W.T. Farm?

3. W.T. Farm?

What makes W.T. Farm special is the diversity of textures of the landscape. We have great mountain top views, as well as, a deep holler with cliffs, rock outcroppings, and waterfalls. The fields are full of fruit and nut trees and there are 5 ponds. Each of these supports its own flora and fauna. I acquired stewardship of this land years ago and have developed perennial orchards wherever possible. I started with pears and have branched out into pawpaws, apples, persimmons, currants, black walnuts etc. and I boast that I planted the first commercial hickory oil orchard in the world. I am an eccentric horticulturalist and graft cultivar varieties onto existing trees like oaks, hickories, black walnuts, and even the maligned invasive honeysuckle, autumn olive and multiflora rose. Just last year I bought an adjoining farm that opened up 50 acres of more orchard planting. It is on top of the mountain and offers an expansive view of the valley and ridge system that defines our region. Funny thing is that because the land between the old farm and the new farm is divided by cliffs in the holler the only way to get from one to the other is a 12 minute drive or vigorous hiking. On this new land is a historic log cabin I am renovating that is said to be one of the original settler's cabin on the mountain. Because of the amount of tree fruit I grow and the varied landscape, there is a rich diversity of birds and animals to be seen. One of my favorite walks is along the cliffs to the top waterfall where there is a sweet wading pool. I have also built a number of ponds and four of them are quite swimmable. One has a dock and is where we spend much summer time refreshing and frolicking. The farm is also a small (very small) licensed farm winery and we make and sell traditional hard cider from our apples and pears. Our cider can be purchased along with our nut oils and flours and other farm produce you may not be familiar with. We live to eat. Coming here is a gastronomical adventure! I run the Acornucopia project from here and from it we are developing a foragers network that would very much suit the lifestyle of hipcampers. We pay foragers for wild nuts they gather. Also often there is an opportunity to work on the farm harvesting and processing food. Let me know if that is something you would like to do. Treely Yours, Bill

Wolf Creek Preserve

13. Wolf Creek Preserve

43mi from Bluefield · 1 site
Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway in rural, undeveloped West Virginia. Located in Monroe County, the Corn Crib is your own private, rustic cabin on 400 private acres. Enjoy rolling pastures, incredible views of the mountains, and swim in your own private, mile long stretch of creek. This tiny cabin has it all: off-grid lifestyle with on-grid amenities. Pets stay for FREE. Purchased 25 years ago, Wolf Creek Preserve is a 450 acre, private nature preserve. The Corn Crib is a former corn crib in which corn was stored and dried after harvest. The structure's underpinnings and external layout are from the late 1800s, but the structure was first renovated in 2004 as a hunting cabin. The Corn Crib was transformed into its current tiny home-like design in 2017 with details being added well into 2025. The structure was part of an old farm with a series of buildings, including an old Victorian home that was once a stagecoach stop, and hotel in the 1800s. This property sits along the banks of Wolf Creek, around which we own the majority of its land. There are long stretches of creek, pasture, and woodland to explore. This listing is a rustic, old corn crib from the late 1800s, but is updated and modern, but it is a quirky, small space. Please note that the a/c unit and heat pump are portable and located next to the loft’s upstairs bed. Guests sleeping in the loft must climb narrow stairs, not suitable for the elderly. The water is from a well, and we do not recommend guests drink it. The water does have a slight sulphur smell at times, so for those that are sensitive to that smell, please be aware. The smell is not always present but is a possibility. The Internet is excellent Starlink.

Cozy Bear sits right by the large noisy, trout stocked creek, and less than five miles from Hillsville, which has a grocery store, local shops, a gym, dining, and nearby hiking. There is a shared bathhouse with a conventional toilet and an outside shower, shared with tent guests occasionally. Inside Cozy Bear, there is a queen mattress up in the loft, and a sleeper sofa downstairs. The kitchen has a sink, coffee maker and on the deck is a blackstone griddle, a propane firepit and a wood burning firepit is by the creek. Cozy Bear has a composting toilet and a shower in the bathroom, an ac window unit and a beautiful propane fireplace. If the temps get extreme outside, the waterlines do freeze. I will gladly do a full refund or change your dates if the forecast is well below freezing, although this cabin is cozy and warm inside.
