Our property contains the first road in and out of Colo - the original road is supported by hand built dry rock walls some of which are over 3 m high. Often referred to as convict built, but more likely built by freemen who were former convicts.
The property housed the load master's residence who controlled the cargo boats that docked to collect the valley’s produce. This was then transported back down the Colo River which flows into the Hawkesbury river and leads to Broken Bay following the coastline down to Old Sydney Town. The beach diagonally across the river was landed upon by members of the First Fleet’s exploratory scouting party on the lookout for quality farm land - some of which is still in production today.
Our property is on the uppermost reach of freshwater but with tidal influence. This deep water allows swimming and canoeing all year round. Our property is adjacent to the only council built canoe launching facilities on the Colo River.

Kayaks, fishing poles and crab pots provided.
Our own private residence is a separate apartment upstairs, there are no shared walls or internal stairs and you will have your own private entrance, however as it is a large, old wooden house you may at times hear us moving about upstairs, naturally we try to be as quiet as possible when we have guests visiting. We will leave you entirely to yourselves but if you do need any help or information or even a little guided walking tour of the locality we are very happy to accommodate you. Our sauna deck is a shared area which guests are welcome to use, heating the sauna takes an hour or two, so just let us know and we will get it all ready for you with fresh towels, scented oils and branches of freshly cut lavender or wormwood to create a beautiful ambience.

Weekend Trip to Halifax Hill
Lovely shack creatively situated on a rocky outcrop beside the McDonald river.
It has all the charm of a yesteryear hideaway. It’s an experience not a polished hotel, think secret mountain recluse, take your book, your art stuff and a bottle of wine.
we loved the bush views and sounds, the location and the quirk!
Swimming in the river near by, zipping into town for a coffee or beer and enjoying the cute town of St Albans. Loved it so much we can’t wait to come back!

I stayed at Steve’s camp recently and really enjoyed my time there overall. The location is great—nice and close to Sydney, with a good hike just up the road that makes it easy to explore the area.
Steve himself was an absolute legend! His brownies, stories, prizes, and local knowledge really added a special touch to the stay and made the experience more personal and fun.
A few things to note for future campers: the map could use an update as it was a bit hard to read, and the campsite is fairly close to the road, so you’ll hear some road noise at times. There’s also a bright streetlight that stays on all night, which might bother some people depending on which site they’re in. The walk to the bathroom at night or early morning can be a little awkward since it goes through other campsites.
Overall though, it was a great stay with a friendly vibe, good amenities, and an unbeatable location for a quick getaway from the city.

We loved our short stay at Fig Tree Hill. The site we had was tucked away in a beautiful spot a short walk from river. Steve was a great host and very knowledgeable about the area. I would absolutely stay at this site again. Helped to have a higher clearance vehicle to drive in closer to the particular site we were staying at

My family and I had a great time relaxing at the campsite. Steve was a brilliant host and we loved the brownies he brought us!
There is a bit of traffic on the road nearby but not too disturbing.
My only wish would be that the river access be made easier, the path down to the water is quite overgrown and steep, and the actual waterside area is not particularly inviting.

Always amazing to camp at the Colo River.It was for the second time i went there, and it is always great. Steve is incredibly friendly and welcoming , the brownies are absolutely amazing, and canoeing on the Colo River is hands down the best part. Such a beautiful, relaxing experience would definitely recommend!

This was a great property for those who want a remote camping feel! The facility was as described, and it was nice to have access to a toilet/shower. David came to introduce himself and told us about the property and the not infrequent koala sightings! While we didn’t see any during our stay, we did have a great time.

The place is ok overall. The kayaks were working well right next to the river, the view is nice but the quality of the camping site is regular. The bathroom is a latrine and campfires are not allowed. Is works well to get disconnected close to the city for one day.
