Just north of Leeds and at the gateway to the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Harrogate is a Victorian spa town that people visit to indulge in the soothing waters. Campers wanting to stay in Harrogate have plenty of options both within and around the town. Harrogate is also an easy base for exploring Nidderdale as well as the national parks a little further away, with the added bonus of being able to indulge in a spa after a busy day in the hills and on the trails.

If heading into Harrogate on a camping holiday, you might like to start your exploration with a visit to the Royal Pump Room Museum, which tells the story of how the town's tourism was built on water. And if you fancy a health boost, how about heading to the Turkish Baths in the Royal Bath House? It's the only remaining part of a larger complex where visitors can relax in hot rooms and plunge pools or try a treatment or two.

Modern shops make up Harrogate’s high street, meaning it's a great place to pick up both supplies and souvenirs or grab a bite to eat. The most famous among the Harrogate eateries is Betty's Tea Room, which has been serving afternoon teas for 100 years.

In addition, Harrogate is a surprisingly green town surrounded by The Stray, a 200-acre green space offering parkland, woodland, and a boating lake. But for wilder adventures, head out to the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

With a private valley, formed in the last ice age, acres of land and woodland to explore, our farm has a very special feeling which has been mentioned by every visitor. Occupied by some beautiful wildlife, including buzzards and owls, deer, badgers and foxes. The Wagons have a grass roof, firepits, sleep 4 (in double bunk format), they are hand-made from reclaimed materials salvaged from the local town and other areas, double skinned and insulated with sheeps wool. They have a 2-ring gas-burner in the cute kitchen area, dining table and seating, and are the perfect home away from home. All the decor is vintage, including cuttlery, crockery and even the childrens teddy's. Being on the doorstep of Dalby Forest, there are hours of entertainment to be had. You can follow the stream at the bottom of the valley to the River Derwent or venture into the surounding woods. We can provide a guest pass (free access) for Dalby Forest. The Wagons are not powered by electricity and are romantically lit by candles and oil lamps. Heated by cast iron gas heaters.

Scafell England's highest mountain is close by as are a number of Wainwrights. Nearby is Muncaster Castle and Gardens with its Hawk and Owl Centre, also Ravenglass, a Roman port.  You can ride up the Eskdale Valley on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Perhaps take a stroll to Stanley Ghyll waterfall. There are cafes at both terminuses with a museum in Ravenglass where nearby you can sample Ravenglass Ice Cream. Wasdale and Ennerdale are close by both valleys having cafes and pubs.

My car had issues with the exhaust box and Cathryn was able to help out by calling a local person to have a look at it which was very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed for the stay. Weekend Trip to Bickley Rigg Farm Glamping Wagons

We loved our night at Bickley Rigg wagons. We stayed in Oxo wagon, which has a beautiful bunk bed with cupboard bed beneath, and it’s full of vintage curios, china and oil lanterns. We enjoyed the views across the valley, a campfire, delicious local produce in our welcome pack (especially the bacon), learning how to use the storm lamps and watching rabbits on the hill from our beds in the morning. Feel refreshed and inspired. Be aware toilets and facilities are very much off grid composting ones. Bruce was welcoming and helpful despite his kids being ill- and hard to believe he’s built all the wagons himself- this is obviously a labour of love.

My daughter and I just returned from a 2 night stay. The accommodation, the view, the hospitality and the lovely little extra touches made us feel so welcome and exceeded all expectations. The accommodation was clean and bright and had everything we needed and more. Emma was a superb host and nothing was too much trouble. What an absolutely perfect getaway in the quiet, watching the sunrise and the sunset with the sounds of the birds, seeing the rabbits running around. Simply cannot recommend this place enough for couples or families.

Where to go

Nidderdale AONB

With the Yorkshire Dales National Park to its north, Nidderdale AONB is a beautiful landscape of moorlands, valleys, flower-covered woodlands, and rolling farmland. It’s a short distance from Harrogate so campers can visit on a day trip or stay at campsites and glampsites within the AONB itself. Many accommodation experiences around here are set on private farmland.

Yorkshire Dales National Park

Campers hanging around Harrogate may find it worthwhile to spend some time in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to enjoy the stargazing opportunities around here. Thanks to its rural location and distance from large towns, the night skies are very dark and this park has been designated a Dark Sky Reserve. By day, explore the hills, valleys, waterfalls, ravines, and villages on foot, and by night, ditch the tent for a cosy spot with a view of the night sky.

North York Moors National Park

Visitors to inland Harrogate who are seeking some beach time might want to head to the coast of the North York Moors National Park. While the park covers a large area in northeastern North Yorkshire, the coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough (just south of the national park) provide plenty of seaside camping options for a lazy time at the beach, especially in summer.

When to go

Harrogate is in North Yorkshire, which experiences a generally cool climate. Tent and caravan camping will be most comfortable in the summer, and some seaside campsites (especially around nearby Whitby or Scarborough) are only operational in season. However, Harrogate is a nice place to visit year-round, thanks to its warm spa waters, so choose your camping or glamping accommodation to suit the seasonal climate.
