Camping in Nidderdale AONB

·

Spanning from just north of Leeds up to Wensleydale, the Nidderdale AONB’s 233 square miles yield more of the same valley-divided moorland that the Dales has. It also boasts beauty spots like Brimham Rocks’ wondrous rock formations, stunning ruined abbeys, and historic market towns. Campers should start in Nidderdale valley itself—there are great campsites to be found near How Stean Gorge, plus hikes like the long-distance Six Dales Way, traversing the whole AONB, and Nidderdale Way, a 53-mile circular trail taking in the area’s best scenery.

Time for a slice of the simple life? Grab a peaceful Lake District pitch at Church Lane Campsite and immerse yourselves in proper scenic countryside with few distractions. This back to basics site has life’s essentials in place – in the form of drinking water, toilets and showers – but hasn’t gone overboard with other facilities, so you’ll simply be left to set up your space and soak up the gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. Pitches here are on grass with trees around the field to provide a bit of shelter and shade – and the views are pretty much green as far as you can see. This setting gives the place a remote atmosphere that’s well suited to adventurous travellers, nature lovers and serenity-seeking couples or families. That said, it’s not actually all that remote – handily, you’ll be able to drive to Kendal in about 10 minutes for cultural attractions, shops and places to eat, and popular Windermere is about the same distance in the other direction. Closer still are a smart rural restaurant and the little village of Crook, a mile away and the home of the local pub – both excellent options for a good feed.

Our three, brand new wood and canvas yurts are nestled in our private, woodland hotel garden beside the beautiful conservation (SSSI) river of Scandal Beck. Just a short drive from The Lake District, The Yorkshire and Durham Dales as well as The Scottish Border, we are perfectly located for you to explore. The yurts themselves are individually decorated with full size furniture, electricity and double beds. The yurts are all located in the garden of The Black Swan Hotel, Ravenstonedale, a multi award-winning hotel, restaurant and bar; recipient of 2 AA Rosettes as well as AA pub of the year for England 2018/19. As part of your stay in our yurts you will receive a full cooked breakfast and buffet option included in the price for 2 people in our hotel restaurant. We like to think of ourselves as a cosy home from home with a relaxed dining atmosphere throughout. We are very dog friendly in the hotel, restaurant, bar and yurts so please bring your furry family members. Our beautiful woodland is also home to red squirrels (which are seen daily), protected, freshwater crayfish in the river, an otter (seen very infrequently but the nemesis of our ducks), 6 Indian runner ducks, free range chickens and our two cockerels! (Dogs are very welcome but are to be kept on a lead whilst in the woodland itself). We are very dog friendly and charge an additional fee of £15 for 1 dog/ £20 for 2 dogs for an additional cleaning fee and for some dog friendly goodies such as poop bags and treats. The price of this yurt is based on an occupancy of 2 people. Any other people who will be staying on the sofa bed will add a charge of £40 per person per night for breakfast and their stay. All yurts come with electrical battery pack, chargeable lanterns, tea/coffee, homemade biscuits, log burning stoves, towels, full breakfast included from the hotel, an outdoor seating area and access to our outdoor toasty warm woodland shower as well as our very cute, wooden toilet cabin. With a private valley, formed in the last ice age, acres of land and woodland to explore, our farm has a very special feeling which has been mentioned by every visitor. Occupied by some beautiful wildlife, including buzzards and owls, deer, badgers and foxes. The Wagons have a grass roof, firepits, sleep 4 (in double bunk format), they are hand-made from reclaimed materials salvaged from the local town and other areas, double skinned and insulated with sheeps wool. They have a 2-ring gas-burner in the cute kitchen area, dining table and seating, and are the perfect home away from home. All the decor is vintage, including cuttlery, crockery and even the childrens teddy's. Being on the doorstep of Dalby Forest, there are hours of entertainment to be had. You can follow the stream at the bottom of the valley to the River Derwent or venture into the surounding woods. We can provide a guest pass (free access) for Dalby Forest. The Wagons are not powered by electricity and are romantically lit by candles and oil lamps. Heated by cast iron gas heaters.

Nidderdale AONB camping guide

Where to go

How Stean Gorge

Almost certainly Nidderdale’s most important outdoors hub is this narrow limestone gorge near Lofthouse. Drive, bike, or hike up from Pateley Bridge via Gouthwaite Reservoir to partake in canyoning, navigating via ferrata, gorge scrambling, or rock climbing. The activity centre here has a campsite, and others sit nearby with convenient facilities.

Brimham Rocks

At Brimham Rocks, 100 million-year-old boulders sheer out of the heather moorland in formations whose names evocatively intimate their bizarre shapes: the Dancing Bear, the Gorilla, and the Smartie Tube. This spectacular Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) lies 10 miles northwest of Harrogate, and is a highlight of the Nidderdale Way hiking trail. The closest campsites sit near Pateley Bridge to the west.

Masham & Around

Masham is a likeable market town toward the northern extent of Nidderdale AONB on Yorkshire’s most famous dale, Wensleydale. Its two breweries, arts and crafts galleries, variety of places to eat and drink, and camping and caravan park just east of town ensure it’s a great base for fans of under-canvas sleeping. The 50-mile circular Ripon Rowel Walk passes town and largely follows the banks of the two rivers converging in Masham, the Ure, and the Burn.

Jervaulx Abbey

One of Yorkshire’s great medieval abbeys, Jervaulx Abbey sits near Nidderdale AONB’s boundary within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The splendid 12th-century Cistercian ruin features a small camping and caravanning site within its walled estate beside the River Ure. You can pick up the Six Dales trail, which runs right across the AONB from north to south, right outside.
