Three years ago our multi-generational family decided to go on an adventure. We had talked about moving to the woods for years, but finally decided to turn our dreams into reality. After hiking through what felt like every property for sale over 100 acres in North Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, we finally found the perfect spot.
Why do we call our property Whippoorwill Woods? Did you know that whippoorwills don’t nest in trees? They lay their eggs on the ground in the forest. They’re birds that love camping! As soon as we heard the whippoorwills start singing in the spring, we knew it was the perfect name.
We’re so excited to share our property with campers who love nature as much as we do. We specifically set up the campsites to give as much privacy as possible. We hope you’ll come visit and soak up the bird songs, the wind in the trees, and the beautiful sunsets over the mountains. We have 20 acres of savannah grassland full of native plants and wildflowers and over 80 untouched acres full of awesome rock formations and creeks with waterfalls available for you to hike. There's a gorgeous view overlooking the Cumberland Plateau and the Sherwood Valley.
Experienced and beginner campers are welcome! We live on one side of the property, so we’re available to assist (setting up tents for the first few times is no joke!) or we’re happy to give you as much space and solitude as you need. We have three campsites available in the native savannah grassland. We have a porta-potty available, but you'll need to bring your water with you. If you have any questions, or if there’s anything we can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask!

We had an amazing time tent camping at Bug Tussle for a week! The land is absolutely gorgeous and serene and peaceful, just what we were looking for on our much needed break from the day to day chaos. The camping spot was very clean and large enough to spread out or set up. We spent days walking through the creek and looking at rocks and hiking some of the trails. Ous little dog chased frogs every night. Our week ended with an absolutely spectacular full moon that made the trees and water glow. We can't wait to come back and maybe even bring the kids. Don't forget your bug spray!

Weekend Trip to Parksland Retreat
Great stay! Everyone is quite laid back, the property is well tended and neat. Be aware that walking to most campsites/bell tents or the cabin requires a good deal of downhill travel and uphill travel to get back to the center of camp and parking area. I would estimate the equivalent of 3 to 5 flights of stairs is common to most of the individual camp sites with the exception of Hill Top. There is an accessible cabin under construction.
If you like a laid back atmosphere where you can take time away from your devices, this is a great place to do it.

If you want to really relax clothes free then this is the place. Whether you just relax alone at your campsite or want to have a more community space. Then this is the place for you. It is more primitive than most campsites but its a plus for me. You can go a few days without your electronics and really enjoy nature in its fullest.

Parksland is such an awesome place to unplug for a weekend. I've done both the primitive camping and the glamping in the yurts with a memory foam mattress. If you get the chance to go on a weekend for a Solstice or Equinox you're in for a real treat! Sauna session, bonfire, and more. This has quickly become one of my favorite places to escape to!
Yes, it's clothing optional but you can wear as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. My main observation is that the majority of people I've met there book their 2nd stay before they leave.

What Dusty has done with his property is awesome! For naturists/nudists and people just wanting to be free with nature in a quiet peaceful setting, with or without clothes, I highly recommend Parks Retreat! The campsites are far enough apart that you have plenty of privacy. The views are beautiful. Unfortunately we didn't get to see and experience everything he has to offer due to being a very quick overnight trip and getting there after dark, but we will definitely be going back for a planned full weekend soon. Just a piece of advice, if Dusty asks you if you're sure you want a certain site, especially the P3 Creekside, listen to the man!! Don't get me wrong it's a gorgeous site, but it is quite the hike. So if you're old and out of shape like me, pack light and go with his recommendation lol...... Anyway, Thanks Dusty for giving people like is a place like this we can enjoy without negativity and judgement! You are awesome!!! Looking forward to seeing you again and getting the full experience!

Loved staying here, and will definitely have to go again sometime to really explore the whole property. We were only there for the night on our way home from a long road trip. Leigh was very communicative and greeted us and showed us around when we arrived. She was very friendly and helpful!
The campsites were in the mountains, tucked into a quiet forest without light pollution, so you could really see the stars. The A-frames are comfy and cozy, and have decks with seating, fire pits, and coffee machines. The bed was so comfortable! Plenty of places to plug in your electrics. The property was extremely well-kept on terms of cleanliness. The bathrooms are close by and also very clean and well stocked. Such a beautiful way to end our adventure!
The path up the mountain is pretty steep and rocky, so wouldn't recommend taking a low-sitting vehicle. Some of the A-frames have steps and rocks to hike over, but there are other accessible options on the property as well.

I loved P3 Creekside as it really feels like you're all alone with nature. You have the creek right there along with the Ridgeline loop trail if you want to do it. Its big enough for 2-3 small 1-4 person tents, so bring a group, or 1 to 2 of the 8-10 person tents. Just know you'll likely be on a slight slope depending on the position.
Now the BIGGEST thing to remember is that it is no joke you'll have a hike from your car to the site and back. I HIGHLY recommend you only bring enough supplies for 2-3 trips per person. Keep everything else you may need at your car. If you're not mildly prepared and young or in shape, it will be a major challenge. But worth it in the end.

Loved our primitive camp spot! And the band that played after the rain shower on Saturday night was phenomenal! We hikes to Bernard’s Badass Waterfall Sunday morning before our drive back to Georgia…steep downhill then steep uphill back, but the waterfall was worth it.
