We felt very lucky to be able to stay on Anna’s farm. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place with wonderful views. There’s an orchard and some very pretty sheep! We enjoyed the hammocks in the woods and the firepit. Would definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful time, the place is beautiful and quiet, away from roads and houses. Vans, campers and tents are well spaced from each other. Everybody very respectful. Facilities are great: shower and loos are immaculate, fire pits available to rent and wood to buy, pub in walking distance, and even home pizzas nights at the weekend. Location is great too, we will definitely be back!

We had a lovely weekend in Pett, this is a great campsite. The site is very basic, a couple of compost loos and a tap which was all we needed. We found it was a nice quiet site and appreciated being able to have a fire to cook on. The farm shop down the road is a very small one, eggs, milk, apple juice and usually lamb burgers but they had all been sold when we were there. The site is hilly but there is plenty of space and we found a good flat space to pitch our tent on comfortable grass. Great location for walking and close to the beach. Also lots of interesting places nearby to visit, Kent and East Sussex railway, Bodiam Castle, Hastings etc etc.

Weekend Trip to Pett Camping

We decided to get away for the last bank holiday of the year, and chose Pett Camping for two nights. Located on a sheep farm it's a wonderful site - lovely countryside, rolling hills, the most spacious we've ever experienced on a camp site. Whether you are tenting or have a motorhome/campervan, this is a great site. Yes it has the one composting loo (regularly cleaned) and one cold standpipe, but that seems ok. Everyone is really quite chilled. This site is perfect if you want to relax and recharge. If you don't self cater there is a great country pub in The Royal Oak (10mins stroll, huge portions, great value), or The Two Sawyers (20mins, a busier pub and placed more upmarket). Down the hill is Pett Level, a great long shingle beach with a local village vibe, and a short drive away are Hastings town and the more quaint and boutique Rye. During our stay we met the couple who run the farm and site who are really nice people and we'd love to come back next year :)

Our rural location is truly fantastic! You'll instantly feel the stresses and strains of everyday life disappear as you soak up the delightful Kent countryside and adjacent ancient woodland. The picturesque Stour valley is just down the road, Canterbury and it's cathedral are only 10 mins away and Kent's extensive coastline can be reached in less than 20 mins. Some delightful pubs and restaurants can be found in Canterbury, and you are spoilt for choice when it comes to top quality country pubs in the local area.

Our glamping site is located in a 19 Acre field which is exclusively yours, not another soul (certainly no other campers) will disturb you apart from the odd rabbit or dear! The south coast is only 10 mins away with all kinds of water activities and hikes to enjoy. On site you have plenty of woodland walks to explore and if you are a fan of English Wine, we are slap bang in the middle of wine country with numerous vineyards to explore locally.

Notable campgrounds

Best for country views: The Sunny Field has off-grid tent pitches, campervan sites, and glamping in bell tents, amid miles of open countryside. It’s a 10-minute drive from the reserve.
Best for budget campers: Flying Horse Inn is a country pub just west of the reserve and offers free overnight campervan parking for evening diners.
Best for escaping the crowds: Sunnyside Farm has plenty of grass and hardstanding pitches, optional electric hook-ups, and tranquil surroundings. It’s a 20-min drive away.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Kent Downs campsites and caravan sites can book up quickly, especially in July and August, and during school holidays. Plan up to six months in advance for popular sites or those with limited pitching.
You will need to pay a deposit to secure your campsite reservation; some sites ask for the full payment in advance.
Be sure to check seasonal opening and closing dates. Many campsites open from March through October, while others stay open year-round.

When to go

The most pleasant weather for camping is from April through September, and this is the main hiking season in the Kent Downs. Wildflowers bloom throughout this period, but come in late spring to admire them at their most colourful. Sites like the Devil’s Kneading Trough fill up with day-trippers throughout July and August, so make an early start to get a jump on the crowds or opt for a weekday visit in the off-season to enjoy the view to yourself.

Know before you go

Wye National Nature Reserve is located in the Kent Downs AONB, about a 20-minute drive from Ashford. Trains from London take about an hour to reach Wye train station, just 2 miles from the reserve.
Free parking is available at the Wye Nature Reserve car park along Coldharbour Lane.
Camping is not possible in the reserve itself, and wild camping is not permitted throughout the Kent Downs AONB.
The reserve has a restaurant, but for public restrooms or to purchase picnic supplies, head to Wye village.
