Finding this exclusive Devon spot is like making it on to the best VIP guest list in town

Never has there been a campsite more aptly named. It took this reviewer 20 minutes and two phone calls to find the place, despite the satnav indicating that I was around 200 metres away. Persevere, though, and the determined camper is rewarded with a brilliant little piece of England to call their own. Our tip is to look out for the sign for Moor Lane Nursery as, rather sweetly, the day-to-day business here is growing and selling gorgeous plants.

What this means is that the whole place is beautifully designed, with stunning plants at every turn. A stroll through the site is a revelation, revealing nooks and crannies peppered with comfy chairs, a barbecue, picnic tables and a wishing well along with essential amenities such as a fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle and so on. Its proximity to Croyde Beach means that it’s a favoured hangout of the surf crowd but, thanks to its tranquil, private vibe, it attracts the more chilled variety of surfer. There’s unspoilt countryside in every direction and you’ll share your stay with butterflies, owls, egrets, bats and dragonflies (plus the lovely Steve and family – this is their home and they'll be on hand to accommodate in any way). Back to nature, then, but with the bonus of the lively village of Croyde just down the road.

Great family site!
A great campsite! Steve is really welcoming and helpful, it was in a perfect location for me and my two boys to go surfing and cycling and there was a great family atmosphere on the site, with all the kids playing football etc. together in the evenings. The communal room with kettles, fridges etc. is really useful too, particularly if the weather’s not great.

Wonderful experience!
Steve and Jo extended real warmth and hospitality during our two night stay and Secret Spot camping is just stunning as well as the standards of cleanliness of the toilets and showers being maintained at all times. The gardens are really beautiful and looked in great shape despite the dry weather. We look forward to returning to the campsite next year with our kids. Firepit/BBQ area really nice as well!

Brilliant in every way.
We really loved Secret Spot campsite. It had a really friendly atmosphere with lots of room for the children to play and a wonderful maze garden for them to explore. Steve really bend over backwards to supply us with our every need and the communal area with kettles and toaster was very useful. Facilities always clean and tidy.

The best campsite ever!
I come here every year - it's probably the best campsite ever! Very spacious, safe environment for kids, everyone is super friendly and the owners are awesome. Great facilities, and the level of cleanliness is on another level. Highly recommended if you want somewhere just slightly out of town, near enough to get to either Croyde or Braunton, but with the feel of being slightly off the beaten track.

Epic wild camping Xperience
I loved being on this property as so super safe and clean and epically close to the best surfing beach. The guys are brilliantly accessible and accommodating in every way possible. TBH I want very little people knowing about this place ;)

Amazing!
Exceptional! Secret spot is exactly that, hidden in plain sight away from the more commercial sites with a more backpacker feel that you find in South Africa or Australia. The facilities were immaculate and Steve and Jo (and the dogs!) Were the perfect hosts. Our go to site in North Devon 😎

Just lovely tent camping!
As a tent camper I loved the fact that I was sharing the site with tents and the odd camper van rather than feeling I’m camping in a car park. Nice quiet site, plenty of space, lovely fellow campers, facilities spotlessly clean, communal areas likewise and incredibly useful to have access to fridges/freezers and an electric kettle. What’s not to love! Thank you!

Quiet and well equipped campsite
Return visit to Steve and Jo’s friendly campsite. Great location for surrounding beaches. Facilities here are excellent so you do not miss an electric hook up - super clean showers and toilets, kitchen area is a little sanctuary with large fridges, freezers, microwaves and kettles. Such a friendly campsite….the kids had great fun making friends and enjoying the space. We will be back again!

Peaceful and well equipped site
Lovely space to camp. The indoor facilities really made our first camping trip with little easy. Clean showers and Loos, and being able to store food in fridge and boil a kettle was a huge bonus. Little touches like hot water bottles available to borrow were so thoughtful. Beautiful spot, and interesting little paths that meander through well plotted greenery. Friendly dogs were a big hit with our toddler!

So much more than a camping pitch!
This is so much more than a camp site! The care that has gone into making this a memorable experience is phenomenal. The fields where the camping is are well maintained and excellent. On top of this, the facilities are second to none. Excellent showers and toilets. The communal "kitchen / lounge room" is a game changer, especially if you are unlucky with the weather. Big sofas, and a big table with plenty of fridge / freezer space and multiple charging points. There is a fire pit area / hammock and decking / gazebo and chairs and wonderful garden that you walk through between the shower and kitchen. Steve was hugely helpful and gave lots of advice about the area. This was our first camping trip with small children and we could not have wished for a better place to do it. Thank you!!

A secret discovered
I only stayed one night at Secret Spot camping, but plan to return again. I was greeted by Steve on arrival and given a tour of the gardens, facilities and camping fields. Everything was really clean and cared for, especially the ornamental gardens which have private areas to sit and relax with a hammock and a bridge over a lily pond. There are no designated pitches and visitors can set up where they choose -most seem to decide based upon a preference for morning or evening sun from what they told me (I found a spot that provided both). Steve and Jo limit the number of pitches and encourage a relaxed and quiet atmosphere, so I imagine most nights are as peaceful and relaxed as I experienced. I enjoyed a really nice (if too short) stay and plan to come back to explore more of this beautiful area.

Excellent Place To Stay
The communal area is what makes it, they've thought of everything. Tea and coffee, hot water bottles, sinks for washing up, microwave, kettle, fridge, comfy sofas. It's brilliant. Having somewhere to charge devices is invaluable too. Plus, if it's raining, you're not confined to your tent. And if it's not raining there's a communal firepit. Steve is great and the doggos are brilliant too. Highly recommended, especially if you're hiking the SWCP and are missing a few comforts.

Wonderful Site
Exceptionally friendly and thoughtful hosts together with great facilities make this one of the best camp sites I have stayed at. The bathrooms are very clean and well-appointed and it's the first place I've stayed at where there is a kitchen to make tea and coffee. The local area is amazing with easy access to huge sandy beaches. I recommend Heanton Court on the road to Barnstable as a great pub with wonderful views of the estuary.

We arrived in the rain, but the campsite owners couldn’t do anything about that. After a very peaceful night sleep (aside from the rain dripping on the tent!) we awoke to a fresh new day. The site is spacious (and when we were there quiet), the gardens are beautiful, with lots of little nooks to sit and read or eat your meals. There is a cabin with sofas/TV/WiFi and two sinks, ample fridge space and free tea and coffee. It’s clean, and people were respectful of distance. There are several toilets and showers, we never had to queue and everything is as you would dream it to be. The area is beautiful, and we enjoyed some lovely walks. I’d highly recommend this campsite and will try to get back there again in the future!

Secret Spot is a lovely campsite, which is kept very clean and tidy. We loved the reception hut with fridges, freezers, kettle, toaster, wi-fi, breakfast table and sofa. It was great to able to put our waste into recycling bins too. The nearest beach is a Saunton Sands, a short drive away, which our children loved. We highly recommend this campsite and would go back again!

Really enjoyed our stay over the bank holiday weekend. The site was still reasonably quiet which meant we could always use the great facilities. The pitches are flat which is always a must when camping but we noticed alot of other campsites in the area are on hills. The communal area was so helpful having fridges and freezers kettle microwave and toaster meant it was more like luxury camping. The gardens really are beautiful and made the whole site feel relaxed and tranquil. We would definitely return if we come to the area again. Many thanks to Steve and Jo

Our first camping experience in 16 years and came with friends who raves about it. Showers, loos and washing up facilities all clean. Basic grass pitch and a drive to access beaches etc. Would be ideal if could walk to a beach but lovely views and would recommend. Our 5 year old enjoyed being able to play with other children and the field was small so we could always see him.

The site is beautifully maintained and well kept, the owners certainly ensure that facilities and grounds are kept immaculate. Facilities are good. The camping fields are all very level, plenty of space to set up and spread out. You’re given a quick tour of the site and places to fields when you arrive so you can make a good choice. Its located in a very quite spot but with easy reach of the nearby town with plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants handy (walking distance, about a mile away) plus bust stops about 8 mins walk to get to Saunton beach, Croyde or further afield if you didn't fancy driving. The closest beach is about 10 mins drive/bus ride away and is huge. After a busy day exploring this is the perfect site to rest and chill out, and if you have kids they have plenty of space to make friends and burn off any energy they might have. (The owners recommended one of the fields as being more ‘family’, so expect other fields are even quieter if you don't have kiddies). Would recommend.

We have just returned from this spotless campsite, beautifully clean, friendly, and with lots of little extras which make all the difference. Highly recommended thank you!
From the host
Based near Saunton in Devon, Secret Spot Camping is a small, family-run campsite. It is the owners own home - they do not wish to be over run so there are no signs etc. to attract passing trade. Booking Online is the only option. Once booked, campers are sent directions - it's actually not far at all from the main road however unmarked and hidden from sight! - It's the perfect place to getaway and relax yet close to the beaches of Saunton, Croyde and Putsborough. - The Campsite itself has beautiful gardens, butterflies and birds. It overlooks fields to the back of Saunton Sand Dunes. It is a 15 minute stroll into Braunton but transport is better for the short hop to the Beach. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid back, the perfect place to chill out and forget about the modern world!
Nearby attractions
The Sandy/Surf Beaches of Saunton Sands, Croyde and Putsborough are just along the road.. all with plenty of Surf School options. A little further afield the lovely sandy beaches of Woolacombe Sands and Westward Ho! There are great walks to the deserted (even in summer) far end of Saunton Beach (Crow Point). There is excellent flat Cycling around Braunton Marshes and The Tarka Trail. On our doorstep there is the wonderful Dunescape of Braunton Burrows - This area of Special Scientific Interest is a Biosphere Reserve which covers 4 square miles of Sand Dunes! It contains many rare species of plant life, wild foxes and deer, and is rich in nature and history. (World War 2 - Assault Training for D-Day). It's a great place to explore and you can walk for miles and hardly see a soul even at the height of Summer! There are also many other places to visit.. Ilfracombe & Lundy Island, Exmoor, Clovelly to name but a few..  There are also many Devon Cream Teas to be sampled - Cream on First!
Food and drink
Nearby Braunton has become quite a "Foodies" Paradise!T here are two excellent Fish & Chips shops .  Squires (01271 815533) brings folk from miles around, both for its Takeaway and it's Sit-Down Restaurant. South16 has recently won awards too. Wild Thyme and Riverside do excellent Breakfasts. There are several Restaurants, At One, Riverside and SQ spring to mind. There are Seven Pubs which all serve food and most have Live Music. In Croyde Village of course there is The Thatch (01271 890349) - possibly the most famous pub in Devon along with Billy Budd's and The Manor. Braunton also has 2 Chinese & 1 Indian Takeaway plus the largest Supermarket in the area (Tesco's). There are several Surf Shops although none as good as Croyde Surf Shop (The Little Pink Shop) -01271890453 where there is a large selection of New & Secondhand Surfboards & Wetsuits. You can also pre-book a large selection of Surf Hire equipment www.croyde-surf-hire.co.uk
