A family-run, working farm in East Sussex offering spacious, traditional camping with no set pitches

It’s a storybook image: the farmer walking the yard, bucket in hand, tailed by a pair of chattering geese. At Hale Farm in East Sussex this scene has been given a curious twist. Ruth rises early, and heads out to feed the animals one by one – the gorgeous Sandy and Black pigs, Tilly the friendly pony and a couple of playful donkeys – but instead of geese, she’s tailed by chattering children, a herd that’s usually five or six strong. The picture seems to sum up this family-run site; Famous Five-esque in its attitude to camping. If you thought the days of back-to-basics, pitch where you like sites were over, then think again.

Perfectly pinned between the South Downs National Park and Kent’s High Weald, this 56-acre working farm offers camping as it used to be in a large, open meadow, where thin threads of campfire smoke drift lazily into the sky. There’s a standing tap for water, showers, toilets and a couple of washing up sinks but otherwise don’t expect to find a playground or onsite WiFi. That’s not really what they’re all about.

The meadow itself is surrounded by mature hedges and trees, with grass levels managed throughout the year by a flock of Ryeland sheep who shift to a neighbouring field during the summer. Space is certainly not an issue. The farm’s self-imposed limit of around 20 pitches keeps numbers down, while the tents-only rule gives the place a thoroughly traditional feel. Kids roam, safe from roads and vehicles, and adults convene around their evening BBQ (you can buy the farm’s own sausages on site).

Luxury lovers can find one exception to the basic-camping rule, a refurbished shepherd’s hut of the kind often found on the Sussex hills during the 19th century. Inside, it features a full-size double bed and a fitted kitchenette, plus a toasty log burner that warms its wooden interior into a couples’ cocoon of loveliness. It has a real air of romance about it and offers homely comforts to those leaving the tent at home, yet still has enough history and tradition to feel apt on such a rustic campsite.

Aside from losing the kids to the farmyard – prepare yourself for days of hearing their favourite animal stories – there is plenty nearby to keep you busy. A footpath alongside the site connects you quickly to The Weald Way, a scenic long distance route that leads you further through the Cuckmere valley, or you can walk the 10 minutes into the local village of Chiddingly. Simply head for the pointy church spire and the village eventually comes into view, blessed with a convenient local shop and an even more convenient pair of pubs. Re-hydrate in the beer garden and ponder the wonders of Persil. If the kids don’t end their weekend here covered in grass stains then they’re doing something wrong!

Lovely pitches with plenty of space and a fire pit. Good facilities and nice touch that they come around each evening with wood and produce.

Extra-friendly and helpful!!
Nathan very kindly came to pick me up when my hike had to finish early due to darkness, blisters and severe cramp! He showed me where to pitch and where the facilities were. In the morning Tony came to say hello and was super friendly. A lovely simple campsite and beautiful views over the hills.

Grass Pitch
Lovely campsite with large pitches around a designated fire pit and friendly staff. Instructions sent beforehand were really clear on location of our pitch. Scott came round after we'd arrived to check us in and tell us about the site. Kids loved seeing the animals on the farm each morning and ice creams from the van that arrived each evening! Coffee and pastries from the van in the morning were a welcome addition too! Lovely views from the campsite of surroundjng trees and site is well away from roads so very quiet. Facilities were absolutely spotless - the staff managed to keep everything clean all day. We would definitely stay again.

Great trip, would recommend
Lovely quaint spot. Scott was very friendly and happy to assist with questions about the area. Lovely sausages and eggs purchased for the morning. Worth a little walk around the farm if you like animals at opening time also. Easy walk to a local pub with great food, and easy walk to a local brewery. Toilets were kept clean. Overall great stay

Had a lovely time at Hale Farm. It was a brilliant first camping experience for my four-year-old - having a campfire was definitely a highlight! Only downside was that it got quite busy on the Friday night leading into the Bank Holiday Weekend and there was often a queue for the toilets. Those toilets however were really clean and I was particularly impressed by the composting toilets which didn't smell like I expected them too! Overall a lovely campsite and a friendly welcome too. Enjoyed the fresh coffee from Geno too! We'll be back!

Incredibly clean and beautiful site
I have just returned from a couple of days here with my two teenage sons. We loved the area, the views and the people. Set on a slight slope but pitches were relatively flat, well marked out and tended. Everybody was friendly and the facilities were IMMACULATE. Both the compost toilets and the flushing toilets were well stocked with toilet paper, and very clean. Plenty of hot water to wash up and hot showers. What more can you need? Fantastic view of the night sky meant we were able to lie down in the field and stargaze, even seeing a few shooting stars. The only down side was that we had to come home. Thank you Ruth and Scott and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Shepherds Hut
“Camped” in the Shepherd’s hut for two nights. Position was perfect, set in a field just off the main tent field with a fire pit, logs included. The hut itself had everything you needed and a very comfortable bed! It is such a nice campsite, amenities are great and very well cared for, everything is kept very clean. It was serene, it was quiet, it was fabulous!

Scott and Ruth are great. Delivering wood for the fire pit, sausages eggs and bacon for breakfast. Then Gino comes with coffee and croissants in the morning and wonderful ice cream in the evening. Peaceful and quite remote with two great village pubs nearby within walking distance. Great place to wind down in the holidays

Luxury Bell Tent - Forget-Me-Not
Hale Farm is a lovely campsite that is very well thought out and well equipped. We stayed in one of the bell tents which were in a beautiful large field with spotless private bathrooms and kitchens for each tent. The owners were attentive and helpful, we will definitely be returning! Also lovely little brewery only a 10 minute walk away with amazing views, definitely worth a visit…they also had a pizza van when we went for an easy dinner option!

We really enjoyed camping at the Hale Farm campsite. The field has nice views, the facilities are in top condition and cleaned regularly, and there is a lot of space between the plots. Located right next to a public footpath, you can reach the local pubs and brewery walking through fields. You can buy wood for the firepit and good bacon in the afternoon, as well as coffee and pastries in the morning. We didn't go to see the farm which is opened to the public every morning, but it seemed to be a popular activity. I would definitely recommend!

Grass Pitch
It starts with Ruth and Scott, amazing owners who are always willing to help (and my god we’ve asked !) perfect pitches, never crowded, exemplary toilets and showers, always clean always stocked. Amazing views, great pubs within walking distance on the Weald way. But for us, as a family it’s the things you can’t put your finger on to explain. It’s just relaxed and beautiful, my daughter insists we spend her birthday there camping in may whatever the weather and that’s in her birthday list! Amazing farm for the kids (and parents!) to meet the animals and again, the kids are treated so kindly and Scott and Ruth always will stop and talk to them despite how busy they are. There is a really relaxed chilled environment about the place from the minute you get there to the minute you leave. Even when full it’s still spadeful , peaceful and relaxing, loads of things for kids to explore and space for them to just be kids, my childrens laughter through all the stays is something that stays with me during the winter months. I really can’t speak highly enough of the whole place, it’s my favourite place to go. See you soon and I promise the kids won’t keep asking about buttercup!

Everything was fab - huge pitches with fire pits, really clean compost toilets, hot showers and washing up area. Loved that Scott the owner drives around every evening in his tractor with wood, kindling and fresh eggs, bacon and sausages for sale at good prices. Really lovely quiet location on a working farm and 2 pubs within a short walk. Highly recommend.

Grass Pitch
A very large field surrounded by trees, in the middle of the countryside, with lots of privacy (at one point we had the whole field almost to ourselves), an organic, environment-friendly compost toilet, and farm animals available for visits. Beauty and goodness combined: beautiful to the sight, and good for the soul, the heart and mind; I was looking forward to the dawn chorus of birds, to the bonfires at night, and to our barbecues. Very, very, very peaceful

We stayed in one of Hale Farm’s beautiful bell tents for three nights in the summer and everything was just perfect. The tent itself was thoughtfully kitted out, the location idyllic and both the communal kitchen area and lockable private bathroom were spotlessly clean and just a stone’s throw from our tent. Oh and the farm animals were adorable. Thank you Ruth and Scott for a lovely break - we’re looking forward to coming back next year!

Hale Farm was amazing, the glamping meadow was large and peaceful and having your own bathroom facilities felt very luxurious. There was also the added bonus of the coffee and ice cream van. Ruth and Scott were helpful and no question or request was too difficult. We would definitely recommend Hale Farm and would happily revisit.

I honestly can’t fault this campsite. Wonderful site. The owners are very helpful & friendly with nothing too much bother. Well maintained with everything you need for a pleasant stay. Amenities were cleaned throughout our stay which made the experience more pleasurable. The farm is a massive plus to this site, beautiful and clearly well looked after animals. Will for sure be back!

This is a lovely campsite with spacious pitches and fire pits and within walking distance of pubs and a village shop. The highlight of the stay was a trip round the farm to see the animals who seemed really happy and well-cared for. We went with a mixed group of adults, teenagers and toddlers and everyone had a brilliant time. Highly recommended.

Hale Farm is so simple and that's why we love it and keep coming back. It's basically a big field surrounded by excellent climbing trees (and if you go later in the year there are loads of blackberries). There are farm animals to look at (the goats are my favourite, my kids like the donkeys!). The toilets and washing facilities, while basic, are spotless and well looked-after. Even when it's busy you don't feel as though people are camping right on top of you. And there is basically no light pollution so if you're into a spot of star-gazing it's perfect. We'll be back again next year for sure, and the next...
