We have a shared under cover space and also an outdoor fire-pit to gather more than 20 people comfortably. There is a simple compost loo for your use with hand-washing and dish washing area outside. And the rest is all Mother nature! There is no running water or drinking water. You will need to bring your own. No electricity points or WIFI are in the campsite and no masts nearby so enjoy the EMF cleanse. Whether you chose to stay in the ancient woodland or the herbal pasture, you will feel the benefits of reconnecting with yourself in nature, breathing the clean air and hearing the birds singing. The parking is 800m away and there is minimal tractor use so you can imagine yourself roaming the fields and forest of England in days gone by. Fitness required. Penn Meadow Farm is a beautiful 145 acre, family farm, nestled perfectly into the Chiltern Hills area of outstanding natural beauty. We’re just a 5 minute walk across our grassy fields to the oldest free-house pub in England (The Royal Standard of England) Say hello to our resident alpacas, sheep, pigs, pigmy goats, flock of 250 sheep and of course our lovely boarder collies. Pets: If you bring pets, ensure they are well-behaved, kept on a leash or have impeccable recall, and cleaned up after. Do not allow your pet to enter another camper's space. Quiet time: Maintain quiet hours between 11pm and 7am. All music must stop by 10pm, and noise should be minimal after 11pm. Campfires: Penn Meadow Farm allows fires; please use existing scorched areas if possible rather than creating new ones. Never leave any fires unattended and ensure they are completely extinguished when finished. Wipe your feet prior to entering the Bell tents to remove any coal that may have become attached. Cars/vehicles: Cars and vehicles can be on the field but should move minimally and always under 5mph. Car stereos should not be used for music entertainment. Drugs and Alcohol: Drug use is prohibited, and violators will be asked to leave. Consume alcohol responsibly, and do not drive or move your vehicle after consuming alcohol. We do not typically book Large non-family groups unless they are seeking a calm and peaceful stay. These groups must have authorization prior to the visit.

The place to find all this is The Meadow at Waples Mill, an Essex farm site between Chelmsford and Dunmow (and about 15 minutes’ drive from both). This family-friendly site is handy for walks on the Essex Way and other local footpaths, and tractor and trailer rides around the farm are organised on alternate days to give guests a glimpse into agricultural life. Activities complete for the day, it's time to chill out, and that should be easy here – all pitches have access to toilets and hot showers in a trailer close by, and firepits are provided so you can have a safe campfire (with wood available to buy on site and a great farm shop 10 minutes’ drive away for fireside snacks). Pitches themselves are large (please note only one tent per pitch is allowed), well kept and well spaced within a meadow that backs onto the River Roding. Dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of places to take them for a walk nearby. London folk looking for a quick escape to the countryside, this is a place to bear in mind – it’s only about an hour and quarter by road from the city.

A small family run site in Weston-on-the Green village located with a local pub 5 minutes walk away and on site cafe. The site also has newly refurbished toilet and shower facilities. Amazing location to access Oxford city and easy access to M40 (Junction 9). Good things await for those who grab a berth at Weston Caravan and Campsite, in the Oxfordshire village of Weston-on-the-Green. For starters, space seekers should be pleased to see that there’s plenty of breathing room around this former dairy farm – excellent news for kids or dogs that need a bit of haring-about time after being cooped up in the car. Depending on where you’ve plonked down you may find that your nearest neighbours are the resident beef cattle, sheep or horses; it’s worth keeping your eyes open for sightings of the hedgehogs that often scuttle about the place too. Perhaps most crucially for those whose stomachs dictate a site’s success is the presence of a café that serves up a tempting range of freshly cooked goodies: breakfasts (no rush – they’re served all day), salads, cakes and coffees, plus cheeses, pies and the like to take away. And the crème de la crème – literally: homemade ice cream in up to 16 (yes, a lipsmacking 16) different flavours. Evening appetites can be sated with a barbecue out on the field, or trotting off to the local pub five minutes’ walk away. The site added a new toilet and shower block in 2018. And how to get to this little slice of rural loveliness? The village is just a few minutes’ drive from the A34 and Junction 9 of the M40, making it both a useful stopover on cross-country voyages and a handy spot for Oxfordshire breaks (perhaps taking in Oxford, Blenheim Palace or bagging bargains in Bicester).

I stayed at this campsite one night, and overall, it was a really peaceful experience. The site is quiet and truly gives you that immersive outdoor feeling—you really feel like you’re out in nature. You can hear birdsong all around, and there’s no traffic or city noise—just calm. The facilities were also very different; the toilets, in particular, were compost toilets—no smells at all, was a different experience. My only minor downside is that the field itself is pretty steep—so if you’re not a fan of inclines, that might be a concern. But aside from that, it’s a fantastic spot for a quiet night under the stars.

Weekend Trip to Hook Farm Campsite

We stayed two nights in our tent and loved the peaceful surroundings and beautiful nature. The campsite was very spacious, and the toilets were strategically located so you didn't have to walk far. The same went for the water taps. Finding a flat surface was definitely a challenge, as the whole field is more or less on a slope, which we had expected in advance. The owners/camp staff were very friendly and helpful, and other visitors to the campsite were considerate and quiet after dark. We didn't know it was a 'music-free' campsite, but we didn't mind that at all, and we enjoyed the sounds of nature instead. The showers were a bit of a walk, but they were spacious and had hot water. We also loved that bonfires were allowed and that you could buy logs, kindling, and fire starters on site. The 2 pm check-out time was perfect, as we could enjoy our morning and leave without a rush. We also heard The Cat Inn, which is nearby, has delicious food, but you have to book in advance, which we didn't, so we will need to check it out next time. We will definitely be back!

Great experience. Easy to find, directions were clear. Very hospitable hosts, it was always easy to find someone if we had any queries. Busy with lots of families but still big enough that we could have a quiet peaceful pitch (staying as a couple, no kids/pets). Facilities were clean and great to use. Would stay again.

My 5 year old and I had a great time camping at The Barn KT9. Getting there and setting up was easy, with clear directions. The nearby cafe, woods, and pub were easy walks away. The site was quiet late at night, and having our own firepit and BBQ was a real bonus, as well as real flushing loos. Would recommend as an easily accessible (from London) campsite. Could do with slightly better ground underfoot for walking and running around.

I wanted a nice peaceful site that was easily accessible (the farm track to the field was a bit bumpy but my Zafira was ok) plenty of space and I got just that, there was a small wood behind me with plenty of free wood to burn, the toilets for a camp site were amazing cleaner than a lot of hotels I have stayed in, would I recommend this site definitely, would I stay here again definitely. The host met me at the house and was very pleasant and the burgers were great too, top notch.
