We came to this magical place to found a self-reliant, homesteading eco-community when I retired from corporate life in 2006. It's called the Village on Sewanee Creek, named for the creek 800 feet below the bluff where we are located.
I traveled the world as a senior executive for Baskin-Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, Papa Johns, Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and other retail franchises, making the world safe for Pizza, Ice Cream, Pancakes Video Rentals and American convenience. And I was ready for something more fufilling. I scouted for a place of exquisite natural beauty and I found it here. I bought way too much land just before the real estate bust and learned how to turn a nice fortune into a very small one.
I faced challenges and had lots of fun. Now I want to share our experience.

We have a working farm with sweeping views of Lookout mountain and only 12 minutes from all the comforts of downtown Chattanooga. Our expansive 120-acre property provides campers with the freedom to choose their camping spots anywhere on the farm.
Farm animals include horses, cattle, hogs, chickens, goats, bees, stocked ponds, gardens and much more. We have strategically placed signs throughout the property to help you identify potential neighbors. If you desire the company of ducks, consider setting up camp near our picturesque duck pond. For those who prefer the rustic crowing of roosters to a phone alarm, we have four chicken coops dispersed across the farm. Our horses freely roam the front pastures. The cows enjoy grazing on lush grass and taking refreshing dips in the ponds. They also relish watching the sunset from the hill's vantage point, as it offers the best view on the farm.
We are a working farm with staff tending to various jobs throughout the day. We have a map to show some of the popular locations campers have enjoyed in the past, but it is first come first serve. We intentionally leave some of our fields uncut. In some fields, the grass can come up above the knees. If you are picky with the grass, these are pastures on a farm and we do not cut them. We leave that to the animals to take care of. All of our staff are super friendly and happy to help guide you to the best camping spot and answer any questions. In searching for your campsite please note that there may be livestock in and around certain areas as we rotate pastures. Please respect farm rules and do not camp in a pasture with cattle and do not enter any gated area without speaking to someone on the farm who knows which fields the cattle is in.
Potable well water can be located from the blue spigot outside of the staff housing area, in between the orange and green tiny home, and outside the outdoor shower. Fire rings and chopped wood are ready for you to borrow and return by the outdoor shower area. If you are interested in a more posh experience, we have yurts and tiny homes for rent

Three years ago our multi-generational family decided to go on an adventure. We had talked about moving to the woods for years, but finally decided to turn our dreams into reality. After hiking through what felt like every property for sale over 100 acres in North Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we finally found the perfect spot.
Why do we call our property Whippoorwill Woods? Did you know that whippoorwills don’t nest in trees? They lay their eggs on the ground in the forest. They’re birds that love camping! As soon as we heard the whippoorwills start singing in the spring, we knew it was the perfect name.
We’re so excited to share our property with campers who love nature as much as we do. We specifically set up the campsites to give as much privacy as possible. We hope you’ll come visit and soak up the bird songs, the wind in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. We have 20 acres of savannah grassland full of native plants and wildflowers and over 80 untouched acres full of awesome rock formations and creeks with waterfalls available for you to hike. There's a stocked fish pond for catch and release fishing and a gorgeous view overlooking the Cumberland Plateau and the Sherwood Valley.
Experienced and beginner campers are welcome! We live on one side of the property, so we’re available to assist (setting up tents for the first few times is no joke!) or we’re happy to give you as much space and solitude as you need. We have three campsites available in the native savannah grassland, and one that is a "hike-in and choose your favorite spot in the woods" site. We have a porta-potty available, but if you're hiking in, you'll want to bring some WAG bags with you. If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!

I gotta say this was a super awesome place to camp. It was clean and the hosts where super nice. Didn't get to meet Danny directly but I had the pleasure of talking with (I believe his name was Zed) . Anyways I highly recommend Dark Hollow.

It's a good spot to use as a landing place. It's not super private but I didn't feel bothered by the people there. I tried to be quiet so they felt the same! Can't beat the price. The host is very accomodating and answers all questions. They also have a cabin I have stayed at in a dofferent part of the property and they were helpful with that as well.

Great spot for a weekend get away! Camping in the bed of my truck with ease and while it did rain the whole time the view made up for it. friendly hosts helped us get settled fast. Dogs are super friendly and really close to Tigers for tomorrow!

Zed and Strider were amazing hosts! Our campsite was beautiful and the hiking trails on property were fun to explore. Zed and Strider asked us many times if there was anything they could do to make our stay better. They were very accommodating and attentive. We would definitely recommend dark hollow and if we are ever passing through Alabama again, this will be where we camp!

Nice stay. Area has been super dry so the mud holes were not as challenging. We have started putting caution tape up across the road to deter the locals from visiting the site while we are there- and it has worked well the last 2 trips. The only visitor we had this trip was a very friendly dog that spent the day with us.

The property is beautiful. Had a great time and am very thankful for all of the helpful amenities included (clean port-a-potty, communal barn, picnic tables, etc.). There was a dog and a cat who visited us a few times throughout our stay, both very affectionate and sweet. Overall a 10/10 experience.

4 nights at The Falls at Sewanee Creek
Grant and his wife were wonderful hosts and offer several amenities that my girlfriend and I both said we’ll be back to enjoy someday. The glamp tent setup is truly breathtaking a great in between roughing it and glamorous camping. Grant took the time to make sure we had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. For people thinking about this trip, I would say be sure to bring some steaks and charcoal to put on the rocket grill! It’s a really cool piece and cooks a steak to perfection. Other than that, flashlights are a plus as it gets dark early in the winter and there isn’t much lighting outside of the tent. Don’t forget to bring something fun to do around the campfire too since there’s a really cool
Rock pit a couple steps outside the tent. S’mores, music, campfire songs, and games. You’ll want to find ways to be outside the tent if you’re like us. Speaking of, there are so many cool things to do outside of the camp! Grant gave us several awesome destinations to visit before we left and we got to each of them! All exceeded our expectations. From food, to sites, to sounds! I’d encourage everyone to explore Tracy city, Monteagle, and even Nashville is only an hour and a half away!

Words can’t express how welcome I felt! They showed me around some of the different camping grounds. Made sure I had enough wood for the night. Very very nice camping area.
The views or a 10/10! The sound of the waterfall put me to sleep. The picture can express the beauty of the camping ground.
I’ll be back soon and this time I’m bring my family so they can enjoy the scene and relax to. I can’t wait!

Dark Hallow is, by far, the best Hip Camp experience my wife and I have had. The camp host was excellent in every way. There’s a reason this place is ranked very highly. Extremely friendly, accommodating, and personable. The camp sites were pristine, had all the views, stars, hikes, and amenities you would desire for primitive camping. Our dogs enjoyed the stay and especially enjoyed the quick hike down to the beautiful waterfalls and pools in the hallow. My wife and I will be returning in the near future to visit Danny and Zed.

Weekend Trip to The Falls at Sewanee Creek
My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights on grants trampoline tent and it was such a different but beautiful experience, the tent area was very nicely set up, being able to hear the creek while going to sleep or just sitting by the fire was also very relaxing. Only downside was that it was extremely cold, I would highly recommend bringing an air mattress, sleeping bags, and lots of blankets to keep you warm. We went November 28th-30th. Grant and his wife were also out of town but they were still very helpful and sweet, they explained everything we needed to know about the area and gave us some trails to check out. Everything was beautiful and I highly recommend staying.

This campsite is great! It is very spacious with great views. They have canoes and kayaks available to use and it’s great to get on the water for sunrise or sunset. Located close to some awesome outdoors areas like Suck Creek and Middle Creek. Highly recommend.
