Wales' westernmost campsite, boasting stunning views overlooking Ramsey Sound on the Pembrokeshire Coast

All manner of weird and wonderful campsites are brought to your attention via Hipcamp, but we all need a little bit of normality in our lives and this includes campsites where us average bods, whether couples or families, can enjoy a standard camping holiday – after all not all of us are searching out the weird or eccentric.

This is where Rhosson Ganol rides to the rescue, and where there isn’t a yurt or a tipi to be seen. Neither are the owners on a campaign to save the planet, and there is absolutely nothing strange or uniquely different trying to sell the site to the camping punters. They (the Griffiths family – Henry, David and Kate) just want their guests to enjoy their holidays.

The wide and unspoilt view may very well be the strongest reason for falling in love with Rhosson Ganol, but there is something else here gnawing at the senses, and it could be that feeling of being in a place where there is nothing beyond. In effect this is the Welsh version of Land’s End, or John o’ Groats, with Rhosson Ganol being the westernmost campsite in Wales. All this can be felt in your bones, too, sitting outside the tent staring happily and vacantly out at the sea on a warm summer evening.

Right, enough notional nonsense, for this is a fantastically practical place to come for that normal camping holiday we promised. Before venturing too far from the site in search of things to see and do it is worth kicking off the explorations by strolling down to that rocky little cove at Porthstinian, where a few leisurely facts become clear. The first being that a walk along the coast path from here is eminently possible, with a bus service bringing walkers back to base at the end of the day.

There are also quite a number of boat trips running out of Porthstinian, offering a bewildering variety of aquatic adventures including contrasts such as a visit to the RSPB reserve on Ramsey Island, to an outrageously mad jet-boat session in the whirlpools and big, big waves that batter this coastline. Added to all this is the existence of a nice beach just half a mile away, the city (well, it’s a village really) of St Davids just over a mile, and the whole of west Pembrokeshire readily accessible from this small campsite, which teeters on the very edge and makes a normal kind of holiday something rather extraordinary.

Overall the site was nice, the views were stunning. The toilets were clean but the showers didn't have anywhere to put your clothes i.e. shelves or extra pegs. The wifi was pretty much non existent during our stay.

Very uncomplicated and friendly!
It was a great stay, very uncomplicated, my pitch number was displayed upon arrival at an information point. I didnt quite like the pitch and changing to a different one was very easy. The shower block was new and clean. Had a great time.

Dirty toilets and showers, bad path
The views were wonderful, the pitch was great - flat and with water hook up and electric, and also great Wifi connection from our plot (no. 3 ) , but the lack of cleaning of the toilet and shower block would prevent me returning. We turned up on Monday afternoon to filthy dusty toilets and dirty showers, and left friday morning and they hadn't been touched. They were never cleaned and hadn't been in a long long time. I took photos too. Also the walk to the shower block wasn't lit at all and was very difficult to navigate at night and an uneaven surface. It is a real shame these 2x things really let them down as a few solar lights and a visit from a cleaner would have solved this.

What a view!
The most beautiful spot, outstanding views even on the rainiest days! Very quiet with great facilities. Incredible walks along the coast right there. My only criticism would be that the pitches were REALLY close together, I’ve never been to a campsite that is so compact- on balance though this was a minor thing … you need to do a boat trip to Ramsey, an unforgettable experience seeing the baby seals and porpoises

A very special site
We love this very special site - the view, sunsets especially, are amazing. A 10 - 15 min walk to the nearest beach and the coastal path is also easily accessed. Dogs are welcome too. The host and his family are welcoming and available if needed. The toilets and showers have been refurbished in recent years to a high standard. There’s a walk to the facilites, just a couple of minutes? And wifi is patchy, great for relaxing. Neither of these detracted from this site for us and we’ll continue to come back as always.

Deeper clean needed.
The campsite is great but toilet and shower block could do with a good clean at last once a week. Clean all round the toilets clean wall tiles and sinks. Dust ceiling from cobwebs. Mop floors. Its a shame to let the cleaning down as it is a new shower and toilet block. Such a great location for a campsite. I have written this review because I cannot recommend this campsite to a friend.

At first I was to be honest hmmmm?? Due to the walk to the toilet and shower blocks - however got into a routine The place has warmed on me during my stay as there are a lot of walks to be done with fab sceneries The drawback is you have to travel for for main supermarkets for value shopping But overall I am extremely impressed and it allows you to relax from the past paced life Beautiful views all around

Whilst the location and site was as anticipated, there was a booking mixup between Hipcamp and the onsite- host - happily this was resolved reasonably quickly. Overall the site was good value for money for the time of year though we were disappointed by the lack of internet connection when it had been advertised.

Lovely sea views
Views are wonderful, place is clean and well kept. The toilet block and washing facilities are across the road from the campsite, so does require extra effort compared to other sites getting there and back.

Quite possibly the best view in Wales. Certainly in Pembrokeshire. Very generous pitches with ample space between you & your neighbours. Peaceful & serene and only 30 minutes walk to St. David's......or you can catch the bus!

Lovely campsite, however, very little guidance on how to check in so had to ask other campers. Similar story with locating toilets and facilities. Other than that, an incredible campsite with amazing views, just a little bit difficult to find

Lovely stay didn’t want to come ho
We had a lovely time camping. The views were incredible and the sight was amazing. We took our dog. He loved the costal walks every day. We had book to stay 4 nights however we fell in love with the place we stayed an extra night. The 2 owners are lovely and nothing is too much. Even booking the extra night was easy. The shower and toilet facilities was also lovely. A little walk away but that didn’t bother us. I would highly recommend the place it’s beautiful waking up to the view every day Thank you for a lovely stay

Beautiful views from the pitch and very close to the boat trips. David went above and beyond sorting out the electric hook up for us. Toilets and showers were clean and well looked after. Everyone loved the stay.

Beautiful site not great host
A beautiful site but not really happy with the welcome instructions.. tells you it’s a mile and a half down the road from st David’s which is well and good if there wasn’t roads of that road which were not indicated.. called to get directions.. had not even realised I had a booking which I had sent a message on when I made the booking but got no reply.. did not tell me where the water was where anything was . I had to ask the other guests information.. but the site and views from there was breathtaking.. just need a better host

Badgers are not your friends!
We couldn't have asked for a better trip! We booked it on a whim and ended up waking up to a view of the sea FROM OUR BED! It was so peaceful. June was definitely the best time of year to go as it was just before the Summer rush. We went down to the local beach and paddle boarded as the sun set and hiked along the coastline seeing glimpses of dolphins, seals and jellyfish! The people were the kindest, most generous people. Our neighbours gave us bread after the badgers raided our food. Note to self: Keep food locked in a box, not in a zip-up camping cupboard! Silly me!

The site was well kept, showers and toilets were clean and ‘available’. The site was close to many gorgeous walks and a short drive to St.David’s. My only criticism would be children playing ball games (namely football) … only it started early in the morning (8am) and then when families returned from their days out into the late evening. We’re very tolerant but the ball came into our tent on a number of occasions from different groups. I also realise it is the responsibility of the parents not the campsite, but maybe an ‘allocated games area?’ We took two dogs as did many other and would be expected to keep them ‘under control’ and out of peoples’ personal space and did … unfortunately ‘football’ around the tent doesn’t do that. Again I realise it’s not up to the campsite but maybe some ‘helpful restrictions’ would provide guidelines for families. But the location and amenities were lovely thank you 😊
