Farm stays near Prince Edward County

·
Food, wine, and sandy beaches draw visitors to Prince Edward County, a historically agricultural region sandwiched between the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario, east of Toronto. These days, the fields mostly grow grapes, and the three dozen wineries make good chardonnay, pinot gris, and pinot noir. Restaurants, inns, and craft breweries fill The County’s three main towns: Picton, Bloomfield, and Wellington. On the south shore, Sandbanks Provincial Park, one of Ontario’s top destinations for campers, is known for its sand dunes near West Lake and its long beaches along Lake Ontario. Campers and RVers can also opt for lakeside sites at nearby commercial campgrounds.

For the last 26 years we have lived here on our 6 acres of property where our Maple Sugar Bush allows us to produce our very own maple syrup every spring. [Side note: The sugar shack itself has been on the property for over 40 years.] We also raise a small but varied collection of farm animals, grow vegetables, and operate a small Market Booth that sells handmade "Canadian Themed" Home Decor goods and Maple Products at the Frontenac Farmer's Market. ( Visit us on Instagram or Facebook @Blackmaplefarm) Our Farm is located on the very edge of the Canadian Shield, so most of the landscape is a rocky, rugged, and naturally wooded. Throughout the property are numerous short, looping, walking trails that meander throughout the Sugar bush, pasture area, 3 season pond, and our farm animal "homes". These trails are perfect for short nature walks, where you'll experience natural wildflowers and plants, see and hear song birds, small animal wildlife and of course, farm life too. We are also located on the edge of the Eastern Ontario "Dark Sky" Area, which means we have a very nice view from the edge of our pasture of the North Sky stars on a clear night, with very minimal light pollution. Our varied collection of farm animals includes; lots of chickens, (including roosters who DO crow in the early morning hours), miniature goats, horses, a couple of barn cats, and a dog. During your stay with us you are welcome to come learn about and interact with our animals and daily farm life, if you so desire, and farm fresh eggs, maple syrup, local honey, and homemade baked goods, are also available to purchase too. Great for canoes, kayaks, bird and wildlife watching with spectacular star gazing. This property was part of an old homestead and as such I am still finding things so please respect the caution tape. Some finds are treasures (European Grapes, Bergamot, French Roses, Asparagus, Rhubarb, Ramps, Fiddle-heads) and others not so much. I am re purposing what I can and collecting the rest for disposal as I nurture this land back to what it was meant to be, paradise. There is an outdoor shower available as well. 7 acres of field, forest, pond, waterfall, rapids, swimming hole! There are no bad views! Sit by the pond, sit by the creek, sit in the waterfall, sit out at Blueberry Hill for a pleasant breeze or up on SunStar Ridge for some nightly star gazing or lay back in a hammock or on zero gravity chairs 1 Bunkie on a hill overlooking the pond and 2 private tent sites, one at Boot Hill and one in the Field of Dreams. Each site has a fire pit and a compostable toilet and there is a compostable toilet in an outhouse on the property for the bunkie. If you are green minded you are welcome here!

We have a basic dug privy. There are bicycles available to use to explore the island and there are 3 kayaks and 2 canoes for paddling in the sheltered channel and the lake. Fishing generally is good. Ferry toll is $10 for a return trip and the ferry from downtown Kingston to Wolfe Island is free. Linens and sleeping bags are available if requested . FALL and WINTER CAMPING at Windpsalm: Kerosene and/or wood pellets costs will be discussed prior to or upon guests arrival during the fall and winter months. The pellet stove's fan tends to be a bit noisy but it does a good job of making the tent warm and comfortable. Fen stayed in the tent in February when the overnight temperatures were -25C and the inside temperature on the back wall was 18C. Fen's grandchildren are also regular winter campers at Windpsalm. We can also provide a few sets of snowshoes and if requested a popup ice fishing hut. In the event that the snow is too deep for your vehicle, we will transport our guests to the tent in our farm John Deere Gator.

Beautiful 40 acres of farm fields and another 110 acres of forested land, on a privately owned spring fed lake. 3 minute beautiful walk to the water. Abundance of trails for walking and hiking, which lead you through the property and along the lake shore. Many outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, or catch and release fishing, of some of the cleanest fish around. Kayak rental available. Although the shoreline is not swimmable you can swim in the middle of the lake. Take in a campfire by your trailer or down by the lake shore, while enjoying s'mores or sipping on local wine, and watching fish jump. Wake up to the call of a Loon and possibly seeing deer in the field. This is not just a place to camp, but a place to make memories. Located 45 mins from the Sandbanks, and central to provincially awarded wines and tarts. Visit local farmers markets and dairies for fresh curd. This is our small parcel of paradise and we welcome you to share it with us.

Farm stays near Prince Edward County guide

When to go

While the busiest season in Prince Edward County is June through early September, both spring and fall can bring pleasant weather and fewer crowds. The campgrounds at Sandbanks Provincial Park are open from late April into October, and book up months in advance for weekend getaways in summer. Come mid-week if your schedule allows. During the cold winter months, from January to March, many businesses around The County close entirely or significantly reduce their hours.

Know before you go

  • Book your trip to Prince Edward County in advance, particularly if you plan to camp at Sandbanks Provincial Park or if you’re visiting on a summer weekend. Campers can reserve sites at Sandbanks up to five months before your trip, and campsites are often booked as soon as they become available.
  • Picton, the largest town in The County, is your best choice for groceries and other supplies, but you’ll find small local markets, farm stands, cheese makers, and orchards throughout the region.
  • Looking for a less-crowded day-use beach? If the Sandbanks beaches are too busy, try the smaller North Beach Provincial Park. You can also find beaches for swimming and fishing around the large East Lake.
