Parking on the premises is located 70 yards from the cabin. A wooden railing leads from the street down a path to the house.
There are two access points into the cabin; one on level ground and the other via a wooden stairwell.
During winter, with an elevation of about 6,000ft, tire-chains may be required, depending on the snow.

There are wild animals that visit the property surroundings. Enjoy them from a safe distance and be ready to take plenty of photos from a safe vantage point.

Weekend Trip to Kernville Ranch
Great location off the beaten path. Nice and quiet, with lots of critters to gawk at, domesticated and wild. Deer wandered by while we soaked in the hot tub watching horses, and at night we were serenaded by nearby coyotes. The property has lots of character itself and is near enough to Kernville proper to go out for a hot meal, browse its shops, or hunt-down Quartzburg ghost town (which I strongly recommend!).

The place has a unique charm, particularly the land surrounding the cottage, with the hot tub being an absolute winner.
You feel disconnected from the world. Whether you’re alone, as a couple, or with children (as in our case), it’s very peaceful.
We also loved the region for exploring the forest, going hiking, or kayaking on Lake Isabella.
What could be improved concerns the cottage’s equipment, particularly in the kitchen. A number of basic items are missing, such as a colander, real cutting boards, scissors or more sharp knives. The pans are also quite old and stick very easily. Since there is no dishwasher, that made things a bit of a challenge, though in the end it wasn’t really a problem. It would also be nice to have a few basics on site, like cooking oil (as we found everywhere else), or one or two laundry pods just to help out at the start of the stay. Also, keep in mind that the Internet connection is slow, though that’s probably part of the charm as well.
Finally, there weren’t any clear check-out instructions, so it was a little tricky to know exactly what to do, especially with the trash (is there no recycling?). In the end, we figured out that you apparently just leave everything as it is, including the bedding and such.

The Playhouse was a beautiful place and so full of nature! The first morning we woke up to squirrels playing right outside of our window, later on we saw a Deer and her little baby walking right past the dining area! The nearby stream could be heard throughout the camp (it wasn't loud, it was very soothing) and there were a ton of birds! If what you are wanting is a bit of nature, this is the place to go! We loved every minute there!

My girlfriend and I rented the Playhouse at Spirit Walk and loved it so much we were sad to leave. John has done an exceptional job of setting this beautiful property up to be a peaceful space to unwind and renew. Conveniently located, yet it feels like you are way out in a creekside retreat far from town, it could not have been better. Communication was exceptional, instructions were clear. For us, the outdoor shower option was one of the highlights. Cooking under the canopy of oaks in the shade when it was hot was another. Exploring the area, we saw several camp grounds etc and we felt so lucky that we had found John's Spirit Walk property. The playhouse is simply appointed and perfect. The upstairs loft bed with windows looking out to the woods at sunrise is something I will definitely be returning for. If you are considering booking the playhouse, Do it! It won't be your last time.

Stayed here with my wife and three young kids for 4 nights. Really nice property, fully stocked house with everything you'd need. Hosts are very communicative and responsive. There is no AC, but it didn't get too bad in the house even though it was almost 100 outside. It's about 3+ hours south is the entrance to Sequoia National Park, so a big long day trip. Very close to Lake Isabella (nice for a swim, but bring some sort of shade!) and Kernville (cute town, had a great lunch at the brewery.) The house is within a little neighborhood with houses close by, so not very remote depending on what you're looking for, but worked for us.

Weekend Trip to Kernville Ranch
My partner and I had a wonderful long weekend on Kernville Ranch! A beautiful peaceful little bit of paradise, surrounded by fields of horses and a couple mule friends. The lodging in the Shiny Spartan is cozy and quaint, has all you need for a few nights' stay and then some, including fridge, shower and sinks with hot or cold potable water, AC/heaters, basic utensils/plates/bowls/glasses/cookware, and the griddle which was great to grill some sausages on for dinner!
Loved sitting out stargazing on the open patio, greeting the farm animals every morning, and the hot tub next to the creek was such a magical treat! Lots of wildlife including birdsong all day.
I recommend bringing some citronella candles as it gets buggy in the evenings!

This place was amazing! my girlfriend and i were lucky enough to have had the entire place to ourselves the 2 nights we stayed at spirit walk. we loved that john was very intentional about leaving as little human trace as possible when designing this place with a compost toilet, biodegradable everything, outdoor kitchen, etc. i truly felt immersed in nature and left feeling much calmer. also kernville is such a california hidden gem! we’ll definitely be back

This land is very well thought out. John didn’t miss a thing! Whether you’re tent camping or staying in the adorable playhouse, he thought of it all. The communal kitchen is equipped with everything so there’s no need to pack oolong items. There are food storage bins as well and a few picnic tables. The deck is beautiful and the lighting is perfect.
I stayed in the playhouse and it’s cozy and romantic. It has a private fire pit but I’m guessing anyone can enjoy it. There is even an outdoor shower for those bold enough ;-)
The property is private and well kept. I went valentines weekend so it was cold and rained the first night but the second night was clear and the stars were bright. The creek/river was very active and the sound was soothing. You can access it down the path.
John wasn’t there but walked me through the property over the phone as if he was right there with me. I HIGHLY recommend visiting, I’ve never experienced anything like it, and quite honestly can’t come up with anything negative to say other than I didn’t stay long enough :-)
