. That 40 acres where we now live was badly abused, and we have been in the process of cleaning up and restoring it. Fortunate for you, the land surrounding the Snug Shack was never abused and is still pristine and beautiful. By camping at the Snug Shack, you help support us in our mission to restore this beautiful place.We named our homestead after the rings of small oak trees that grow here on the ridge.: "Oak Ring Ridge." Beautiful land with obviously great views. The treehouse is surrounded by, well . . . trees, with a door and porch looking out onto a meadow. Sitting on the porch with some coffee in the morning was perfect. Much of the road back to the property is flat gravel but the last part is a really rocky, bumpy road. Drive slowly and carefully and reconsider any vehicle with minimal clearance.

This was my second time staying at Shasta View and it is such a special place! Very comfortable, and beautiful spots to camp. It is an extremely short walk to the meadow where the mountain is (1 minute), and it is such an incredible view. Plenty of shade in over 90 degree weather for us. The camp kitchen is well equipped and spacious - we loved the sinks for dishwashing. The stream water was clean, cool and refreshing on hot days as well. Feels like you are pretty removed from civilization but town is only 20 minutes away and it is a maximum of 35 minutes to all main attractions around Shasta. Directions were a bit confusing but we all found it and had a great group trip!

We had a wonderful time in this cabin. Although the cabin is small, it is well designed and feels much more spacious. The loft was great and the outdoor shower worked exceptionally well. The property is so peaceful and private, it was great to hang out. Hope to get back there sometime.

Gary’s property is just beautiful. The kitchen is fully functional, and a great space next to the creek to gather. The field and view of Shasta where you set up the tents is so peaceful. The cabin is cozy and tucked away a bit from the kitchen for privacy. Gary was a great communicator. Highly recommend!

It was our first time in a little A-frame cabin and this one was quite charming and loved the handmade feel to all the details! It was a wonderful retreat and reset as we were off grid. The snuck shack was indeed a snug, remote and charming stay. The host was ever so kind and accommodating. Great trails with wide open spaces for the doggies. The kitchen was well equipped and suitable staying off grid. The roof was clear corrugated so you can catch a starry night from the loft bed. Host left a walkie talkie to get in touch for any questions or needs as cell service is very limited. Wish we had time to stay longer and explore.

Absolutely phenomenal experience. Hosts are gracious, kind, and set up a beautiful nest that has everything ya need in a gorgeous environment. Naturalist paradise: encountered coyote, wild horses, golden eagle, bobcat, red-tailed hawk, western tanager, deer, amongst many other songbirds as well as a diversity of wildflowers. Tranquil and enlivening stay, full of wild beauty. Highly recommend.

What a spectacular spot, we had so much fun. The cabin was perfect and the surrounding area was majestic. We lost track of time while inventorying all the wildlife footprints we saw, a feast for your eyes and imagination. Highly recommended and hope to stay again in the future.
