Enjoy the country life in Kau on the South End of the Big Island and the lovely red Lehua flowers blooming. We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there. You don’t need a 4WD to get to our place, but you will need a SUV or truck. Go slow the road is bumpy and rough in places. We are 1.2 miles from the highway. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires! It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious! This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and Tmobile work also The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! The back 15 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve. We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided.

NOTE: There is a 4 wheel 1/3 mile driveway to the campsite, so a Jeep or other four-wheel-drive vehicle is necessary to drive to the rental. All wheel drive (AWD) isn’t 4 wheel drive and won’t work! If you don’t have a 4x4 vehicle: You can park in our parking lot at the top of the driveway and: (A) we can leave a Nissan Frontier for you to drive to the rental and back to your car if you are comfortable driving a 4 wheel drive road. Or (B) we can happily pick you up at the top and drive you up and down! Your choice! Just let us know when you reserve which you would like to do We have a 24-foot Class C RV, Ohana, surrounded by coconut palms and offering a 180-degree, million-dollar view! Enjoy the peace and quiet along with refreshing ocean breezes. The RV sleeps up to 4 guests, with a queen-size cab-over bed and a full-size bed. It includes a kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet and shower. There’s a large covered lanai for watching the sunsets each evening, as well as a fire pit for campfires. The family who own and operate Southern Comfort fell in love with the property while visiting friends and family over 25 years ago. They knew they would eventually want to retire here from the mainland one day. Fast forward to 2021 and they started their developments. After building their dream home, they knew they wanted to share the beauty to extended family and friends so they created their first site "Papaya Patch", converting their storage container into a private comfy stay and then built their 2nd site “Valley View Bungalow”. Both sites offer a queen bed and their own bathroom and outdoor shower access . Ocean views from the Papaya Patch and Valley Views from the bungalow. Sunrise Horizon is within 1 hour from Kīlauea Volcanoes National Park, approximately 10 minutes to volcano Park Kahuku Unit, 9 miles to South Point, 10 minutes to Naalehu town, and the perfect mid-point between Kona and Hilo. Plenty of beaches and hiking close by! I’m almost always available to offer some friendly tips and advice for your next adventure!

Recent lava flows have created unsurveyed lava tubes, and it’s not unusual to spot a cloud of Hawaiian hoary bat. Please come prepared to supply your own drinking water.
