Weekend Trip to The Nut Plat Retreat
Highly recommend, my partner and I had a great time at Finlay’s cabin. It was exactly what we were looking for in terms of: how remote & private it was, outdoor and indoor fire & the hot tub! We also loved the unique structure and authentic feel… however a few things to note, for the cost per night(£180) I would expect: body wash & shampoo / hairdryer, better kitchen essentials, the coffee left was almost empty for example and old stuff was left in the fridge& top shelf was left completely wet.. I know it’s ‘small’ things but for the price you’d expect these things to be attended to.. for us we didn’t mind too much, but would have made the experience a lot nicer to have these things to improve the overall feel and experience. Also I felt that in terms of cleanliness, it could have been cleaner, many cobwebs & spiders, hair and dirt in the bath tub, messy outdoor porch area; we wanted to use the outdoor bbq and had to clean it very well ourselves.. for the price you would expect it to be clean and ready to use with coals etc however we had to make do with the indoor logs with no fire starter as only option was the chemical indoor one which we didn’t want to use to cook food on.. making it difficult. The hotub area is lovely, however we wanted to use it at night which proved difficult as no outdoor lightning, and indoor torch didn’t work.. some lanterns outside would be a great addition. Duncan was a kind host and has a very special plot!

Great welcome and although the windiest weekend of the year so far a decent pitch with a little shelter.
Two walks over the weekend one directly from camp and the other from the Swale estuary car park, both worth it.

We felt very lucky to be able to stay on Anna’s farm. It’s a beautiful, peaceful place with wonderful views. There’s an orchard and some very pretty sheep! We enjoyed the hammocks in the woods and the firepit. Would definitely recommend.

We had a wonderful time, the place is beautiful and quiet, away from roads and houses. Vans, campers and tents are well spaced from each other. Everybody very respectful. Facilities are great: shower and loos are immaculate, fire pits available to rent and wood to buy, pub in walking distance, and even home pizzas nights at the weekend. Location is great too, we will definitely be back!

It’s one of the best camp sites I’ve been to and the pitches are in the woods, make a nice change from sitting in someone’s field, plus good shade when it’s hot.

Lovely place to camp - nice open space and there was a tree the kids really enjoyed climbing and decorating with our camping lights! Really nice to have farm animals on site too. Great location to visit Eastbourne.

All you could wish for in a campsite. Every detail carefully considered from the horse box showers, ingenious and plenty of space, roomy pitches with butterflies and wild flower boarders, a gem, look forward to visiting again. Thanks Philip and congrats on creating such an amazing and peaceful place.

I visited Hale Farm for 2 nights with my daughter aged 7 and 4 for their first experience of camping and could not be happier. The organisation, attention to detail and facilities were all spot on. We were greeted shortly after arrival and introduced to the layout and facilities and then left in peace to enjoy our stay. There were also frequent rounds by the campsite management to ensure guests remained respectful of others later in the evening which was very appreciated.
The small animal farm was great fun for the kids and to while away part of the mornings. There is indeed a coffee truck and an ice cream van who visit the site each day and were very reasonably priced.
We visited The Gun for lunch and enjoyed the short walk which meandered through some hedgerows and fields.
I quite enjoyed that there weren't a slew of activities available to sign up to as it meant more quality time amongst ourselves, with the added bonus of no mobile reception which means my attention was fully on the kids. We'd love to come back and perhaps bring some friends next time!

Prachtige camping met ruime, uitgemaaide plaatsen. ‘S avonds hoorden we de bosuilen. Heel zacht op de achtergrond is de snelweg te horen. Door de week rustig, Engelsen kamperen voornamelijk in het weekend. De pizza en koffie corner is dan ook gesloten door de week. Hout is te koop bij de camping eigenaar. Philip is vriendelijk en positief.
Wc en douche is basic zoals meestal op de Britse campings, maar prima.

We loved the cosy Yurt and the laid back atmosphere a lot! Animals running around the campsite is also a lot of fun, but close the yurt when you are gone or get a visit from the goats that eat what they can find!

Beautiful campsite. Well spaced out pitches with loads of room for big tents and plenty of room for the children to run around without worrying about them bothering other guests. Would recommend the pizzas on Saturday night, too! We’ve stayed at lots of great campsites this summer and this was easily our favourite.

Absolutely amazing retreat! We stayed at Finlays cabin, sadly for only couple of nights. Really lovely, peaceful, private wooden cabin. The owner just let us be! Reccomend to anybody who wants to get escape from daily life.

Notable campgrounds
- Best for country views: The Sunny Field has off-grid tent pitches, campervan sites, and glamping in bell tents, amid miles of open countryside. It’s a 10-minute drive from the reserve.
- Best for budget campers: Flying Horse Inn is a country pub just west of the reserve and offers free overnight campervan parking for evening diners.
- Best for escaping the crowds: Sunnyside Farm has plenty of grass and hardstanding pitches, optional electric hook-ups, and tranquil surroundings. It’s a 20-min drive away.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Kent Downs campsites and caravan sites can book up quickly, especially in July and August, and during school holidays. Plan up to six months in advance for popular sites or those with limited pitching.
- You will need to pay a deposit to secure your campsite reservation; some sites ask for the full payment in advance.
- Be sure to check seasonal opening and closing dates. Many campsites open from March through October, while others stay open year-round.
When to go
The most pleasant weather for camping is from April through September, and this is the main hiking season in the Kent Downs. Wildflowers bloom throughout this period, but come in late spring to admire them at their most colourful. Sites like the Devil’s Kneading Trough fill up with day-trippers throughout July and August, so make an early start to get a jump on the crowds or opt for a weekday visit in the off-season to enjoy the view to yourself.
Know before you go
- Wye National Nature Reserve is located in the Kent Downs AONB, about a 20-minute drive from Ashford. Trains from London take about an hour to reach Wye train station, just 2 miles from the reserve.
- Free parking is available at the Wye Nature Reserve car park along Coldharbour Lane.
- Camping is not possible in the reserve itself, and wild camping is not permitted throughout the Kent Downs AONB.
- The reserve has a restaurant, but for public restrooms or to purchase picnic supplies, head to Wye village.
