A little research before hand on the National Forest Website or a quick call to the ranger’s station at (805) 968-6640 can save a lot of headache and confusion. So too will you be saved from unwanted surprise by checking out alerts regarding the forest’s campground and road closures. Large trailers and RV’s can be difficult to maneuver in certain areas of the forest under difficult conditions, so be sure and do a little navigational research by consulting a map to make sure you know where you will be driving and if it will be manageable with your vehicle. No idea where the main photo on this page was taken, but certainly not at Nettle Springs CG, which is usually bone dry except for a small trickle in the sand wash.

In addition to depressing sights/sites such as this, the hillsides, which are off-limits to off-road vehicles, are covered with dirt bike and other tracks. Looks like a lot of weekend hell-raising gets done here, so camp at your own risk!Condition of the bathroom at Nettle Springs CG as of 5/2/15. Los Padres NF website says that the CG is open, but there are no alerts or warnings about its unusable, unsafe condition. Called Mt. Pinos Ranger District, they said it is being decommissioned.Lots of shotgun shells, bullet casings and broken skeet-shooting targets are scattered all over Nettle Springs CG. This photo was taken on 5/2/15.My wife and I went to Nettle Springs CG on 5/2/15 and were disappointed to find that it looks like a war zone. The campsites are littered with trash, the facilities have been destroyed, and there are shotgun shells everywhere.

As of 5/2/15, the CG was all but destroyed by hell raisers. Bathroom is a pile of splinters, campsite facilities are destroyed, and it is littered with shotgun shells and trash. Los Padres NF says it is a law enforcement problem. Camp at your own risk!
