Olive Farm

40 sites · RVs, Tents100 acres · Murroon, VIC
Welcome to the Olive Farm! We are a working olive farm situated on the edge of the Otway Ranges, between Deans Marsh and Birregurra, 25 minutes to Lorne and the Great Ocean Road, and only a few kilometers from the famous Brae Restaurant. We are in a beautiful part of the world, so please remember to bring a toilet and take all your rubbish with you when you leave. Dogs are welcome, but please be aware that we are full of kangaroos, sheep, and other wildlife, so they may need to be placed on a leash for the safety of fellow campers and wildlife. Fires are permitted in fire pits, and wood is available to purchase on-site. We have a fragile ecosystem here, so we ask not to bring in wood and to purchase it off the farm. Olive oil from 2023 is available, and table olives harvested this year are in brine, ready to jar up. The table olives we have are Kalamata, Spanish Queens, and Jumbo Kalamata.

Erskine Falls Retreat

3 sites · RVs, Tents125 acres · Lorne, VIC
125 acre property on the fringe of the beautiful seaside town of Lorne. The bustling tourist town is home to some of Australia's finest wildlife including koala's, kangaroos, kookaburra's and wallabies... all of which are witnessed roaming around the property with undisturbed nonchalance. In addition to this wildlife, the natural landscape and scenery is one to behold, with lush green grass, waterfalls scattered around the area (including Erskine Falls just a 2 minute drive from the property) and the chance to cool off in the ocean with a short 10 minute drive into the township of Lorne. Your passage to Lorne is an extraordinary one to say the least, spoilt for choice with two incredible routes, the first is the unique and famous Great Ocean Road... exhibit beautiful waves, clear blue water and a road fit for a race-car track. The second route to Lorne is via small regional towns inland with endless rolling hills and healthy green landscapes as far as the eye can see and that's all before you hit Otway national park! This secluded property is special because it is situated in a remarkable position with the perks of both country and coastal living, not to mention unrivalled serenity... being 550m above sea level, snow isn't uncommon on the odd day during winter and surf is only 10 minutes away, so truly extraordinary. There are huge Trees approximately 200ft tall that tower over you in an area of the property we refer to as "valley of the kings" and some in excess of 300 years old. Witness small isolated gulleys (if the weather permits) and you're prepared for a little small hike into our wonderland. My family and I are situated in a modest farmhouse on the north side of the property, with our little camping spots for you scattered around the scenic high points. Water is provided on site, leave the area as you found it. Otherwise get your adventure started.

Matthews Creek Farm

2 sites · RVs, Tents30 acres · Murroon, VIC
Matthew’s Creek Hipcamp is a 30 acre north-facing slope looking out from the Otway Ranges towards the volcanic Western Districts. Behind us lies the grand splendour of the Great Ocean Road with all it’s wonderful attractions. (www.visitgreatoceanroad.org.au) This camp offers a great place to park or pitch the tent and explore everything the region has on offer. We guarantee privacy, seclusion, security, peace, and tranquility. Although, there is Rocky, the Light Sussex rooster to add to the atmosphere! There is patchy mobile and internet at the sites. It is best to arrive in daylight, we are difficult to find in the dark. In the near vicinity we have the Pennyroyal Raspberry farm and Hero’s winery. For lunch or dinner there is The Store in Dean’s Marsh, Dar Teta and the Forrest Brewing Company in Forrest, and Gentle Annie in Pennyroyal who provide grazing platters and picnics featuring many of the locally produced treats found on the Otway Harvest Trail (www.otwayharvesttrail.org.au). At this stage we have 2 camping sites, the Goat Paddock, suitable for larger vehicles and RVs, and the Old Orchard, more suited for tents only due to access issues. Welcome to Matthews Creek Hipcamp!

Clear Springs

1 site · RV, Tent20 acres · Lorne, VIC
Clear Springs is a very special spot, offering sweeping views over rolling hills, and across to the ocean. King Island lighthouse is visible on clear nights, and there are koalas and wallabies in abundance. Whilst we require you to BYO toilet, we do have hot shower, woodfired hot-tub, power, water and phone reception. The site is all-weather access, and is just a 7-minutes drive to the Apollo Bay township. Once you catch your breath after initially taking in the sweeping, majestic ocean views, you can find a spot to pitch your tent or park your van. You drive in through a locked farm gate into the fenced camp area. There is not an abundance of flat area, so may not suit if you need large level space. We don't accept multiple bookings, so the space is all yours. You can choose from a few different spots with near-level ground (choose grass or gravel). The site is open to the amazing ocean views to the south yet the area is nestled among mature trees to give privacy and shelter. There are very few houses dotted around the area and not a single busy road within earshot. There is 240v mains power (BYO lead and plug into switchboard). And a tank with spring water (natural and untreated, we've been drinking it for years) and a pressure pump (BYO hoses as needed). There is an outdoor gas-heated shower. We also have a woodfired hot tub available for guests, along with plenty of firewood supplied. Our listing is intended for people looking for a private, tranquil and well-serviced camping area with several bonuses such as firewood, power, water, telstra reception, and a hot tub. And no other guests to worry about. It's much more than a patch of grass! But please BYO toilet - this is mandatory - and leave no trace to allow other people to enjoy the beauty of our property. Sorry pets are not allowed.

Otways Farm Hideaway

2 sites · RVs, Tents200 acres · Kawarren, VIC
Green, tranquil and picturesque. Kangaroos and wallabies often emerge at dawn and dusk from beneath the 150-foot tall eucalypts of the Great Otway National Park along our farm's eastern boundary. Occasionally koalas nestle in trees around the camping area. You can swim in the unfenced dam, which is fed by a mountain spring on our 200-acre property. But please be aware that the unfenced dam is a drowning hazard for children, so we don't accept bookings that include children under 10 for public liability reasons. We've limited the number of campsites to 2 in an area that could host 200 (see both listings on Hipcamp of our 2 campsites at slightly different prices). If you would like even more seclusion, then you are welcome to book both sites so you can talk, drink and play music as late as you like, without having to consider another group of campers. This is a totally different holiday experience to a crowded beach resort, caravan park or camping ground. It's like a hideaway in the hills. Our livestock is the reason why we cannot allow pets on the farm, except for guide dogs and legally accredited assistance dogs. Even small dogs who haven't previously seen a cow can cause stampedes. Please also be aware that from mid-December to mid-April, the CFA enforces district-wide bans on campfires. Fortunately, gas stoves and gas barbecues are allowable, unless specific days are declared as total fire ban days due to extreme heat. Please note that wood-fired barbecues or burners, even if enclosed and fitted with a chimney, still present a spark/ember hazard across summer, so are not permitted. The owner is a member of the local CFA, so there are no exceptions to these fire restrictions. Also, no parties please. A portable flushable plastic toilet in a privacy tent is provided on the campsite. This toilet can be emptied and cleaned every second day by the host. Camping trailers and campervans work better on the sites than heavy caravans or motorhomes. Rain at any time of year can make heavy vehicles difficult to manoeuvre into position or tow out without getting bogged and causing major damage to the grass covering the campsites. The sites are on slight inclines, so levellers can be useful. It's also worth noting there is nowhere to empty caravan/motorhome toilets on or near our campsites (the nearest free toilet waste disposal facility is at Winchelsea, although there is a facility in Colac that requires a small payment). When camp-fires are permitted, guests can bring their own axe, saw or chainsaw to cut up deadwood near the campsites on the important and non-negotiable condition that using their tools is entirely at their own risk. Alternatively, bags of split firewood can be bought from local suppliers in the district or your hosts.

Caravan camping near Lorne with campfires guide

Overview

One of Australia’s finest beach destinations, Lorne is nestled around a bay and backed by dense bushland. Popular with surfers and holiday makers, the area has a sheltered beach, eateries for all budgets, and superb bushwalking trails (not to forget its many resident kookaburras). The town is 46 kilometres from Torquay, the official start of the Great Ocean Road, making it a perfect mid-way base to camp when taking your time along this winding coastal road. Choose a foreshore campsite with facilities, or opt for a wilderness experience in the Otway Ranges.

Where to go

Lorne and Around

Lorne has a scattering of campgrounds and private parks, many set on the Erskine River and conveniently located in town. Those who prefer to escape town can find tranquility and bush walks to waterfalls just outside of Lorne, while grassy campsites can also be found south of Lorne along the Great Ocean Road. Great coastal walks and birds are a boon here.

Wye River

Half an hour from Lorne is Wye River, one of the Great Ocean's Road's smallest hamlets. Even so, it offers big adventure thanks to its location between the Great Otway National Park and the ocean: birdwatching, surfing, mountain biking, and fishing.

Kennett River

A tiny hamlet and popular surfing mecca, Kennett River and its Kennett River Holiday Park are guaranteed places to spot koalas (plus king parrots, rosellas, and glow worms). Another bonus? The beach has a life-saving patrol.

Forrest

The tiny rural village of Forrest is a mountain bike hub, although its main highlight is Lake Elizabeth, home to the elusive platypus. Here you’ll also find beautiful trees, from mountain ash (Eucalyptus regnans, or Tasmanian oak) to manna gums.

When to go

While you can camp year-round at some (but not all) campsites in and around Lorne, it’s packed from 26 December to the end of January, during the Australian summer holiday season, and on Victorian school holidays. The rainiest and coldest months are June through August. Be aware of bushfire threats, especially from January to March.

Know before you go

  • While it’s only 142 kilometres from Melbourne to Lorne, allow at least three hours. The road is good but winding and strict speed limits apply.
  • Use the slow vehicle pull-ins on the road between Eastern View at Lorne. This enables other cars to pass so that you can enjoy the drive.
  • If you don’t have your own wheels, V-Line offers daily bus services from Melbourne to Apollo Bay that stop at points along the Great Ocean Road.
  • Campfires are generally prohibited, especially in summer. (Heed the bushfire warnings.)
