The Shepherdess Hut

1 unit · Glamping15 acres · Ilfracombe, Devon, South West England
Set in a hilltop near Ilfracombe in North Devon, Fullabrook Farm Retreat is home to The Shepherdess shepherd’s hut. Based on a family-run working farm, this romantic hut is ideal for a couples’ holiday amid spectacular woodland views – plus the chance to have the place to yourselves – apart from the grazing sheep in nearby fields of course. Built from scratch by the site owners, the hut is decked out with a kingsize bed, dining and living space, plus an en-suite bathroom with a powerful, hot shower. Thoughtful extras here include robes and toiletries, plus a TV for chilling. There’s a gas oven and hob in the modern kitchenette, alongside a fridge with freezer and a stylish Belfast sink. There’s no danger of you feeling the cold on chillier evenings, as the hut has its own central heating. For those sunny evenings, the private patio has a barbecue, tables and a firepit, so you can dine outside and cosy up around the fire as the night sets in – look out for some spectacular sunsets and starry displays on clear evenings. If you can manage to drag yourselves from this lovely little spot, the local village is West Down (five minutes’ drive), which has a community-run shop for stocking up on barbecue essentials, as well as a foodie pub if you fancy a change of scenery.

Tunnel Glamping

1 unit · Glamping15 acres · Rhondda, Cynon, Taff, South Wales
Blaennantygroes Farm is fifteen acres of peaceful uplands which includes a four acres broadlleaf wood and a field which is part of a large Site of Special Scientific Interest. Our elevated position gives a spectacular view across the valley, and behind is forestry and open countryside leading to the top station of Bike Park Wales. We are 100 metres from the mouth of the closed Merthyr Tunnel, hence we are known locally as 'Tunnel Farm'. The line of the disused track now proves a level walk through woodland which starts at the bottom of our drive and continues past the Rhoswenallt Inn, 1 mile, and on to Llwydcoed, a further 2 miles.

Four Little Trees

3 units · Glamping40 acres · Haverfordwest, Wales
Set on our 40 acre smallholding which slopes down from the ridge which overlooks Haverfordwest and the Preseli mountains through the woodland to the saltings along the edge of the Western Cleddau. The holding is managed for conservation. There are lots of places to explore. You can explore the stream which trickles down the woods. There is about 11 acres of woodland, and about the same area of salting. A disused limestone quarry forms our own private secret water, It is a great place to watch badgers. We allow bonfires to be made in designated places. If you are by the river at the right time you can catch Bass and spot kingfishers and if you are really fortunate you can see seals and otters. There is plenty of wildlife here. On a fine day the buzzards are always overhead and the river full of duck and waders. Red Kites are here particularly in the Spring. We have even spotted an Osprey on the river complete with a large fish its claws. You can walk to town along the river – or walk down river to Little Milford and Hook.

Northcombe Farm Shepherds Hut

1 unit · Glamping21 acres · Beaworthy, England
Whether you’re planning on darting down to Dartmoor National Park for hikes and the like or exploring sandy beaches and surf hotspots on the Devon coast, you’re going to need somewhere cosy to stay that’s within reach of it all. That’s exactly what you get with the shepherd’s hut at Northcombe Farm, just half an hour’s drive from Dartmoor National Park, 35 minutes from Bude and 40 minutes from Widemouth beach. That’s not all – the shepherd’s hut also has stabling facilities available for one horse, and with three bridleways nearby, there are plenty of options for outings. With two private fishing lakes, you’ll be free to spend the morning fishing for roach and tench if you wish. The river Wolf also runs through the site’s boundaries. Soak up all that spectacular scenery from the South West Coast Path too, along with splendid seaside towns along the clifftop route. South Devon has three areas designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as a World Heritage Site, a selection of national nature reserves, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, forests, woodlands and parks. They’re all mighty good places to appreciate nature at its finest. Beaworthy (10 minutes’ drive) first, perhaps, for granite tors, standing stones and ancient woodlands? Or Dartmoor’s ponies, stannary towns and peaceful villages?

Shepherd's huts near Woolacombe with wifi provided guide

Overview

Nestled along the North Devon Coast near Mortehoe, Woolacombe is surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty and activities for camping enthusiasts. Woolacombe Beach is a major draw for swimming, surfing, and sandcastle-building—the beach also provides on-duty lifeguards. Nearby tent pitches and caravan sites offer easy beach access. Or take the caravan out to campsites in and around Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks to explore the rolling hills and moors of the English countryside. Private farmland and expansive valleys characterise the region, where campers can explore on cycling paths, dog-friendly hikes, or coastal cliffside walks. Head back for the evening to a family-friendly campsite with modern amenities, or escape off the beaten path with just a backpack at a dispersed tent pitch.

Where to go

Woolacombe Beach

On the shores of Bristol Channel, over three kilometres of gently sloping sandy beach attracts sunbathers, kayakers, and surfers alike at Woolacombe Beach. Breathe in the fresh sea air and bask in expansive sea views while enjoying a variety of water sports. On-site caravan parking spaces are also plentiful, and convenient amenities make for a terrific beach day. Woolacombe Bay offers everything from basic tent pitches to holiday parks with electric hookups, modern showers, and TV aerial points.

Exmoor National Park

Exmoor National Park covers a diverse landscape made up of valley farmland, vast moors, and a rocky coastline. Exmoor invites hikers to traverse its many footpaths in search of nature’s bounty. The national park is also home to both historic hamlets and off-the-grid camping experiences along the banks of Badgworthy Water. Caravan campsites dot the area as well, with both family-friendly and adult-only options. Then navigate the Tarka Trail, named for novelist Henry Williamson’s “Tarka the Otter.” Or stargaze year-round in this International Dark Sky Reserve.

Dartmoor National Park

With nearly 1,000 square kilometres of open moorland, ancient woodlands, and rocky outcrops, Dartmoor National Park is open for wild camping in designated locations. Campers need to bring everything they need in a backpack, leaving no trace and trying not to disturb the local wildlife. This is especially true during the ground-nesting bird season from March to July. While overnight stays in motorhomes are not allowed on open moorland, they are welcome at family-run farm campsites and other private land nearby. After setting up camp, try exciting bouldering opportunities on granite tors, whitewater canoeing down River Dart, or cycling on dismantled railway lines, like the 11-kilometre Wray Valley Trail that passes through Lustleigh and the National Trust Parke Estate.

When to go

Summer months from June to September offer warm daytime temperatures in the low 20s, making surfing and sunbathing at Woolacombe Beach a popular treat. The warmer water is more inviting for swimming and beach sports as well. More adventurous campers may enjoy canoeing down the rapids of River Dart from late fall to early spring, but be prepared for colder temperatures this time of year.
