Welcome to one of northern Nevada's best-kept secrets. Willow Retreat is located just 16 miles south of the Idaho border in the quiet historic town of Mountain City, surrounded by thousands of acres of BLM land and the nearby Duck Valley Reservation. If you're looking to unplug, enjoy the outdoors, and experience true peace and quiet, you've found it.
The property sits directly on the beautiful Owyhee River with nearly two acres of river frontage. Because this is open range country, a barbed-wire fence helps keep cattle off the property. If you choose to cross the fence to fish along the riverbank, please do so at your own risk and leave the fence exactly as you found it.
Fishing here can be excellent! Rainbow trout are commonly caught right from the property, and nearby reservoirs offer even more opportunities for anglers. Bring your favorite bait—worms are always a great choice, and the locals even swear by bacon!
Hunters love this area because it provides easy access to public land in both Nevada and Idaho. Depending on the season, you'll find opportunities for deer, elk, antelope, ducks, upland birds, and more. The surrounding roads and trails also make this a popular destination for ATV riders, off-road enthusiasts, photographers, bird watchers, and anyone who enjoys exploring wide-open country.
Mountain City itself has a fascinating history. Once a thriving mining community during Nevada's copper and silver boom, many of the original buildings and mining remnants can still be seen today. Exploring the old town, abandoned structures, and nearby mining areas offers a unique glimpse into Nevada's past while providing endless opportunities for hiking and photography.
One of the unique features of our property is the historic jail building located on-site. We're currently restoring this piece of local history and hope to offer it as a unique Airbnb stay in the future. Stay tuned!
The campsite offers plenty of level ground for multiple RVs or campers, making it perfect for families or groups traveling together. For your convenience, we provide an electrical outlet, Wi-Fi, and a picnic table. While you'll have internet access at the campsite, cell service and Wi-Fi become very limited once you leave the immediate area, so plan accordingly.
Just next door is the local bar, a favorite gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Don't let the simple exterior fool you—inside you'll find friendly people, cold drinks, and great food during the warmer months. If Rex is cooking, be sure to try the famous Rex Burger!
Need groceries, fuel, or supplies? The Duck Valley Reservation, about 15 minutes north, has a grocery store, Ace Hardware, gas station, and health clinic. Elko is approximately 90 minutes away, while Boise is about a 2½-hour drive.
Nearby fishing destinations include Wild Horse Reservoir, Sheep Creek Reservoir, Dry Creek Reservoir, Manning Reservoir, and many other hidden gems throughout the area.

First of all - the hosts/owners are the BEST people!!! The area is stunning, and if you are into night sky photography or any sort of geology, this place is for you! The spots are big and we fit our trailer with ease! The sunrise was stunning, so wake early and enjoy it with some coffee! We are already planning a trip back for some more exploring!

Nice spot, quiet, was nice to have power. Make sure to confirm the WiFi details. We couldn’t connect, which is normally not a big deal, but I missed the part of the instructions on how to access the river and couldn’t log onto the app to confirm. No cell service at spot. I wound definitely recommend though. Cristina was very responsive and helpful.

If you’re not comfortable with a long gravel road that changes over time, this might not be the journey for you. At times it was a bit bumpy a the road changes from smooth to washboard, but patient driving (and airing down a few psi) can help smooth it out.
Once you arrive Jay is there to greet you. His chill vibe speaks volumes for what he’s building out there. It’s truly a beautiful space the likes of which I’ve never encountered before. We had ideal weather, a bit warm when we arrived with a light wind, cooling down nicely overnight. Endless stars and zero lights made for an epic setting.
At a minimum you’ll get dusty but if you’re not getting a little dirty are you really camping?

It was our own private oasis in the expansive desert. Christine has great communication and made sure we had everything we needed. We are already planning our next trip. Highly recommend. 10/10

Jay's place is really nice with a beautiful view of the Ruby mountains away to the east. It very secluded and quiet, and a dark skies area, so the stars are amazing! Jay is a really warm and friendly host. The road in to the property is a bit washboarded and rough in places, but we had no issue getting in with our two wheel drive Sprinter van camper.
An added bonus is the large population of Western Meadowlarks that serenade you all day, but especially in the mornings. It's lovely to see the morning sun across the desert and listening to the birdsong while enjoying your coffee.

Located just off the mostly quiet main road along the owyhee river is a wonderful spot to disconnect and enjoy nature.
There is power hookups and a water spigot, as well as WiFi next to the old jail building. Up closer to the jail building is a good sized picnic table as well as a bench.
Down close to the river is a large fire ring for campfires. Bring a long extension cord or generator if you want to be even closer to the river and fire pit. The fishing is GREAT! I caught my personal record trout! I would come back for that alone.
The stars at night were amazing, as were the sunsets across the hills. We stayed on the land for 3 days and 2 night. I would highly recommend this spot and would stay here again.

Overview
About
Located in northeastern Nevada, Wild Horse State Recreation Area is a remote park located at the northeast shore of the 2,800-acre Wild Horse Reservoir, which offers two swim beaches and a boat ramp. Well stocked with different species, including trout, bass, perch, and catfish, fishing (including ice fishing in the winter) is one of the top draws here. The park is also known for its wildflower displays, wildlife, and plentiful winter recreation. The park offers plentiful wildlife and excellent stargazing at night. One campground offers 34 sites across two loops, with picnic table, shade, fire pit, and a camp pad. Three cabins are also available.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for water access: The sites on the south loop of the campground offer the closest access to the reservoir.
- Best for large RVs: Several spacious back-in sites and pull-through sites can accommodate large RVs.
- Best for comfort: Three cabins, include one ADA-accessible cabin, are available year-round and offer beds, restrooms, heat and air conditioning, mini-fridge, microwave, and electricity
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Arrive early in the day, especially during peak periods, since all campsites are first-come first-served.
- If your travel plans are flexible, try visiting during the week and during off-peak and non-holiday times.
- The cabins in the park can be reserved up to six months in advance.
When to go
The park is open year-round and offers recreational opportunities in all seasons. Visit in the late spring to see a dazzling display of wildflowers. Summers are a popular time to visit for swimming, boating, and hiking. Fishing is best in the spring and fall. In the winter, the reservoir ices over, offering ice fishing and ice skating, while the rest of the park can be explored on skis, sleds, and snowmobiles. The campground, restrooms, and showers are open year-round.
Know before you go
- Bring everything you need with you, as the park offers very limited amenities. The closest town is Mountain City, 20 miles away, while the nearest gas station is 35 miles away at Owyhee.
- Drive only on established roads and park in designated areas. OHVs must stay on established roads.
- Hunting is not permitted inside the park.
- Pets are welcome but must be kept on leash.
