Almost entirely surrounded by the Peak District National Park boundary and on the dividing line between the Dark Peak and White Peak areas, Buxton is an ideal base for campers. The town offers hikers, bikers, and campers easy access to some of the most scenic spots in the area, where there are numerous walking and cycling trails, as well as opportunities for rock climbing and abseiling. Meanwhile, Buxton itself is famous for its thermal waters and spas, Victorian and Georgian architecture, and the Poole’s Cavern caves. A few campsites and caravan parks dot the town with many more to found in the Peak District.

Despite being in the very middle of a landlocked county, Buxton’s fortunes are very much built on water. There is, of course, the branded spring water that bubbles up and gets bottled here, but that’s only part of the story of this spa town. The Romans, the Georgians, and the hotel builders of today have all tried to make the most of Buxton’s thermal waters. For visitors, this means elegant Georgian buildings that are well worth a look around. Base yourself at a Buxton campsite or in the countryside around it, and you can explore both town and countryside.

Simply wandering around Buxton’s elegant streets is enough to fill an afternoon when you’re camping in this part of the Peak District. The Georgian Crescent, the Edwardian Opera House, the Pavilion Gardens—you might just feel like you’re on the set of a period drama. Plus, there are plenty of tea rooms for Derbyshire cream tea. For a slice of Bakewell pudding though, you’ll want to head 20 minutes down the road to Bakewell itself—arrive under your own steam by cycling on the Monsal Trail to really feel like you’ve earned it. This traffic-free route follows a former railway line that once linked Buxton with Bakewell and is suitable for horse riders, runners, and wheelchair users too. From there, it’s just a further 10 minutes (by car) to reach Chatsworth, the seat of the Duke of Devonshire and a magnificent stately home.

A fantastic place to camp. The facilities were great the welcome was lovely and the views amazing. Will definitely be back for a longer stay. Linda and hubby were very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. The facilities were clean and modern. The directions were clear and easy to follow. We enjoyed the fire pit and listening to the owls late into the evening. Will recommend to anyone looking to visit the area, and the eggs were delicious too.

⸻ White Peak Camping is such a beautiful and peaceful spot — absolutely loved our stay. The campsite is perfectly situated with easy access to stunning walks all around. The toilets were decent and clean, and the little phone-charging points are such a thoughtful touch if you need them. We also really appreciated the free fire pits, which made the evenings super cosy. The owner, Janice, was great and very communicative, and her son Matt even came to check on us to make sure we didn’t get stuck with our van after the storm the night before. Really lovely people. One thing to note is that they place strong emphasis on keeping noise down — no loud music at all — which we actually loved, because it made the whole place incredibly quiet, calm, and relaxing. Highly recommend White Peak Camping if you’re looking for a beautiful, peaceful countryside escape. Thanks, Antje and Jay

What a gorgeous place! The perfect place for a calm refuge to reset and re-enter life restored. Lovely kind hosts, beautiful views and walks straight from the roundhouse enjoyed by us and our cat Blue. Absolutely magical. We have just come back from a campervan 2 night trip to Panpwnton Campsite. We had a lovely time, it was very quiet as we were the only ones staying…. Probably due to the weather! This meant we got a great spot right next to the river which was perfect. The facilities were good. The location was great. We did a walk straight from the site on to part of Offa Dykes path and along to the Knuclas viaduct, great views along the way. We had thought we might get the train back just for fun, but they don’t run very often (would have been a 2hr wait) so walked back instead. Site also easy walking distance to the local pub for an evening meal which was good too. Very Dark walk back that evening meant for some great star gazing:-)

I literally never write reviews for anything even when I triple promise I will but this place is just that awesome. It's got all the essentials so makes it comfortable (even on a stormy Oct night first time camping alone with my daughter!) But not too much that you feel like you're cheating- the whole point for me was for it to feel challenging, hey you survived that dear daughter you can do anything (without her dying from exposure). The toilets were nicer and cleaner than all weatherspoons loos, 2 charging ports for phones and a sink, lots of bins for rubbish and a gorgeous site with beautiful views (& a cute little swing). The views of the peak district were just stunning on the way down too. Janice was amazing - she walked down to us in the pouring rain (after a full day's work) to check we had everything! We'll definitely be back again, possibly when it's a bit warmer

Lovely field to camp in, beautiful views around the farm in the morning, great building to chill out in, useful facilities to store and heat food. Also loved the honesty shop with delicious pastries. A lovely rural quiet place to stay. Fantastic views and lovely walks right on the doorstep. Beautiful rural quiet spot with fabulous views. Great value for money. Would 100% definitely recommend. A nice touch was the picnic benches and a tree swing. The toilets were extremely clean and fully flushable with running water and hand soap/handtowel. 5* from me!

Great spot, I was the only camper. Hiked 10km with my dog, put my tent up, cooked evening meal on my trangia on one of the wooden tables that are there, could have walked say 10 minutes to the pub but couldn’t be arsed, so just sat quietly with the dog enjoying the peace and quiet! Toilets are clean and there’s a cold water sink for washing up which is also v clean. Met the farmer on the way in, very pleasant chap. Great place! Hiked back to my car this morning. Lovely break from work!

I visited solo (motorbike camping) mid-week and I was the only one here! I chose this site as I wanted a basic, quiet site to stopover for a night. It provided just that, so clean and quiet and such a pleasant stay. Granted it is next to a working farm so there were a few cows chattering through the night but all adds to the charm. Clean toilets (x3) and wash up block, no shower or hot water but not an issue for this stay. Free fire pit and wood was available for purchase although I did have my own this time. Overall a great, back to basics and quiet location located in a lovely part of the world ☺️

Where to go

Peak District National Park

The Peak District National Park surrounds Buxton, although the town itself is not within the park boundaries. Its highest peak, the 2,077-foot Kinder Scout, is a literal standout, while the rest of the park is characterised by high moorland plateaus, steep limestone valleys, and cliffy outcrops. Wild camping isn’t allowed in the park, as landowner permission is required, but campers can stay in Buxton and explore the walking and biking trails on day excursions.

The National Forest

Large swathes of the Midlands have been damaged by mining, heavy industry, and deforestation over the centuries, so the National Forest project aims to restore large-scale forests throughout the Midlands, spanning Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire. The forest is south of Buxton and can be visited on a day trip, or campers can stay at campsites, caravan parks, lodges and log cabins, and glamping sites closer to the National Forest.

Cannock Chase AONB

South of Buxton and between the towns of Cannock and Stafford in Staffordshire, the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has been nicknamed the jewel of the West Midlands. It was the hunting forest of legendary William the Conqueror almost 1,000 years ago, and visitors can walk, cycle, or ride horses in the woodlands and alongside canals to learn about its history. Campers can stay at caravan parks within the area or in Cannock and Stafford for easy access to the AONB.

When to go

Spring and summer are the best times to camp in and around Buxton and the Peak District, when the days are longest and the weather is most pleasant for camping and outdoor activities. Winters are cold, especially as Buxton and many other area villages are at a slight elevation, and snow is not uncommon in the Peak District. Some campsites and caravan parks close for the winter season, but booking a cabin or cottage is possible outside of summer.
