4. The Naked Mitrewort

Learn more about this land:Welcome to The Naked Mitrewort! The site is located on the scrubby shores of North Frontenac's only Provincially Significant Wetland: Mud Lake. The wetland is part of Ontario's Mississippi River system, which stretches 200km from Mackavoy Lake to the Ottawa River. The wetland is a hotspot for biodiversity and indigenous history and is located just outside of the hamlet of Ardoch.This would be a great stopover site for a cyclist exploring North Frontenac's looping roads or for anyone who was unable to book a site at some of the more popular provincial parks like Bon Echo, Sharbot and Silver Lakes, or Frontenac. The terrain between the water and campsite is low, moist and scrubby with many trees that have fallen as a result of a big storm a few years ago. I just bought this property in Oct. 2020 and have done very few improvements since then (I have exciting things planned though!). There is an outhouse for your bathroom needs as well as a little platform near the water, but there isn't a clear path to the water yet, so tread carefully. The platform (and outhouse actually...) is on its way to being rotten, but it's good enough for a few chairs, but not a tent.  There is also a little swimming hole on the nearby crown land which would require swimming shoes or socks (sharp rocks), but it's a pretty neat place to snorkel as there is still evidence of the river's logging legacy. This spot is even more difficult to access but I will make a path eventually. The site is a little close to the road, so you will hear occasional vehicles driving by as well as other human activities in the distance, but it is generally a very peaceful location. You will have to forage for firewood, but there is no shortage of it as you will see. Keep fires small and, although it is very satisfying, please don't push over rotten snags (dead standing trees), these are important for woodpeckers and other creatures! Same with flowers, let's just take pictures and not pick them, some may not grow back! As you can see, I have a lot of work ahead of me making paths, clearing the view, etc. If you have chainsaw experience (or, even better, sawmill! or both!) and want to clear some deadfall in exchange for a spot to camp or park your RV (no hookup) for a weekend or week, send me a message and we can discuss possibilities. It doesn't always have to be cold hard cash. I am open to any ideas that would fit into this sort of description.Because this is still such a rustic site, I am offering you complimentary day passes to Lancaster's Resort on Mississagagon Lake. Here you will have access to the shower, washrooms, beach, trails, wifi, boat launch, kayak and canoe rentals ($25 per vessel per day) and more. Parking is at the lodge, just provide me with your licence plate number and that'll be all you need to enjoy the resort's amenities.There is a public boat launch for the Mississippi River right at the bridge - 4 mins drive heading northeast on River Rd. - limited parking.And in case you are wondering, The Naked Mitrewort takes its name from Mitella nuda, a tiny unassuming perennial plant found in wet riparian forests throughout Canada and the US and is abundant around the property.I look forward to hosting you!

We are confident you won't want to leave the farm, but in case you choose to explore beyond our 98 acres there is lots to still see and do within only a short drive. We are located close to Buckhorn, where you can explore more lakes, pick your own berries or visit pumpkin patches, pick up groceries or enjoy the restaurants in Buckhorn.  Also, in nearby Bobcaygeon you can find world-class shopping and dining, parks, beaches, festivals, a heritage village, and even more lakes. One hour north of us is Haliburton, with the Haliburton Forest and Wolf visitation Centre, Sir Sam's ski resort, shops and restaurants, and Sir Sandford Fleming's college of Fine Arts. Lakefield is only 35 minutes away offering shopping, a world famous literary festival, fine dining, and antique shows most weekends. Trent University is only 40 minutes south, in Peterborough where you can watch Peterborough Petes play hockey, attend free music festivals in the summer months, experience the best restaurants around, shop, see a movie, watch the boats in the Lift Locks, a World Heritage, visit the canoe museum, skate on the canal, and much more.

Learn more about this land:Welcome to The Naked Mitrewort! The site is located on the scrubby shores of North Frontenac's only Provincially Significant Wetland: Mud Lake. The wetland is part of Ontario's Mississippi River system, which stretches 200km from Mackavoy Lake to the Ottawa River. The wetland is a hotspot for biodiversity and indigenous history and is located just outside of the hamlet of Ardoch.This would be a great stopover site for a cyclist exploring North Frontenac's looping roads or for anyone who was unable to book a site at some of the more popular provincial parks like Bon Echo, Sharbot and Silver Lakes, or Frontenac. The terrain between the water and campsite is low, moist and scrubby with many trees that have fallen as a result of a big storm a few years ago. I just bought this property in Oct. 2020 and have done very few improvements since then (I have exciting things planned though!). There is an outhouse for your bathroom needs as well as a little platform near the water, but there isn't a clear path to the water yet, so tread carefully. The platform (and outhouse actually...) is on its way to being rotten, but it's good enough for a few chairs, but not a tent.  There is also a little swimming hole on the nearby crown land which would require swimming shoes or socks (sharp rocks), but it's a pretty neat place to snorkel as there is still evidence of the river's logging legacy. This spot is even more difficult to access but I will make a path eventually. The site is a little close to the road, so you will hear occasional vehicles driving by as well as other human activities in the distance, but it is generally a very peaceful location. You will have to forage for firewood, but there is no shortage of it as you will see. Keep fires small and, although it is very satisfying, please don't push over rotten snags (dead standing trees), these are important for woodpeckers and other creatures! Same with flowers, let's just take pictures and not pick them, some may not grow back! As you can see, I have a lot of work ahead of me making paths, clearing the view, etc. If you have chainsaw experience (or, even better, sawmill! or both!) and want to clear some deadfall in exchange for a spot to camp or park your RV (no hookup) for a weekend or week, send me a message and we can discuss possibilities. It doesn't always have to be cold hard cash. I am open to any ideas that would fit into this sort of description.Because this is still such a rustic site, I am offering you complimentary day passes to Lancaster's Resort on Mississagagon Lake. Here you will have access to the shower, washrooms, beach, trails, wifi, boat launch, kayak and canoe rentals ($25 per vessel per day) and more. Parking is at the lodge, just provide me with your licence plate number and that'll be all you need to enjoy the resort's amenities.There is a public boat launch for the Mississippi River right at the bridge - 4 mins drive heading northeast on River Rd. - limited parking.And in case you are wondering, The Naked Mitrewort takes its name from Mitella nuda, a tiny unassuming perennial plant found in wet riparian forests throughout Canada and the US and is abundant around the property.I look forward to hosting you!

We are located close to Buckhorn, where you can explore more lakes, pick your own berries or visit pumpkin patches, pick up groceries or enjoy the restaurants in Buckhorn.  Also, in nearby Bobcaygeon you can find world-class shopping and dining, parks, beaches, festivals, a heritage village, and even more lakes. One hour north of us is Haliburton, with the Haliburton Forest and Wolf visitation Centre, Sir Sam's ski resort, shops and restaurants, and Sir Sandford Fleming's college of Fine Arts. Lakefield is only 35 minutes away offering shopping, a world famous literary festival, fine dining, and antique shows most weekends. Go for a hike up the mountain, meander along the streams, walk to the lake 15min down a beautiful country road. Enjoy what we have going on at the art barn where we host artists in residence studios, music jams, workshops and events. Enjoy an evening around your private campfire or perhaps join some folks gathered at the communal fire pit under the stars. Book a sauna session for an evening, and possibly a massage or healing session. There’s always something to do on this farm😋

Another fantastic camp stay at this beautiful farm! We loved our new spot on the property just as much as the last one. From the moment we arrived, the hosts welcomed us back with open arms, making us feel right at home. The magic of this place is all thanks to the incredible hosts who treat every guest like family. We had a great time visiting with the farm animals and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of their barn. The provided firewood was a thoughtful touch that made our nights around the campfire so much easier. The amenities are excellent; the outhouse was impeccably clean, and the dishwashing station made cleanup a breeze. This is truly a special place! <3

Always a pleasure tent camping at Middle Earth, this was our third time here, second time at the woodlands camp site! The fall colours were incredible and we got to hang out with the squirrels and toads. This spot is very private with lots of space for parking and tents, and a nice large fire ring. Definitely prepare the necessities for taking care of business in the wild!

It was a great spot to pitch a tent and unwind after a few days of fishing some Haliburton lakes. Easy to get to and Jennifer was a great and helpful host. The location is very scenic with the marsh and pond nearby and beautiful tall woods surrounding the site. We didn't get to meet Jennifer (we were too busy fishing all day) but she kept in contact and provided firewood as needed. The only downside I could think of was the barbecue on site didn't seem to have any propane, which was no big deal. We brought our own and actually didn't even know there would be one provided. The outhouse was a bit rustic, but for two guys living off the land it was a luxury to have a toilet at all. Lol. Would definitely go back!

Weekend Trip to Organic Flower Farm
Absolutely nothing negative could be said about this trip. From the host to the land to the location to the amenities - it was the perfect spot. Micheal - couldn't have had a better host – so friendly and positive and quick to respond – everything you would want in a host. The land was perfect for many tents (flat) with a nice fire pit and beautiful view of the barn (that was lit up) and the land around. The location was close to small towns - looking forward to exploring more than what we did on our next booking. Amenities - from the barn with the record player and ping pong table to the dish washing station to the hot tub (we didn't have time to enjoy but next time!) to the bathroom facility to the volleyball court to feeding the horses and sheep and the vegetable basket received on arrival. All around it was perfect and exactly what we needed. Looking forward to our next trip up there.

Camped with a group of 10, lots and lots of tent room! The land was absolutely gorgeous, spacious and very well upkeept. Theres a beautiful barn to hangout with that has lights when it gets dark, a ping pong table and lots of chairs and tablespace for meals. The flowers grown theyre are so pretty and the animals are so cute! They had a wood-burning hot tub and small cold plunge, super nice toilets and a shower, all with working water as well as a new outhouse installed that was nice. Theres some waterfalls super close by too. I highly recommend here, the stay was amazing, the host Michael is so friendly and the whole experience went so perfectly for our group! ❤️

Weekend Trip to Waterfield Ridge
This site is perfect for those passing through Halliburton, or just wanting a getaway from the city and connecting with nature. I only stayed 1 night with my biker friends, so we rode to the site. Site is extremely easy to find, and we are just a short trip to the main town for groceries or restaurants. The night time is where it really brings out the beauty of this site. The trees make a perfect vignette to the night sky, and we spent HOURS stargazing. Our host Jennifer was a saint! She’s super responsive! The only rough part was riding through the gravel/dirt roads, but that is nothing to be worried about. If you’re a good rider, you’ll manage. Highly recommend!

We have cared for this land for the last 20 years - and our ancestors did before us. We initially lived here on the land in a tiny home (before tiny homes existed?!) It is called "The Tamarack Shack" and is a 10x10 cabin that we built by hand. We lived there - without power or water for 3 years. It's still standing, but is home to many critters now. Prior to our stewardship - this 100 acres was a sheep and cattle farm - heavily overgrazed and needing some loving. We've spent the last 2 decades planting 25 000 trees, digging 3 ponds and erecting fencing and out buildings for 15 acres of pasture. Algonquin Provincial Park

Enjoy the nearly untouched woodlands of Algonquin Provincial Park, just 50 minutes away from Bancroft. As Canada’s first provincial park, it’s home to giant moose, racing rivers, quiet ponds, and scenic hiking trails that traverse its 7,600 square kilometres. Explore interpretive walking trails and canoe or kayak river rapids. In the winter, try dog sledding or summer camp in the wild backcountry. Nearby campgrounds and RV parks are available year-round as well.

Egan Chutes Provincial Park

Waterfalls and old forests fill Egan Chutes Provincial Park. Drive 15 miles from town to enjoy popular park activities like hiking, canoeing on the York River, and birding. Hikers can also find both easy and moderately challenging hikes. Then, try nearby cabin rentals, RV parks, and campgrounds offering convenient amenities like restrooms, firepits, and picnic areas.

Petroglyphs Provincial Park

Home to the largest concentration of the country’s indigenous rock carvings, Petroglyphs Provincial Park also offers pristine forests and famed blue-green waters at McGinnis Lake. Campers can peruse the carvings of humans and animals at The Teaching Rocks while hiking the surrounding landscape. Although the park does not offer camping or cabin rentals, these accommodations can be found nearby or back in Bancroft.

When to go

Campers enjoy visiting Bancroft year-round. Although summertime is popular, each season offers outdoor fun. June through August is peak camping season, which is complemented by activities like swimming, boating, and hiking.
