We have a bus stop at the top of the track and Melton train station is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive. There are access points onto public footpaths, leading to Rendlesham Forest. A famous site for UFOs! Sutton Hoo is a stone's throw away. Bring your bikes and explore the area on wheels. There is water access and portaloos. We do not have showers yet. This family-friendly site is handy for walks on the Essex Way and other local footpaths, and tractor and trailer rides around the farm are organised on alternate days to give guests a glimpse into agricultural life. Activities complete for the day, it's time to chill out, and that should be easy here – all pitches have access to toilets and hot showers in a trailer close by, and firepits are provided so you can have a safe campfire (with wood available to buy on site and a great farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away for fireside snacks). Pitches themselves are large (please note only one tent per pitch is allowed), well kept and well spaced within a meadow that backs onto the River Roding. Dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of places to take them for a walk nearby. London folk looking for a quick escape to the countryside, this is a place to bear in mind – it’s only about an hour and quarter by road from the city.

I booked a couple of nights because I wanted a base as I wanted to try and get some photos of the local red deer...The hosts were so helpful especially as I'd forgotten my camping pots and pans and they were kind enough to lend me some...The site was beautiful and very atmospheric with owls hooting and buzzards flying overhead...All in all a great site which I'll definitely be using again...Oh and I eventually managed to find my red deer stag too...Many thanks....😊👍

Had a lovely night at Plum Camping - our second stay there. We love how quiet and peaceful it is, and yet so close to Norwich. You can watch the planes coming out of / flying into Norwich Airport without any disturbance from the noise. Plenty of birds and wildlife to see and hear, and space to roam around in a lovely flat field, with wild patches to break it up. The facilities are rustic, as you'd expected from a camping farm, but they're clean and well-maintained, with everything you could want for a basic camping trip - properly hot showers, toilets, washing up facilities, fridge and freezer, charging area, fire pits and wood. We were meant to stay 2 nights but had to leave a night early as our son was taken ill. But I'm sure we'll be back another time!

We originally booked for just 4 nights. But once arrived we extended a futher 2 nights, silas and Tom made us feel very welcome and couldn't do enough so help us and show us round and explain everything. The facilities are somewhat basic but fully functional for our needs. The site is a work in progress but a very special place indeed. We will certainly be returning next season so see their progress and enjoy another wonderful stay at what I'd call a small piece of paradise. What also say is we are a group of 3 with limited mobility and the site was easy to navigate and flat. So I'd happily recommend this site to all able and disabled campers.

Stunning woods and what amounts to what legal wild camping could feel like. Jon is such a lovely host. So friendly and accommodating. The composting toilet was well maintained which meant it didn’t smell like some campsites I’ve been to. It is a working farm so do message or call ahead to let Jon know your arrival times etc. it helps him to make the arrival more smooth.

I have nothing but good tbings to say about campung at hipcamp. The people running the camp were great; helpful and friendly. The fascilies were more than what anyone would need and maticulously cleaned every day. The surroumding area is a treat too with loads to see and do, for adults and kids alike. I loved my stay so much that I extended for a further two nights, and changed all my plans so I wouldn't have to leave. The outdoor communal kitchen was amazing to cook on, and the Tipi was a lovely added touch. Robert and his little dog Bear were so welcoming, and gave me lots of tips about the local area, and then they left me to relax in the magical surroundings of Pitt Wood! Archer’s Field sits in a beautiful place close to both coast and countryside offering access to lots of activities. The pitches are large, and campers are free to choose where they camp. I loved being able to walk directly from the campsite (along the Weavers Way) and on to the Blickling Estate.

1 night at The Meadow @ Waples Mill

My son and I are prolific campers, and we enjoyed every aspect of our week at Martin's Meadow campsite. The layout is unlike any campsite I've visited. The pitches surround a field, with the river running behind them. There's plenty of space between pitches, and it's one of the few campsites where simply sitting down to enjoy the view or watch the sunset is a pleasure. Every pitch has a fire pit, and Martin provides plenty of firewood free of charge. The location is excellent too, within easy reach of Chelmsford and Ongar. There are warm showers and proper toilets, but don't expect luxury. And chatting with Martin is a fun part of the experience.

Where to go

The King’s Forest

Together with Thetford Forest to its north, the King’s Forest helps comprise the biggest human-made lowland forest in England. The Icknield Way long-distance trail passes through, while a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village sits in the south by West Stow Country Park and a number of camping options.

Isleham & the River Lark

From its confluence with the Great River Ouse, the River Lark winds southeast to Isleham, nine miles from Thetford Forest, before continuing upstream to Bury St Edmunds and beyond. Navigable until Jude’s Ferry between Isleham and Mildenhall, and with a major marina at Isleham, the waterway is a favourite among pleasure boaters and walkers who frequent the footpaths lining the river. Several campsites dot the area, some near the water.

East of Thetford

The town of Thetford hugs the forest’s southeast corner, east of which are many important wildlife areas including Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve with its nationally rare chalk grassland and heathland habitats, plus the SSSI Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve. The Peddars Way long-distance path runs east of landscaped 18th-century parkland Shadwell Park, then intersects with Icknield Way near Knettishall Heath. Look for a fair number of kid-friendly campsites nearby.

Ely & Around

West of Thetford Forest, pancake-flat farmland spreads across to Ely. This is one of Britain’s smallest cities, arranged around a stunning cathedral on the highest land in all the East Anglian fens (with a whopping elevation of 85 feet!). Ely’s countrified surroundings, also known as Bedford Level, are the place to come for excellent boating and a fine choice of campsites, many with pitches scattered through lovely wildflower meadows.
