Our most popular pitch is our beautiful SSSI woodland.
There are only 25 pitches available. We have a mid wild pitch on the outskirts of the woods, lovely grassed area between trees. Our top field is perfect for motorhomes & caravans.
Plenty of space to breath and relax. Located on the stunning heathlands of the Sutton Heath. We are surrounded by beautiful woodland walks, including the Sandlings walk and just 10 minutes from the river Deben.
We have a bus stop at the top of the track and Melton train station is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive. There are access points onto public footpaths, leading to Rendlesham Forest. A famous site for UFOs! Sutton Hoo is a stone's throw away. Bring your bikes and explore the area on wheels.
There is water access and portaloos. We do not have showers yet. Blue/grey waste must be taken away. LEAVE NO TRACE

The place to find all this is The Meadow at Waples Mill, an Essex farm site between Chelmsford and Dunmow (and about 15 minutes’ drive from both). This family-friendly site is handy for walks on the Essex Way and other local footpaths, and tractor and trailer rides around the farm are organised on alternate days to give guests a glimpse into agricultural life.
Activities complete for the day, it's time to chill out, and that should be easy here – all pitches have access to toilets and hot showers in a trailer close by, and firepits are provided so you can have a safe campfire (with wood available to buy on site and a great farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away for fireside snacks).
Pitches themselves are large (please note only one tent per pitch is allowed), well kept and well spaced within a meadow that backs onto the River Roding. Dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of places to take them for a walk nearby.

Had a great stay here. Found a great spot deep in the tall, pine tree woods. There were a few other people here, but still felt like I had the place to myself.
Was warmly welcomed by Joe on arrival. A super sound guy who explained the lowdown, and looked like he's go out of his way to help out with something you may need or may have forgotten.
All in all, a great spot... in a great spot. Had a great reset during my stay.
I was clinging onto 1 bar of a 4G signal (3network) for my stay. Just the right amount for being connected.

Very welcoming staff who helped me set up the tent and provide me with advice which was extremely useful. Very nice location, with great shop nearby where you can buy extra camping gear and equipment. Facilities were clean. Highly recommend coming here.

A lovely, quiet, basic site. Has all the necessities like flushing toilets and hot showers, but not much else. Fire pits with cooking grills free to use, seasoned firewood available to purchase. 2 minute walk to farm shop for fresh meat and veg, or supermarket 5 mins drive up the road. Plenty of space to set up, no restrictions on pitches, just a general expectation of being courteous to other campers. Grass cut to a good level, ground mostly flat. Would definitely return. Great value site.

Sadly the weather was shocking for our trip and there were only another couple of campers so after battling with our set-up in high winds after enjoying a fabulous coffee and cake in the farm shop cafe in arrival (beautiful shop and cafe) - we finally were about to have a brew outdoors and take in the lovely orchards that became our view. Sadly the winds kept getting stronger and as the sun was going down we made the decision not to stay as the winds were only going to get stronger. Also lack of other campers and morale to keep us going we left and headed home. Nice facilities, toilets were clean and washing/cleaning set up looks good and loved the area that held the fridge and charging points. Just a shame the UK weather let us down - for our very first camping trip.

A small, quiet campsite with clean toilets and shower facilities. Especially liked the family bathrooms for convenience and ease camping with young kids. The campsite had kitchen areas for washing up, shared fridges and charging sockets. An onsite reception sold beverages and snacks. We had a great stay (despite the 40mph winds!) and hope to return in the summer.

Wonderfull break in Robins nest. Lovely garden with table and chairs.
Ramp and steps to doors. Lovely lounge kitchen and dining room area. Everything that’s needed to cook everything. All lovely clean fresh linen. There is a lovely walk in the forest. A barn with lots of extras. Another with everything campers would need, microwave fridge, just too much to mention. Go and stay , you won’t regret it.!

Absolutely love this campsite , run by lovely people , sell the greatest fresh eggs on earth , the woods are so peaceful, literally feel like I’m on my own in the middle of no where , it’s the most perfect place to unwind , it’s wild camping without actually wild camping , luxury of a handy tap and a toilet. Just love it there ..

Really each to book and if you have any questions prior to booking they are answered very quickly and really friendly too.
Was met on arrival and had a talk through the pitches, found a lovely quiet corner and set up, firewood was brought over later (it’s a very good amount for the price paid - the crate lasted us two days - I’m sure if we were there another night it would have been enough for then also)
The composting toilet was nice and clean and able to clean hands afterwards. Maine water by the car park along with a field you can play games on. There is also a secret enclosure which is a lovely touch and a bug hotel
We enjoyed the back to basic and just being in the moment. Thank you for a lovely stay (and in actual fact if it wasn’t for seeing a little campfire from the other pitches in the evening we felt like we were there all by ourselves

We loved our time at these woodlands, very peaceful and unique stay, we didn’t manage to see any animals but that’s just the nature of nature.
Also, Joe was super, we forgot our Braai and he kindly provided us with one to cook with. Definitely will return!

We had such a lovely stay at this magical campsite. The man at reception, Joe, was incredibly helpful and accommodating to us! such a genuinely lovely person and a great welcome when we arrived.
Because it’s still early in the season, we were actually the only ones staying there, which made the experience feel even more special. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and magical all around. ✨🌲
We decided to drive further into the forest with our van and made use of the wood provided by the campsite. It was really good value for the amount we received and made the whole experience even nicer.
There are lots of great walks all around the area, and we left feeling completely relaxed and refreshed , ready to head back to busy London.
Afterwards we visited the nearby UFO landing site and saw the UFO sculpture, which was great fun and literally just around the corner. 🛸👽✨
We would definitely book this site again. 🌲🚐⭐️

What a wonderful place! Stayed here last night for a solo camp. I love the idea of wild camping but I’m not quite confident enough to go alone. This was the perfect balance because it IS wild camping but with permission. Joe was very helpful and welcoming and the groundsman (I’m not sure of his name) helped me with my camping stove issue. Wonderful walking trails all around, pigs in the field opposite, drinking water and a couple of portals. What more could you want? I’ll be back.

Exactly the experience I wanted, wild camp. We camped down the bottom in the woods end of February, a bit wet so was aloud to have a campfire off the floor. Lots of owls to be heard and woodland behind to explore all the way to Sutton hoo! Excellent quiet just what we wanted, wild camp.

Second time staying here and will be rebooking again soon. Grass pitches are nice and level, the provided portaloo is clean and well maintained. The hosts are super friendly too. On a clear night the stars are amazing, last time I stayed we saw Mars as well as a host of other constellations. Easy for me to get too and a relaxing stay….would definitely recommend

Where to go
The King’s Forest
Together with Thetford Forest to its north, the King’s Forest helps comprise the biggest human-made lowland forest in England. The Icknield Way long-distance trail passes through, while a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village sits in the south by West Stow Country Park and a number of camping options.
Isleham & the River Lark
From its confluence with the Great River Ouse, the River Lark winds southeast to Isleham, nine miles from Thetford Forest, before continuing upstream to Bury St Edmunds and beyond. Navigable until Jude’s Ferry between Isleham and Mildenhall, and with a major marina at Isleham, the waterway is a favourite among pleasure boaters and walkers who frequent the footpaths lining the river. Several campsites dot the area, some near the water.
East of Thetford
The town of Thetford hugs the forest’s southeast corner, east of which are many important wildlife areas including Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve with its nationally rare chalk grassland and heathland habitats, plus the SSSI Knettishall Heath Nature Reserve. The Peddars Way long-distance path runs east of landscaped 18th-century parkland Shadwell Park, then intersects with Icknield Way near Knettishall Heath. Look for a fair number of kid-friendly campsites nearby.
Ely & Around
West of Thetford Forest, pancake-flat farmland spreads across to Ely. This is one of Britain’s smallest cities, arranged around a stunning cathedral on the highest land in all the East Anglian fens (with a whopping elevation of 85 feet!). Ely’s countrified surroundings, also known as Bedford Level, are the place to come for excellent boating and a fine choice of campsites, many with pitches scattered through lovely wildflower meadows.
